Great networking event tonight!

By Joy A. Kennelly

Watched Lipstick Jungle tonight after my mixer and like it a lot better than the Cashmere Mafia. We'll see... Much cuter men on Lipstick Jungle - especially the young hottie who seduces that married woman. Not saying I approve of that aspect, just like his look. Hot, hot, hot!

Love the fact the channel 4 news covered "the Cougar connection" --too funny! Tonight was a lot of fun with all my Cougar girlfriends - although we're not into younger men so much, we do enjoy the eye candy. Hey, we're not blind people. However, totally cracks me up that the term Cougar has become mainstream. Growlll! Why should older guys have all the fun with younger women? Right? Turn-about is fair play in my mind.

We had a great turn-out tonight! Once I figure out how to upload pix from this camera, I'll share them with you! Kim was so sweet and came early to help set up. You always love people like her who are such servant-hearted. I think she's my new best friend. LOL We all agree she looks like a younger, beautiful Maria Shriver. Go Kim go!

Actress Maria Rangel was in all her glory sharing her experiences on NBC's hit show, Age of Love, with a rapt group of women. We all agreed the "tennis guy" was cute, but dull. I guess if all you do is play sports and nothing else...

In addition to the wonderful Yummy soy candles she was selling, Maria literally gave this woman the dress off her back from her new line of Yummy designs to try on. I was laughing so hard I think I forgot to take pix, but imagine one woman modeling this extremely sexy long dress with lots of boobage surrounded by her lovely long blonde hair and then imagine the other lovely brunette woman (Maria) wrapped in nothing other than a spa wrap towel cheering her on! Too funny and so Maria.

The Gochi drink was a huge hit too because after all, Oprah endorses it! And Oprah is god-like right? Also, Dr. Oz, Time Magazine and so many more call it a Super Food! Gotta try it! Trust me. You'll be so amazed at how good you feel! It has changed my life by controlling my hormones which I am so happy about. Believe me, so are others!

Chef Melinda booked her first wedding cake order and cupcake delivery order tonight. Go Chef Melinda!
Her new company name is Sugar Cups - isn't that adorable? "Get your cake and eat it too!" You don't want to know the back story to that tagline...:)

We took the funniest pictures (which won't be included in the official company pix for obvious reasons - sex sells, but that's not what we're selling - only cupcakes people!) I wish I had another one right now. Perfect gifts for Valentine's Day if anyone needs a nice company present for anyone. Hint, hint.:)

What was interesting to me is that on my vision board I had cut out a picture of a wedding with cupcakes as the wedding "cake" and it gave me chills when I realized now I know a baker who bakes cupcakes! She hadn't decided on cupcakes as her main focus for her new business when I created my vision board. Too freaky. Maybe this is my year for love? I hope so...

Spa Riviera Owner, Tony, was a hit with the ladies and men because everyone wants to look years younger with his amazing microdermabrasion treatments. I especially enjoyed his new massage therapist, Martha's gifted hands as she released some of my tension during a chair massage. Can't wait for a real massage, I need one after today. OY!

Lou-e-Luey's outdid themselves too. Rafael's shrimp ceviche is absolutely divine, as was everything else, and everyone was asking for cards all night long. I had no idea they were such a great Baja seafood place. I really must visit soon. Really wonderful. Highly recommend it! Fun vibe in the restaurant and delicious food.

My new artist, Beverly Bigwood, showcased her artwork and her kissing cupids were a big hit. So glad we're working together. She has a real unique style and is such a beautiful woman (inside and out.) She deserves all the best. Now to help her achieve it.

Otherwise, life is moving ahead at warp speed. I'm very excited to see what will happen now that we've launched the first South Bay Professional Connection - onwards and upwards!

God bless everyone! God loves you and so do I!

I've decided I need to become the white Oprah...

By Joy A. Kennelly

I just did a vision board with some friends tonight and I put money on it in the 100's of millions (my guy bud kept saying dream big - ok, so I did!) As I was driving home I was thinking, now how can I make that kind of money?

Then I thought of it. Become the white Oprah! Isn't she worth money like that? No offense Oprah, but I've always admired your business acumen and the way you handle your show. I have always said you're one of my role models and who I want to most be like.

Well, maybe this will happen after all! My friends have been teasing me that it's time for me to get out behind my blogs and have my own show since I have so many opinions and know so many cool people.

I can see it now. The Pure, Unadulterated Joy Show. Doesn't it have a nice ring to it?

What's so ironic is that once she said it I thought, maybe she's right. Maybe I should go get my own cable talk show. I love watching Ellen. Jimmy Kimmel was very funny last night. (Did anyone else think Bobby Brown was totally a riot? Especially in his jeans! MAN! No wonder black men don't wear tight pants. JUST KIDDING!) Letterman with Paris was funny too.

I think I could put together a similar show format (incorporating some of my favorite bands from myspace) that would be rockin' and have a message too.

So, I'm at lunch with my friend Kirsten today and she mentions that a friend of hers has just been given a cable station that she needs to fill with programming. Hey! I'm all over it! I'm telling you. Put something out there and who knows where it will lead?

We'll see. I have no idea. But what was cool is that my friend Rick used to have his own sports show years ago and he's totally into the idea of doing it again for her too. I'll have to tell him that his wife Shana is my Gayle though so no having her on his show. She's my best friend in this one.:)

The possibilities are endless! I love how Jimmy Kimmel has that deadpan Mexican guy doing all kinds of funny stuff. Also, how David Letterman incorporates his Asian guy into skits that are so silly they work. What nationality shall I go with? African American? Eastern Indian? Hawaiian? Polynesian? I don't see anyone having fun with someone of color like that yet. Do you?

Now please know, I am totally joking around. Don't be offended. I'm just pointing out an obvious marketing tool (making fun of minorities with love) that has apparently worked on two major talk shows so why shouldn't I copy it? I'm sure Conan and Ferguson have their targets too, but I'm usually too tired to stay up to watch them. Plus, I don't find their sense of humor that funny. I just don't. Sorry guys. I know tons of others do though so who cares what I think.

So back to my side kick. At first I was thinking a hot surfer dude like that guy on TMZ (can you believe people are still Googling that guy? He's cute, but he's not that hot people! I guess compared to everyone else on their staff....)

So back to my show concept. Then I thought, what about my 'ole Rapper bud with the large pink and white mink stovetop hat as my foil for stupid minority skits? He's a character and he could prove pretty funny in the right situations. We'll see. I could spin him off to be my next Dr. Phil if he gets popular enough. Just have to make sure he realizes the jokes on him before we start or it could get messy.

Who will be my Dr. Oz? I'll figure it out. This could be a lot of fun. What about that foot doctor that everyone loves to party with down here in MB? I forget his name, but you know the man-child I'm talking about right? Oh wait, he's too old to be a man-child right? Man-boy? What do you call someone with stunted adolescent tendencies?

I'm so confused! I'm sure the latest sexy 20 year old he's been hitting on will be able to tell me what to call him. Thanks 20 year old. I know, he's old enough to be your father, but he's got money so what the hey right? How about baby daddy? Kind of has a ring to it...

Ooooh, I'm rolling tonight. Good thing I'm going to church in approximately 6 hours. I need some chuchin'. I'm even singing if you can believe it. I'm looking forward to it, but 6am is vewy, vewy early. I've had such a great weekend starting on Friday.

I've decided I'm going to have to get out of the Hermosa Beach fishbowl at least once a week to keep my sanity and my sense of humor about living here.

What always cracks me up about the people who read this blog is how angry they become. If it makes you angry, stop reading it. Right? Right. Read something else. There's got to be something sick in you to continue reading something that irritates you. Oh well, not my problem. Thanks for being loyal. HA!

Better go check my laundry. Hopefully it's finally dry. I had such a fun time visioning with Rick and Shana tonight I kept forgetting to check it while I was there and now...

I'm going to be looking tired tomorrow! Hope your favorite team wins in the Super Bowl. I'm voting for the commercials and the half-time show. Wonder what mysteries await us there?

Sleep well.

Britney Spears... So sad... and other musings

By Joy A. Kennelly

(WHOOPS! I forgot to take this out of draft format! Here's yesterday's blog for your reading pleasure.)

I know, I know. Enough of the Britney saga, but I just feel so sorry for her. I used to have a friend who was bipolar and there really is no reasoning with someone like that unless they go on meds. It's just a difficult disease that is out-of-control unless people want to get help.

I pray Britney realizes she can't continue like this and seeks help. My friend and I stopped being friends because of her erratic behavior and angry outbursts. I've seen her since the time of our final blow-up and apparently  she's on meds which have been helping. I'm happy for her because she was spinning with no direction just like Britney. It's just a sad, sad, sad disease. I wish both of them much love and support.

BTW, wasn't that a riot about Sean Young getting so drunk she interrupted the DGA Awards? Sad and rude for Julian, but funny nonetheless. I bet a lot of people would want to say that to certain people throughout awards show season, but it was rude. Bad Sean, Bad...

However, I think that's the first time the DGA Awards show has ever actually hit the entertainment news. Maybe they'll look back and think it was a good thing too. Their five minutes of fame.

Now that Sean is in rehab, maybe she'll think so too?!:) I wish her much success in getting her life under control.

So glad to hear the Writer's Guild strike might be coming to an end sooner than later. It's about time! I've been forced to explore other options on my cable and it's just not as fun. HBO is interesting, but sometimes you want mindless viewing, not thought provoking or provocative. Does that make sense? Plus, I like commercials. Weird, I know, but I always have and always will. I like the mental break.

Here's a fun site to explore if you're not sure who to vote for, or want to see if who you're supporting shares similar views to you in all areas: http://www.vajoe.com/candidate_calculator.html I was kind of surprised to see who I came up with.

I was pretty even Republican/Democrat candidates which was nice to see because I've always said I'm a moderate because I see the value in both parties. I always wish there was a third party that combined the best of both. Don't you?

Oh, and here's a fun Christian Super Bowl Party if you're looking to meet other singles who share similar beliefs:

It's time again to celebrate the Super Bowl!

Come join the masses as we eat, drink, socialize and perhaps even watch the game (upstairs with Bill Dunn). It has been rumored that Patrick Hare will be creating and serving his famous New England Clam Chowder--you'll want to attend for that reason only.

Now even my mom is chiming in! LOL

By Joy A. Kennelly

Just have to share because this makes me laugh even more! My mom just read all my blog and also the This is Hermosa site. For the most part she was very impressed with the headway we're making, but she wanted me to stop calling people stupid. Now I know she's reading it too - OY! I better really watch myself now! LOL

Okay, I'm hearing it from my pastor on Sunday mornings, from the Bible, and now my Mom. I will do my best to be more respectful to those in leadership, but I can't promise anything. It really is absolutely ridiculous to me. How blind are the people involved in the Downtown Hermosa Beach issue to the facts and how they come across? I just don't get it.

On another note, the LA Art Show last night was simply wonderful. I'm going to give it a proper review later, but really must get some work done. Amazing, amazing art; wonderful food and drinks; sophisticated, elegant crowd; and my favorite actor, Owen Wilson, wandering around. What more could a girl ask for?

I so wanted to go up to him and ask if the art here beat A Night at the Museum (which, if you haven't seen, it's absolutely hilarious - even for adults. I saw it twice. "I won't quit you!" Totally fun romp.), but I refrained. Although it was difficult since I kept seeing him. Often alone too.

If you know him, tell him I said hi and wish him much love. JUST KIDDING. Like he would even care. I did want to ask if he read my "Ode to Owen Wilson" blog post on his attempted suicide though, but I highly, highly, highly doubt it. But then again, you never know! (If you click on that link, scroll to the bottom.)

Okay, now I really must get to creating. Take care.

Check out www.thejoywriterpr.wordpress.com later on for the entire art show review ok? Thanks!

Here's the "card" my agent Aur-Aelion Israel sent out - too funny!

From my commercial agent, Aur-Aelion Israel - one of the best guys in the biz who runs Almond Talent. (I don't know if he wrote it or not.) I just thought in light of all the hyper-sensitivity around this time of year you all might enjoy the laugh.

I wish the same to all of you reading today!

It's best read out loud:

To My Liberal Friends:

Please accept with no obligation, implied or implicit, my best wishes for an environmentally conscious, socially responsible, low-stress, non-addictive, gender-neutral celebration of the winter solstice holiday, practiced within the most enjoyable traditions of the religious persuasion of your choice, or secular practices of your choice, with respect for the religious/secular persuasion and/or traditions of others, or their choice not to practice religious or secular traditions at all. I also wish you a fiscally successful, personally fulfilling and medically uncomplicated recognition of the onset of the generally accepted calendar year 2008, but not without due respect for the calendars of choice of other cultures whose contributions to society have helped make America great. Not to imply that America is necessarily greater than any other country nor the only America in the Western Hemisphere . Also, this wish is made without regard to the race, creed, color, age, physical ability, religious faith or sexual preference of the wishes.

To My Conservative Friends:

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

This is a great article on PR in the Wall Street Journal today - very funny

Are Your Clients
Happy Now,
Mr. Brabender?

This Persistent PR Man
Is Offbeat Yet Practical,
Just Like the Fish 'n Flush
By BARRY NEWMAN
December 19, 2007; Page A1

LAWRENCE, Kan. -- Hi, there. Hope you are well. We thought you'd like some information for an interesting feature. It's about a Kansas public-relations professional who has carved a unique niche for himself by sending the nation's media outlets thousands of copies of news releases for "practical yet peculiar" consumer products.

[Todd Brabender]

He's Todd Brabender -- whose clients include the SummerSled (it works on grass) and Litecubes (the glowing ice cubes). His latest PR pitch, for the Fish 'n Flush toilet fish tank, begins: "It's a unique new product whose decorative appeal could turn the bathroom into the most talked about room in the house."

Mr. Brabender, who is 41 years old and a former media person himself, is the kind of PR guy journalists hate to love -- but love nevertheless. An old-fashioned press agent with newfangled powers, he blasts emails far and wide from the basement of his flagstoned mid-American home. Media elites may fume over coverups and spin, but for reporters with holiday news holes to fill, a bulletin about guppies in the toilet is cause for elation.

As Lisa Reicosky wrote in the Canton, Ohio, Repository: "Sometimes in this business we receive press releases we just can't ignore." That was the first sentence of her story on the Fish 'n Flush. "The toilet fish, yeah, that caught my eye," says Ms. Reicosky. "I'm part time. I need the PR people to give me my ideas." The Repository (circulation 65,000) gave the Fish 'n Flush 241 words.

SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS

At least 500 newspapers, magazines, television and radio stations -- online and off -- have taken this bait in a year, says Mr. Brabender. He figures it would have cost the makers of the Fish 'n Flush a million dollars to buy that kind of advertising. As it is, except for Mr. Brabender's $2,500-a-month fee, they haven't spent a penny.

"It's all Todd, generating PR for us," says David Parrish of AquaOne Technologies Inc., in Orange County, Calif. AquaOne designs leak-control hardware and uses a clear-plastic showroom toilet tank to display it. "We were standing around one day," Mr. Parrish recalls, "and I said, 'Wouldn't it be fun if we had fish in it and you flushed it and the fish didn't go down?'"

Thus the Fish 'n Flush came to be. A Web site went up with a mail-order price of $299. Somebody who knew somebody put AquaOne in touch with Mr. Brabender. His release went out and orders came in. With no advertising and a "how did you hear about us" box on the site, AquaOne could draw a straight line from media plugs to sales.

"We see the geographic pattern," says Mr. Parrish. "If we get orders from Bangor, we know Todd's done something in Bangor." Sales have reached 1,000. Now Mr. Brabender has launched a second Fish 'n Flush campaign. The vehicle isn't a new story, just new reporters.

ON THE FISH N FLUSH

[The Fish n Flush]

Below, full text of Mr. Brabender's press release on the Fish n Flush.
%FIRSTNAME%,
Here's some information for an interesting consumer feature. The release below details a creative product called the Fish n Flush that is proving to be popular in homes nationally. Perhaps you could use this as a feature highlighting off-the-wall type products that are designed to create buzz and unique consumer interest.
We would be happy to arrange an interview, provide supportives or help in any other way further. If there is someone better to send this to can you please forward this to him/her or provide me with the contact information? Thanks and look forward to hearing from you soon.

Fish n Flush Aquarium Toilet Tank Brings Decorative Twist To
Bathrooms.
www.fishnflush.com
(Westminster, California) -- It's a unique new product whose decorative appeal could turn the bathroom into the most talked about room in the house. The Fish n Flush is clear two-piece toilet tank that replaces a standard toilet tank and cleverly contains a fully functioning aquarium inside. The Fish-n-Flush's insert can be filled with water for fish or left dry for use as a terrarium for a pet reptile or to house colorful plants or foliage.
"We wanted to develop a product that had a dual purpose -- to serve as a proper, fully functional toilet and also as a source of entertainment and conversation," says Richard Quintana, CEO of AquaOne. "Fish-n-Flush is definitely an attention-getter."
Introduced by AquaOne Technologies, Inc., the patented Fish-n-Flush aquarium toilet tank fits most toilets and operates as a conventional interior tank, which is manufactured of clear PETG to ensure a strong and durable reservoir. The aquarium will accept fresh water, as well as salt, warm and tropical water. In addition, the 2.2-gallon aquarium piece can be easily removed for cleaning without obstructing the toilet from working. The toilet tank itself holds 2.5 gallons which offers sufficient head pressure to flush properly.
AquaOne worked with a marine biologist to develop the technology and produce a certified working aquarium. Fish-n-Flush comes with gravel, two plastic nine-inch plants, a dual filter system, LED lighting, a built-in feeder, fill valve, overflow tube, flapper, suction pump and two screws. The power level is set at a safe 12 volts.
"One of the key attractions to Fish-n-Flush is that we see the toilet serving as a great way to help toilet train young children," Quintana adds, "as well as a fun fashion statement for the homeowner who wants to have something unique."
The Fish-n-Flush sells for $299 and is available at: www.fishnflush.com

"There's such turnover in the media," he said one workday morning, "we'll hit people who missed it last time." Clean-cut and clear-eyed, he sat at his computer fielding Fish 'n Flush queries: the DIY Network, Exceptional Parent Magazine, the Muncie Star Press. Said Mr. Brabender, "We're out on the dance floor one more time."

It's a crowded one. The Bureau of Labor Statistics counts roughly 100,000 Americans in journalism but 235,000 in public relations, most of them in big organizations. But technology has not only given rise to mobs of small shops between the coasts, it has also turned the humdrum news release into a reviled variant of spam.

For reporters offered a chance to disseminate "relationship advice" from a porn star-rocker power couple, or to cover "the top 10 reasons label printers make great gifts," the delete button is never far away. To survive the cull, a pitchman needs a gimmick.

Mr. Brabender's: "funny yet functional," a newsroom natural. That's why CNBC's "The Big Idea With Donny Deutsch" wanted Michael Daoud on the show. Mr. Daoud invented the Xshot -- a stick you screw onto a camera to take pictures of yourself -- and on the day of the New York taping, he got on the phone to Mr. Brabender for a pep talk.

"Don't sound like a circus hawker," Mr. Brabender told him.

"Right, right," said Mr. Daoud.

"Keep an eye on Donny," Mr. Brabender said. "If he glazes over, wrap it up. Don't spew. Be a well, not a fountain."

"A well, not a fountain," said Mr. Daoud. "Great advice, Todd."

After hanging up, Mr. Brabender said, "My goal is make it easy for the media. Media people like easy stories. I know. I'm a former media guy myself."

From 1988 to 1994, Mr. Brabender worked at 6News, a Lawrence TV channel with two daily newscasts and long stationary shots of traffic on a Kansas River bridge. He grew up in Rock Falls, Ill., where his father was a salesman for Senco nail-guns. ("It's a great nail-gun," says Mr. Brabender.) His "blood boiling" to be a newsman, he came here to the University of Kansas, got a journalism degree and then went straight onto the crime beat at 6News.

"Bike thefts were up one year," he says, but when his wife got a job at more pay for half the hours, he quit to stay home with their two kids, and signed on with a service that monitors mentions of corporate names on TV. "I saw stories about new products," Mr. Brabender says. "I thought it would be neat to be a person who got the media interested in stories like that."

He says he had thought most successful PR types lived in New York or Los Angeles, but in 1996 a friend of his, Cathy Hamilton, dreamed up a gag gift -- Boyfriend in a Box -- a set of sham snapshots and love notes to help women fend off advances. She asked Mr. Brabender to publicize it. He did. The gag went over big, and the next thing he knew, Mr. Brabender was founding Spread the News PR, his own firm.

To start, his research tools were a yellow pad and a chair at the public library. Now, for $850 a year, he logs on to ProfNet, where reporters looking for sources tell PR people what they're up to. For $3,500, he gets MediaSource, a list of reporters that he uses to make sure his release for SingingCoach learn-to-sing software, for instance, doesn't go to somebody who covers national security.

Mr. Brabender doesn't want to be a pest. He doesn't send out samples, except on request (and hardly ever sees, much less uses, any of the products himself). And he tries never to send a release to one reporter more than three or four times.

He doesn't pitch himself, either. Weird clients just attract weirder ones, enough this year to pull in fees of $300,000. Not that the play Mr. Brabender gets them is totally ecstatic. In November, Esquire magazine consigned the Cone-i-Vore pinecone picker-upper to its "things we won't be covering this month" column. On the other hand, Lena Fiore can barely believe what he did for Toilet Tattoos.

"People say PR is a frill, but it's such a necessity," says Ms. Fiore, who is 43 and lives in Macedonia, Ohio. The Toilet Tattoo, a decorative toilet-seat appliqué, was her invention. "I have a white commode," she says, "and I wanted to cover it without using a germ-harboring rug." She has them manufactured in Minnesota.

A friend led Ms. Fiore to Mr. Brabender. "There was a sincerity about him," she says. He blasted out his release in September, announcing "a unique new bathroom decoration." By his count, the news has filled 1,229 inches of space in 131 newspapers, including six inches in the Oconomowoc Enterprise of Oconomowoc, Wis.

"People are skeptical of advertising," says Ms. Fiore, who doesn't do any. By itself, she says, Mr. Brabender's release has brought half a million Toilet Tattoo sales to her Web site, at $9.95 apiece. "I don't know what it is about newspapers," says Ms. Fiore. "When people read about something, maybe it's more real to them. They seem to believe it whether it's true or not."

Wasn't going to blog, but... Tonight was too cool

By Joy A. Kennelly

Julian Myer's Entertainment Public Relations class at UCLA just keeps getting better and better. Where else can you go and meet 3-4 top-level executives (Presidents!) doing work that inspires you, or leads you to greater opportunities? I love too that I can ask all the questions I want and they love answering them!

Not to say I've networked with any (yet), but just the idea that all the Presidents and SR. VP's and others are willing to come out on a Tuesday night after work and speak to us is very cool. Especially when class runs till 10pm!

I think many of the speakers come simply because they love and admire Julian. I think some also come because they took his class so long ago and want to give back to those rising up behind them. I really admire everyone, ok, maybe almost everyone who took the time to come out.

(A particular blowhard I know professionally who came last week was really annoying, but I jumped out of the class and missed hearing and seeing him fortunately. What's sad is how many people he gets to intern with him. You'd think people would notice he's constantly looking for help which isn't a good sign, but new people to the business can be naive.)

I really, really admire Julian who just completed a marathon in Las Vegas in 16 hours - he is 90 or pushing 90. How impressive. What I love about him is he absolutely loves what he does, loves the people he brings in, and really wants us all to succeed. I love the way he introduces people and thanks them for speaking because it's obvious he holds them in the highest respect which in turn brings it back to him because he's such a gem. He is giving back to so many of us in so many ways.

I am truly inspired every time I come to class to see the caliber of people he has booked for the evening. He has more stamina than a lot of us too. We start promptly at 7pm and run straight through to 10pm with no breaks. I've just started asking for speakers cards as they're packing up because there isn't any time otherwise to do so.

I really must go to sleep, but let's just say tonight was extremely interesting and totally the people I wanted to meet! If I have time I'm going to write a big blog wrap up of the wonderful speakers we've been having to date.

Thanks Julian. You're an inspiration to us all. I wish you many more years of bringing together aspiring and mid-career publicist and veteran experts in the industry. You're one of a kind! And I mean that in the best way possible.

God bless you one and all. Sleep well.

Amazing what a good night's sleep does for perspective

By Joy A. Kennelly

Rather than fight this battle I'm just going to resign the account. Not worth the headache. I don't need to stoop to their level and there's better business opportunities right around the corner. Monday in fact.

Time to work with people I enjoy working with and who respect my abilities. No time for others.

Feels good to have made this decision. I've ended such business relationships in the past and always felt so much better afterwards. No amount of money is worth being disrespected. I guess I'm learning faster and faster!:)

SO! That's all on that. Onwards and upwards to bigger and better opportunities.

Peace out.

Julian Myers' Entertainment PR class, Hasbro and Boundless Playgrounds

By Joy A. Kennelly

It's always interesting to find out who actually reads my blog. They may not realize I know, but I can tell. So that's why it's fun to gear blogs towards subjects I know will cause a reaction because that's why people blog right? What fun is it if no one reads what you have to say?

Plus, I think I do interesting activities and meet interesting people that are beyond their norm and that makes it fun too, to expose people to new thoughts, activities and philosophies. We don't all think alike which is why we're all unique and special. Aint that special?

That said, last night was another of my entertainment publicity classes with my 90-year old PR teacher, Julian Myers, who says: "Just find something to achieve that will take you till you're a hundred--hopefully something of social or civic value --and, ordinarily, your health will be there for you to attain it. And if you jog slowly for three miles outdoors each morning, as I like to, you'll feel better all along the way."

This from a man who runs in marathons and all kinds of competitions against people his age and younger. He wears coke bottle glasses, has a hearing aid that he had to turn up so loud last night to hear the speakers that it was whistling, and he shuffles a little when he walks, but he's still as sharp as a tack and the warmest, smartest, most well-respected man in Hollywood.

Almost every speaker who has come through this class to share their wisdom has nothing but good things to say about him, and/or professes to taking his class 10, 20 years prior! What a legacy he has created. Just last night we heard the President Domestic Marketing, Warner Bros., Dawn McElwaine Taubin, speak and she had taken his class!

I think last night was my favorite group of speakers to date which is why I feel compelled to blog about it. I love hearing powerful women in Hollywood share their knowledge. Especially women as accomplished as Julian always manages to bring in.

I know a lot of the other speakers from other nights because I've been involved in the Entertainment Professional Publicist Society, EPPS, for a long time and have networked at various functions with numerous people over the years. It's the organization to join if you are interested in connecting with a large spectrum of the entertainment industry from a publicity standpoint.

I've also worked at almost all the studios over the course of my career as a temp when I was first starting out and know people through that experience too. The other night, Producer, A.C. Lyles, one of the oldest living Republicans and the Ambassador of Good Will for Paramount Pictures came to speak.

He actually remembered me from the lot which totally surprised me. First, because it had been so long ago that I worked there, and second, because he meets thousands of people every year. I was flattered to say the least. He's quite the charmer.

That evening was cute since both he and Julian are both in their 90's it was like a convention of little old men. I took a picture with him for memory's sake. Everyone in Hollywood knows A.C. too and he's another legend. I guess doing what you love really keeps you going! Plus, he confessed he liked the ladies - which totally cracked me up because I know it's true.

Not for me, but I'm sure many a young starlet has seen him as their ticket to meeting the power players they want to move their career ahead. I just always get flashes of Samantha from Sex in the City having sex with an older wealthy gentleman who gave her tons of jewelry and attention, but in the long run was too wrinkly and old for her even. Saggy butt scene anyone?

Back to Dawn. She was extremely focused and informative on all the functions of her department. It was very interesting to learn how they all played out together and how much responsibility she bore for whether or not a film is a success or not (at least that's what I took away.) Very nice, down-to-earth, accomplished, powerful woman. If you click to the earlier Variety article link you'll learn more of her background. You'd never guess it from meeting her she's so normal. Very nice to meet and hear her speak.

It was very interesting to receive the strategic plan for No Reservations, one of their films and see how every aspect is broken down and analyzed. Also, how the film is determined whether to play it as a comedy or a drama. I always wondered about that because so often you think you're going to see a comedy based on the marketing when in actuality it's a drama.

She explained it's easier to get people to see a comedy, which I would tend to agree with. I want to laugh when I go to the movies to escape my reality sometimes. She also passed out Michael Clayton hats. Now I feel like I need to see the movie!

Apparently right now WB spends 10% of their marketing budget on internet whereas the average in the industry is 4%. Speaking of which, here's a very clever funny youtube video highlighting the reasons the WGA Writers are striking to receive payment for internet use of their content. Who knew writers were so funny, right? HA!

I hope they resolve their issues soon, but I'm with the writers. Why should they not make money while the big conglomerates do? Go underdogs! Maybe one day I'll be in the Guild too. Who knows? I do like writing. Now if I could get paid for writing blogs... ha!

Immediately following Dawn, Terry Curtin, the CEO and Creative Director of Intralink Film, spoke and took apart the making of the American Gangster trailer. It was very interesting to see the other versions her company had created and the reasoning behind why they went with the final version. That is one movie I absolutely must see.

I was supposed to go with a bunch of friends after my last house party, but we were all having too much fun to leave. I will probably go see it tonight. I like the concept of one honest man overturning such crime and the other man being above the mafia. Very cool battle of good and evil. Go good!

That's one thing my pastor, Jim Mackinga, spoke about last Sunday which has really resonated with me. He said that when you're doing God's will no man will stop you, although they may reject you. So, man's rejection, as the saying goes, is God's protection. I'd rather be rejected 100 x over than be outside God's will for my life right now.

It's amazing how crystal clear things become when you hold it up to God's standards rather than your own. My friend Deb was trying to set me up with this handsome black guy she'd met because she knows I have a propensity for the brothers, but when I saw his ego and attitude towards women I opted out of even bothering to meet him. No time or interest.

Although I normally really like men who are super built and very handsome, I'm beginning to appreciate other types of guys for qualities that aren't usually worn on their body, but are part of their souls. I like a good soul now more than a hard body. Big change for me, but hey, even shallow blondes can change. Lately, I've been meeting really good guys and it's nice.

Now to my favorite speaker of the entire evening. Every time I hear about the amazing cause marketing this company is doing I can't believe they can top themselves and every time they do. Last night was no exception.

Dawn Wilcox-Bloch of Allison & Partners, named by Inc as one of the fastest-growing private companies in the country, was the final speaker. I had missed hearing her speak in Jeff Duclos' class a few semesters back and was eager to hear what she had to say, although I thought I had heard it all before since I'd taken Scott Pansky, the founder's Cause Marketing course and heard him speak numerous times. I couldn't have been more wrong.

She was one of the first speakers to actually take an interest in who we were as students and what our backgrounds were. It was so refreshing to be considered in that way since so many teachers, (Robert Dowling, former Hollywood Reporter Publisher and Editor in Chief included) just assumed they knew we were all just starting out and totally green. Uh huh. Many of us have been doing this for a bit, although there are some newbies too.

I doubt even Julian bothered to take the time to understand the make up of his class which might explain why people dropped out, or leave before all the speakers have finished speaking. Who likes being spoken to in a way that doesn't really suit what you're there to gain? There's publicity and then there's marketing which I think needs to go hand-in-hand in order for something to be successful. You need to know who you're appealing to in order to properly publicize something.

My marketing efforts are targeted and with a purpose. I've just posted a party I'm throwing this Friday around my building. I know for a fact that the majority of the guys in my apartment complex won't participate in my treasure mapping party because it's not a guy thing to typically do.

However, the reason I invited my building, which I just learned is one of the oldest Hermosa Beach apartment buildings according to my wise neighbor, is because I want to stake a claim on the back patio and alert them to the fact I plan to have a group of people over who they're welcome to join. Whether they do or not, is entirely up to them. I hope so, but it doesn't affect me either way.

Does this make sense? It's way early because my allergies are keeping me up and rather than just toss and turn I decided to write my thoughts down in hopes if I write enough I'll feel tired to sleep through the misery. Oy!

I get the worst allergies this time of year and it's debilitating. Makes me cranky and irritable and difficult to speak my glands swell so much and my nose constantly runs. OY! Even Claritin doesn't seem to be having any effect. I may just have to break down and go to the doctor. It was exactly like this last year around this time. I'm beginning to wonder if the stresses of the holiday season make my immune system weak or something.

Enough on that though. Back to the second Dawn and her amazing case study. I just love seeing how a simple marketing idea has grown into this huge effort and changed the lives of everyone involved. I would love to see something like that happen in Hermosa Beach. If the group I'm meeting with next week has any say, maybe we will!

So, here's the amazing story Dawn shared. Hasbro/Playskool is one of Allison & Partners' clients. They decided to benefit Boundless Playgrounds. Here's a little blurb from the web site which explains the concept and reason why there's a need for such a thing:

The  Challenge

More than six million children in the U.S. have a disability that makes it hard or impossible for them to join in the fun at a playground. All children deserve to have a place where they can experience the joy and discovery of play. Yet, most traditional playgrounds are not accessible to children with disabilities.

The  Solution

Boundless Playgrounds is dedicated to helping communities create extraordinary playgrounds where children of all abilities can play, explore and learn together. These playgrounds eliminate barriers for children with disabilities and offer fun, challenging and sensory-rich activities that offer developmental advantages to all.

Now here's the amazing part that Hasbro and Playskool are involved with:

Hasbro  & Boundless Playgrounds : Every Child Can Play

The joint mission of Hasbro and Boundless Playgrounds is for every child to have a BOUNDLESS playground within their reach. Hasbro is the first national founding sponsor of Boundless Playgrounds, providing financial gifts totaling over $1 million to date. Our PLAYSKOOL division has pledged $250,000 to help Boundless Playgrounds continue its mission. As a toy company, we believe in the importance of discovery and learning through play, and we are dedicated to helping bring this joy to every child in every community.

When I read of companies who are giving that much money back to the community at large it brings tears to my eyes. Especially listening to the story Dawn told last night. Apparently Hasbro decided to give one deserving community a $350,000 Boundless Playground as a gift as part of their marketing efforts. Here's another blurb from the web site:

You Can  Make a Difference in Your Community!

The National Center for Boundless Playgrounds is a nonprofit organization that assists communities in creating barrier-free playgrounds, which provide developmental advantages for children of all abilities. Let's ALL play...it  matters!

You have  the ability to make dreams come true! Visit the Boundless Playgrounds Web site for ideas on how to join PLAYSKOOL in helping kids of all abilities  have fun, such as:

  • Encouraging your community to build a BOUNDLESS playground by rallying other parents, educators, civic groups, business leaders, etc
  • Learning about supporting an effort already underway to  build a BOUNDLESS playground in your area

Let's ALL  play...it matters!

Apparently there was a contest to find the most deserving community to receive the $350,000 Boundless Playground gift from Hasbro. Dawn said they didn't really expect to get more than 50 entries because not only did the contestants have to write in why they felt they deserved it, they also had to have permission from the city to build the playground which was an extra step.

Well, they didn't receive 50 entries, but 1,000! Dawn had to narrow it down to the top 20 to present to Hasbro and then all 20 were informed they were finalists. They were invited to again submit why they deserved to win (or something like that - I'm vague on this particular detail because I was beginning to get very tired it was so late last night.)

A small community in Pennsylvania went all out and created a little video highlighting all the reasons why they should win and how it would benefit the community as a whole. Just watching the joy and excitement on all 500 little kindergarten through fifth graders in the video at the thought their school might win a playground brought tears to my eyes just watching. The Governor was on the video and numerous city officials explaining why and how this would bring together the community - it was amazing.

Then Dawn showed the video of the school actually learning they were the recipients of the award and then I couldn't stop crying. What an awesome thing to be involved in blessing that community like that. Apparently, even though McCullough Elementary School is 40 miles outside the major city, all along that 40 mile route to the school were signs in store windows thanking Hasbro/Playskool for their generous gift.

The community is still giving back in so many ways to others less fortunate as a result of this amazing gift which to a company like Hasbro is a small amount of money in the grander scheme of things. Now if only more companies would realize their responsibility to make their communities better rather than just taking all the time. There's so much good that can happen when people put their mind to it.

Here's some of the press release on the winners taken from the Hasbro site:

"Boundless Playgrounds®, Hasbro  Inc.’s (NYSE:HAS) PLAYSKOOL brand and GameTime, a playground equipment manufacturer,  today revealed that McCullough  Elementary School and the Penn-Trafford School District in Claridge, Pennsylvania, is the grand prize winner of the “PLAYSKOOL  Win a Boundless™ Playground Essay Contest” and will receive a Boundless™  playground in their community so children of all abilities can play together.

The essay, submitted jointly by third-grade teacher Scott Mickey and parent Lisa Popovich, beat out almost 1,000 entries which were received from 44 states plus the District of Columbia.  The goal of the contest is to raise awareness that playgrounds should not exclude children with disabilities – instead, playgrounds can and should be places where everyone is included in the fun.

“Scott and Lisa’s story provides a touching example of why universally accessible playgrounds are so vital to healthy children and communities,” said Amy Jaffe Barzach, executive director/co-founder of Boundless Playgrounds.  “We are so grateful to be able to provide such a deserving community with a playground that will provide joy and fuel imaginations for years to come, and it brings us one community closer to making this wish come true for children everywhere.”

McCullough Elementary School and the community surrounding the school will receive a Boundless™ playground worth up to $300,000 which is to be built at a site previously designated as a practice field adjacent to the elementary school and centrally located for community use.  Following is an excerpt from the winning essay:

“While our goal to differentiate instruction within McCullough Elementary School has been successful, our community playground outside has fallen behind and limits our children’s play, movement, and interactions. ‘To infinity and beyond’ is not realized on the old, rusty, and outdated equipment. Many of our student population cannot even access the equipment due to its height or lack of ramps.”

“We at PLAYSKOOL are proud to award McCullough Elementary School with one of the greatest gifts a community could ever receive, a place where children and parents of all abilities can connect without boundaries,” said Lorrie K. Browning, General Manager, PLAYSKOOL. “It has been an absolute pleasure working with Boundless Playgrounds over the years to help them grow as an organization and meet the vast need for universally accessible playgrounds, and we look forward to continuing our support in the future.”

“The overwhelming response this essay contest elicited only reinforces our resolve to help provide every child with a place where they can play and learn together with their peers,” said Tom Norquist of GameTime. “McCullough Elementary School’s story truly inspires us and we look forward to building them a playground they will use for years to come.”

It was more than a decade ago that Amy Jaffe Barzach lost her 9-month-old son to spinal muscular atrophy and decided to build a universally accessible playground, in his memory.  His family imagined that in Jonathan’s dreams playgrounds would be places where children of all abilities could celebrate life. The special playground built in Jonathan’s memory became the inspiration that led to Boundless Playgrounds being established.

As a founding national sponsor, Hasbro has been the organization’s most ardent supporter; the company has donated more than $1 million, helped establish a national resource center, launched an educational campaign, helped develop Boundless™ playgrounds in 24 disadvantaged communities across the country and sponsored two signature playgrounds in Rhode Island and Massachusetts."

Okay, I know that if you saw the video you would have an even greater understanding why this story is so amazing. My hope is that People Magazine or Oprah learn of it and cover it because it really was wonderful to see this community rally together.

At first you think, oh this community is only doing it because they want to win, but then when you watch the children's faces and see the purity in their desire, then you are blown away by the community spirit everyone exhibited. I hope Allison & Partners uploads all of their winning video on Youtube or something because you really must see it for yourself.

In the meantime, check out this very cute music video that all the students sang on to share their enthusiasm for winning this Boundless Playground. A parent wrote the lyrics and it still brings tears to my eyes watching it. I hope it does to you too.

This is what America is all about. Corporations giving to communities. Yes, Hasbro benefits in certain PR ways, but I'm also sure they benefit in deeper ways than even those involved expected to as well. Rumor has it that now Hasbro is considering turning their entire marketing budget into more promotions like this one. Just think. What if Hasbro became the next Extreme Makeover for children? I love it!

So, if you don't agree, or you are hardened to this effort and don't understand the value, I feel sorry for you. You must live a very selfish, self-centered life not to see the reason to reach out to your community and do something good rather than just party your life away or only live for yourself. But then again, who's to say you're even the type to read this? HA!

And with that, I'll close. May God richly bless you as you pursue your life. May He reveal His love for you in ways you can't even begin to imagine. May that expression of that love spill out into your life and affect those around you for good as well.

God loves you and so do I.

Now off to bed to sleep again hopefully.

Take care.

Sharefest, Groundlings, bibi davidson, Gali Rotstein, Bay Cities Community Church, Snow Goose Global Thanksgiving

By Joy A. Kennelly

This has been one packed weekend. I love times like this because I am very social and love being around lots of new people. I also like my time alone, but I needed to be around people to help deal with what I'm working through.

Hit the Sharefest Fundraiser Friday night which was a lot of fun. I was expecting to see more single guys there, but it was lots of single women and married couples. The fun part was seeing people I grew up with down here that I haven't seen in years and years because I was living in Hollywood and Santa Monica.

Some had changed and some hadn't changed at all. I also saw some people I wasn't expecting which was very surprising, but nice nonetheless. Maybe a little painful in light of the circumstances, but I dealt with it. I also enjoyed finally meeting Steve Napolitano face-to-face because I'd been contacting him regarding Hermosa Beach's crime for so long. Very nice, funny guy. Is he single? Just teasing.

I have been so cooped up working and going to classes so much I really haven't been out socializing like I normally do and man I was in rare form that night. I had my friends laughing the entire time we were greeting because I kept cutting jokes and making fun the whole time. When I'm on fire, I'm on fire. Can't help it.

My Dad has a great sense of humor and taught us to always see the humor in life. Plus, it makes you feel good to laugh right? I really needed to that night. It was fun to get dressed up too. I'm very casual and rarely dress up for work since I work from home and live a block from the beach, but love going out all decked out. Even curled my hair! Texas style if you get my lift...

I encourage everyone to come to next year's fundraiser for Sharefest because they have the best auction items - trips to exotic locations like Bali (two people bid $6,500 and each won!), amazing packages of products, great Christmas gifts, lots of stuff I was so impressed to see.

I've gone to a lot of silent auctions and this was the most extensive group of products I've seen in a long time - Laker tickets, some famous basketball player signed some sports shoes, and on and on. Very cool. Once I remember how to upload pix I'll put them in a special folder for you to see. I'm so impressed with the guys who created this entire organization - what dynamos! The entire South Bay really owes them a huge debt of gratitude for all their non-profit ventures to help the community.

Lots of people came out which was fun. I could have sworn this one guy came who looked like he was straight out of The Sopranos, only in a bright blue fedora and suit. Very handsome, distinguished gentleman who definitely wanted to be noticed. You were definitely noticed! :) There was a great mix of people. The place was packed. What a nice venue too.

The Marriott has really changed since I used to go there to dance in college with my friend Sheri. One time I wore my long African dress just because I felt like kicking back and not worrying about what guys thought. We had more fun that evening! She and I greeted people as they came in like we were the hotel greeters and then danced all night long with the guys we'd been joking around with. One guy told Sheri I looked like a dove on the dance floor. Fun memory. I love dancing. How about you?

As Sharefest volunteers we helped until the program started and then were able to join the large crowd for a nice dinner.  More auctioning went on and then the keynote speaker, Karen Ledebur began to speak.

Here's a little blurb from her bio:

"Kären also served as Associate Director for Corporate Planning and Development for the Beach Cities Health District in Redondo Beach. Her work there transformed the Health District from a behind-the-scenes grant making organization to the dynamic public health entity it is today."

I thought she'd speak about change from more of a business perspective, but instead she shared her personal story of survival and how God had touched her life through the hardships. She used pennies as an example of the need for us to make change in our lives. It was interesting and very encouraging, but went a little long. Just being honest.

I think when you're "on" for the public (like we had been as greeters,) it's very tiring and around 9:30pm Deb and I cut out. She had volunteered with me and it was great fun to have one of my best friends to hang out with. Stephanie, my new friend from Bible Study, was there too and she's so stylish! Hardly recognize her when I see her not wearing her scrubs because that's such a unisex and plain garb.

Anyway, it was a really fun evening and exactly what I needed.

Saturday hit my final Groundlings class which was also fun, but a little sad because it was going to be the last time I saw some of these people since they're jamming on to the next workshop right now whereas I'm going to wait till January.

It's ok though because I think when you work with new people in an improv setting you learn new ways of acting with people that makes you stronger in that type work. I may be wrong, but it just seems like this change will be good. Plus, a chance to make new friends!

We all went out afterwards for drinks and apps to celebrate completing the class. I haven't been drinking in a few months and the martini I had went straight to my head immediately. Today I've been fighting a head-ache all day which makes me feel like the buzz just isn't worth it in the long run. Now maybe if I was back in my floozy days I might do it more, but now...

After a bit, dashed off to my client, bibi davidson's art opening which I believe was a huge success. So many of my friends showed up (even my former client, Domiziano Arcangeli, made a rare Santa Monica appearance) and bibi's studio was constantly packed with people. I think her space more so than some of the other artists...I was very happy to see that because I'd been doing so much publicity and inviting people it made it all worthwhile.

I'm hoping some papers I invited might have popped in too since I had a nice email from an editor indicating he liked the information I'd been sending out. We'll see.

I'm going to do a photo spread  and wrap up of that even in my other professional blog - thejoywriterpr which I started on wordpress. Again, once I figure out how to upload the pix. I'm hoping it's just like riding a bike and I'll remember right away. They are a lot of fun. bibi is such a character. I think she and her art are great.

Then Glen, my new bud, and I popped over to Bergamot Station to check out all the openings over there. Of course, James Gray Gallery had the best party as always. This one was a fundraiser for Artists for Human Rights. It was nice to see the Gallery Director and say hello. Also spoke for a bit to Artist, Stephen Bennett.

Both Glen and I could swear he was painting over the photographs he took of indigenous people, but Stephen says he paints from memory and off the pic, not on the pic. It's almost too perfect though, but whatever. I don't really care either way. It's very cool any way he creates the images - check out his link and you'll see what I'm talking about.

Then quickly ran over to Tarryn Teresa's Gallery. The more I understand about the art world, the more I'm impressed with Tarryn and Claressinka for doing what they're doing with this very cool gallery space. They're both so young and beautiful sometimes it's hard to believe that they, and Elizabeth, their counter-part, actually run this wonderful gallery. Kudos girlfriends! Keep up the good work on bringing interesting art to a younger, hip generation like you do so well.

Lastly we hit Lois Lambert's Gallery since Gali Rotstein, my other artist client, will be holding an exhibit there in January 2008. She's part of the Group '08 show and has four really cool pieces of art that will be on display. You'll have to save January 12 on your calendar and plan to join us ok? She's going to be huge, mark my words. And I'm not just saying that. Big time art people agree with me. I just have good taste what can I say? :)

Back to LLG. It was a little uncomfortable to walk in and see someone who I'd stopped being friends with years back, but we agreed to act as if the other didn't exist and I walked past without incident. It was only a matter of time before we saw each other again since she was the one who introduced me to the whole art world years back and she's the one who originally brought me to Bergamot. Oh well, thanks for the education, right? LOL

Life's too short to hold grudges, but to those of you who do, God bless you richly. I don't live like that, but if you must - hope it's working for you. LOL I guess I've just had too much therapy and healing to allow petty things hold me back any more.

I will get through the pettiness that's going on right now too, but have to admit that I was crying all morning over some of it. It just seemed like it was too much to bear any more, but my good friends I called loved me through it. My new pedicure helped too. Plus, I was able to go to a really cool Thanksgiving celebration today with Glen and his roomie Phil which really lifted my spirits.

I think it was just Jim's message on rejection really got to me. I don't cry very easily, but I just sat there crying for most of his message. However, I'm in a total different head space now. I'm glad I have good people in my life. I hope you do too. Again, life's too short to waste it on mean people.

All day was healing actually. Jim's sermon was great as always. Here's the notes since you might not have made it this morning. May it bless you as much as it blessed me - I'll tell you more about this amazing feast celebrating peace and world harmony called Snow Goose after the message.

The Answer to Rejection

"How God Wants us to Deal With Pain"

Why Rejection is so painful
(The lie - that other's opinions can determine our value.)

1. It's a form of relational murder. (Murder is the ultimate ending of a relationship. Hate is prolonged suicide.)

Matthew 5:21-23:

Murder

21"You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, 'Do not murder,[a] and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.' 22But I tell you that anyone who is angry with his brother[b]will be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to his brother, 'Raca,[c]' is answerable to the Sanhedrin. But anyone who says, 'You fool!' will be in danger of the fire of hell.

2. It's an attack on our God given value. (People feel if they can remove your value then they can disrespect you, but God says you have value and you matter.)

1 John 3:2:
2Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when he appears,[a]we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is.

Romans 8:17:
17Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.

1 John 4:10:
10This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for[a] our sins.

Wisdom in dealing with rejection - know where true acceptance is found.

1. It's not based on my performance.

Titus 3:5 & 7
5he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, 7so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life.

2. It's not based on the approval of others.

Proverbs 29:25:

25 Fear of man will prove to be a snare,
but whoever trusts in the LORD is kept safe.

Psalm 56:11:

11 in God I trust; I will not be afraid.
What can man do to me?

Matthew 10:28:
28Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.

3. It is based on my relationship to Christ.

Romans 8:1:

Life Through the Spirit

1Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus,[a]

Romans 5:8:
8But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

9Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God's wrath through him! 10For if, when we were God's enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life! 11Not only is this so, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.

Since God Accepts Me - the truth is

1. It doesn't matter what others think of me.

Romans 8:31:

31What, then, shall we say in response to this? If God is for us, who can be against us?

2. He has assigned to me eternal value.

Romans 8:32:
32He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?

3. No one can cause God to reject me.

Romans 8:35-37:
35Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? 36As it is written:
   "For your sake we face death all day long;
we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered."[a] 37No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.

4. Nothing I do will cause God to reject me.

Romans 8:38-39:
38For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons,[a] neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, 39neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Steps in dealing with rejection

1. Never let approval of others control you.

Galatians 6:10:
10Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.

Galatians 1:10:

10Am I now trying to win the approval of men, or of God? Or am I trying to please men? If I were still trying to please men, I would not be a servant of Christ.

2. Grow in your relationship with Jesus Christ.

Psalm 9:10:

10 Those who know your name will trust in you,
for you, LORD, have never forsaken those who seek you.

3. Graciously accept others as God requires.

Romans 15:7:

7Accept one another, then, just as Christ accepted you, in order to bring praise to God.

End note - People who don't fear rejection have a greater capacity to love.

Amen and amen. The special music by Steve Jordan was especially nice today too. He really does have a great voice. Sorry about being petty last week SJ. We're family so... Okay, that's the sermon from today. Hope you enjoyed reading it and learned something. I know I did. Really touched my heart today.

Another event that touched my heart today was the special Thanksgiving feast called Snow Goose my friend Glen invited me to attend today.

Here's info from the web site:

Our Mission
To promote a celebration of peace, harmony and abundance through a festive atmosphere that embraces the beauty and solidarity among all people.
Our Goal
To implement one thousand locations with a thousand people at each site by 2012 and one million locations by 2026, moving our collective human-being-consciousness into another frequency of dreaming, thinking, and doing. Remember, we were all indigenous people at one time and wild and free and directly connected to the lifeforce of Creation. We can do this. We really can!
Our Vision
In 1992 Victor Villaseñor was giving a talk in a bookstore packed full of people in Portland, Oregon on his latest book Rain of Gold, when a local native asked him what was he going to do about Columbus.
Thanksgiving Ceremony
We’re asking each of you, to take a personal pledge that where ever you are, who ever you’re with, with or without a candle – at sunset, on Thanksgiving, you will take a moment to send peace and harmony through out the whole world.
Starting Your Own
It's easy. We don't want to reinvent the wheel. So contact your local church, your local grammar school, high school, and/or college. Get your local Rotarians and/or Soroptimists involved. Any service group that's inclusive and comes from the heart. Get together and have an old-fashion potluck on the Sunday before Thanksgiving.

Now imagine around 1,000 people spreading love and good will around the world at dusk tonight holding candles after hearing a great rendition of Amazing Grace. What a great way to spend today! That's what we did! Can't you just see it in your mind? All races, all ages, all socioeconomic reflected today.

We arrived at this huge estate owned by the host, Author Victor Villasenor, around 2pm, enjoyed a great turkey potluck dinner and then heard a great Latin Orchestra perform and watched people salsa dance for two hours before this ceremony. I love days like this that are totally unique and community-oriented. Lots of great music, great food, great dancing, and good times.

Plus, peace and good will to one and all. So, now I'm going to watch the American Music Awards so you have a good one y'all. Today can't get much better! Lovin' the music! One of these years I want to attend the show!

Good night and God bless.

Money, Money, Money! I won the pitching contest!

By Joy A. Kennelly

As a publicist, when you're pitching the media you have very limited time to get your point across. As a result, you learn to speak quickly, succinctly and cover all your bases in a minute or less.

That training came in handy today when I participated in the pitching contest in front of 3 venture capitalists judges during the final day of StartupLA which was a great "unconference" as they like to call it!

I've never, ever pitched a product in person like that before in front of an audience no less and it was a little intimidating to say the least, but afterwards I knew I'd nailed it. I was affirmed by the judges who said I'd done a great job which made me hopeful that I'd won, but still unsure because there were a couple others I felt were good too. I was so nervous my face was twitching during the judge's critique! I hope no one else saw that!:)

I wasn't able to stay because I had my class and asked a friend to accept on my behalf in the event I did win. She agreed as long as the main organizer agreed and she was fine with it so I raced off to Hollywood.

I was on such a high! It was like all these years of toiling away behind the scenes had paid off and I was validated as a professional in front of my peers. I've sold things since I was a child and am extremely competitive. As a result, when I came to the event today it was with the sole purpose of winning. I didn't even know there was a prize, but when I came out of my class I had 2 messages telling me I'd won a $1,000!

How cool is that? What a great event! I know how much work goes into organizing events having produced numerous events over the years. The speakers and sessions they produced were very impressive. I hope you make the next one!

I caught the tail end of Jason Calacanis' speech the night before and he totally cracked us up with his blunt observations on what it's like to be an entrepreneur. Anyone who's been doing this for any length of time could totally relate. He was a riot! If you EVER get the chance to hear him speak, do. You won't regret it at all.

He runs Mahalo along with Mark Jeffrey and it seems like it's a very cool company. A human driven search engine I believe - very cool.

StartupLA was very interesting because there were so many tech people and I haven't seen that many since the early days of the tech boom. People who are involved in the tech world are always extremely creative, extremely bright and extremely driven which I just love being around.

It was a great experience and I highly, highly recommend you attend the next one when it happens. I met some amazing VC's, heard some great speakers, saw people I haven't seen in a while, and met some cool entrepreneurs. Very fun and informative. Loved it!

Now to collect my money. Still can't believe I won a $1,000 doing what I do all the time! I'm thinking I should hire myself out to help entrepreneurs sell their ideas to VC's as a business! Couldn't you just see it now? I could pitch people's businesses at various VC contests (if such beasts even exist), win the prize money and take a commission off the money funded!

We'll see. Stranger things have happened, eh? I just got a call from someone whose work I highly respect and it came out of the blue. Could be a new direction for me and I'm all for it. For those of you interested in learning what it was I pitched, here's my winning 60 second pitch about Travel Play Company  and the Travel Tray in a nutshell (give or take a few things because I was in the zone and can't really remember everything!)

$1,000 60 second winning pitch

My name is Joy Kennelly and I've been involved in PR & Marketing for the past 10 years. Recently I was hired to represent Travel Play Company and the Travel Tray for children. (I had a sample of the product and pulled it out to show how it worked and what it looked like.) This helps children keep their food and toys in their laps when traveling.

It retails for $19.95 or $24 and is manufactured for $3, but with mass production can be reduced to $1.50. The main target market we see this product sold to is the auto industry, next is the airline industry and basically anyone who has children. We've sold 1,000 pieces to date with minimal advertising support.

The company is looking to sell the patent, license the product or sell the company. I see it as a company in a box because it's ready to go with the right funding.

Okay, now I'm fuzzy. I think that's all I said - correct me if I'm wrong. I was so nervous! Anyway, it was a great experience and I'm eager to do it again for other companies and products. I love competition! Plus, I love the money! We shall see!

BTW, Travel Play really is for sale as is the patent. Contact me if you're interested. (the contact button is messed up and you really do need to contact me for any info ok? Thanks!)

Let's make a deal!

There was a minor mis-connect afterwards which prevented me from taking the check home tonight, but I've been assured the "check is in the mail." Can't wait! Pretty cool for a minute's work, eh?

After that, dashed downtown to the Murakami exhibit at The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA. It was the perfect way to wind down because it was like walking through another world. At one point I felt like I entered a whacked out It's A Small World from Disneyland it was so absolutely wild.

Another room felt like Wizard of Oz on drugs... Huge almost 2 story fantastical Anime sculptures, HUGE floor to ceiling, wall-to-wall paintings filled with bold colors, wild crazy images and lots of detail.

It was a little overwhelming after the day I'd been having. Almost too much sensory overload because the Geffen is a HUGE almost warehouse like space with lots of large rooms filled with lots of amazing, over-the-top pieces of art as sculptures, paintings, installations, media etc. I LOVED IT!

If you see only one art show this year, please make the effort to see this one. It will blow you away. I can only imagine what the curator and programmer went through to pull this all together.

I've never seen such variety of work on such a large scale ever. It was like walking through a crazy mixed up world of Japanese Anime art that someone crazy had come up with, but not in a scary way, more like a great big adult playhouse if this makes sense.

This exhibit is absolutely brilliant in my humble opinion. I'm going to go back to see it when there aren't so many people around, however, with the turn-out tonight I'm sure the crowds aren't going away any time soon. I think all MOCA's members came out for this event it was so packed! People watching was at a high because of it being Halloween weekend - lots of costumes, interesting people and children too!

My friend and I arrived on the early side and there were still lines out the doors for the video room and the Louis Vuitton store. Simply breathtaking and awe-inspiring to think all that art came from one person. I was blown away and I'm sure you will be too. Check it out and let me know what you think!

You have to like modern art obviously! I believe I heard rumor it's the only US Exhibit Murakami is holding. The show runs through February 11, 2008 - Run, don't walk to see this exhibit. You'll be glad you did.

Afterwards enjoyed great fish and chips at The Village Idiot courtesy of my good friend Adrienne of Magnolia PR who celebrated my win with me. She's had some great wins for clients recently too and as soon as she sends me the tear sheets I'll share it with you. She and I work really well together and she's going to help me spread the word on Travel Play Company too which will be great!

Okay, that's all for now. Have a good one!

Somewhere over the rainbow... Today was great!

By Joy A. Kennelly

I'm very tired, but my neighbor is listening (very loudly) to the Somewhere over the rainbow song by that Hawaiian singer which is nice music to write by so here I am. Aloha!:) I must say, he has a great stereo system and nice taste in music so it's cool to listen to (except when I'm trying to sleep, but I just turn on the air filter and a scripture CD and before I know it I'm out like a light.)

Today was busy, but fun. I went to pick up my new client, Travel Play Company's donation of 20 boxes of their travel tray for children to use while traveling. We figured since a lot of kids were now homeless they would like to have a little tray to keep all their toys and projects on their lap in one place, or at least their parent's would appreciate it as they drove around. Plus, they were brand new.

We took the truck over to the Rose Bowl for the fire victim donations and were almost turned away by the American Red Cross, but the workers helping me spoke in Spanish to another Spanish official and he loved the idea. Fortunately I had flyers to show what it was and how to use it which were very helpful. We gave 500 pieces altogether.

I hope it blesses the kids and families who receive them as much as it blessed us to participate in this effort. Apparently the American Red Cross and ABC 7 partnered with Save the Children non-profit to distribute everything. What a shame about all the terrible loss for everyone. I hope they catch the arsonist and people responsible.

Thanks for your prayers regarding my friend Deborah's family cabin and her boyfriend's mom's place. Both are safe. She was very grateful to read that I'd done that and I know some of you took the time to bless her in that way so thank you!

Afterwards, drove over to UCLA for the entrepreneur conference which went well. Very funny, interesting key note speaker Mark Jeffrey who apparently according to Variety was one of the top 50 creatives to watch in Hollywood. Turns out he lived in Redondo Beach for a time.

Ever notice when you start to focus on something then everywhere you turn that comes up? I'm focused on the South Bay and now everywhere I go outside of the area I meet people from here. Too funny.

Just the other day at the Women's Conference I was walking the exhibit hall and bumped into a friend I see occasionally around town. Turns out Pamela's a board member for a non-profit called Women At Risk for women affected by HIV Aids based in the South Bay. See what I mean? Here I was in Long Beach and now here I meet her and learn about her life experience for the first time.

It's such a worthy cause because there are so many women affected by this awful disease and surprisingly enough, there are many Women at Risk support groups in the South Bay especially. Very sad, but hopeful too in a way. Here's a link to Pamela's CNN interview explaining her personal story and info on the non-profit in case you're interested.

This is a story I wish The Beach Reporter or The Easy Reader would highlight in our community papers. In fact there are so many interesting people, companies, etc. located down here whose stories are never told because people who've lived down here for any time forget how special we really are as a community.

How many other communities up and down the coast like this sleepy beach area have major professional athletes, newscasters or CEO's in their neighborhoods? Maybe more than I realize, but I like to think we're a little unique.:)

What about covering the actual candidates running for Hermosa Beach City Council so those who haven't made the debates could read an interview with them and know a little more where each of them stand? Just a thought editors.

Although I have to admit I enjoyed reading the Beach Reporter article on John Gurrola who claims to have amnesia on which bars were supporting his efforts to recruit people to keep the pier status quo. Maybe all the drinking has reduced his brain cells so much it's difficult to remember anything.

Funny how he's a Redondo Beach resident, yet he's interested in the Hermosa Beach elections. Go figure. Fight for your right to party right party boy? Check out his myspace page.

Anyway, now my neighbor is moving on to Lambamba and I'm over the music. Time to go, but just know it was a good day. I'm beat and have to get up early to turn around and catch the rest of the conference (I'm pitching Venture Capitalists!)

Then, off to my Groundling's class before hitting the Murakami/MOCA exhibit later on. Can't wait! I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE modern contemporary art, especially when it's so fun like this is.

Okay, have a good one. I'm outie.

Remarkable Lives. Remarkable Legacies. What's Yours?

By Joy A. Kennelly

Before I begin the wrap-up of yesterday's wonderful Women's Conference, I just want to extend my deepest sympathy to those whose lives and homes have been devastated by the wildfires. I experienced a fire evacuation living in Malibu many years back and I'll never forget the outpouring of kindness from strangers during my time of need.

If you'd like to help, a fellow Brunching Lady posted this announcement as a resource:

The Red Cross of Santa Monica is looking for volunteers to support Canteen  Services at the Malibu Fire staging area thru the next 48 hours and possibly  longer. They are also recruiting for Greater L.A. area Evacuation/Shelters. If  you are interested in volunteering please contact Beverly Holms via email at
[email protected] or Mark Solnick  at [email protected]

My best friend's cabin in Lake Arrowhead is under attack and her boyfriend's brother has already lost his Fallbrook home. Now his mother's home is under attack. Please pray for them and also all the others who are under siege. What's so sad to me is that an arsonist was involved in at least one of the fires. I hope they catch that person and put them away for a long time. What devastation.

I know going to a women's conference rather than volunteering immediately could be seen as callous or selfish, but I believe this event raised the consciousness of 14,000 women who attended on ways they could help via the American Red Cross which will perhaps have a greater impact in the long run. I don't know, I hope so though.

There were so many high-level female CEO's, Senior management etc who participated you never know what they will do once they return to their companies. I was very impressed that Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger chose to skip dialoging with former Prime Minister Tony Blair to participate fully in the relief efforts instead. I don't care what your politics are, you have to admire the way he's taken control of this situation and helped us receive federal aid so quickly.

I loved watching the interview this morning with I believe it was Good Morning America and the reporter kept trying to find something wrong with the way things had been handled. Arnold at one point, just took her by the hand and told her straight to her face you can try to find something wrong all you want, but this has been very positive and has been handled beautifully. That will remain to be seen, but for now, I want to believe that's the case so allow me this for now. I love it when men take charge! Go Ahnold!

You do have to admit this was handled drastically differently than Katrina and I'm so glad to see the government seemingly has learned from their mistakes. However, I'm sure good 'ole Rev. Jesse Jackson and his crony, Al Sharpton will soon be saying it was a race thing that this was handled so quickly. GIVE ME A BREAK!

I'm so sick of their racist talk. When are they ever going to realize that as long as you claim to be a victim you will be a victim? Maybe I'm misinformed and maybe I don't know enough about what they do, but that's my personal opinion of them based on what I've seen and heard.

Yes, Katrina was shameful and there was no excuse for how it was handled, but please don't turn this wildfire disaster into a race issue. The families who are so devastated don't need to hear that on top of everything else they're going through. Plus, don't you think Rev. Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton, maybe we as the American public could be a little sick of you always taking advantage of certain situations for your own personal platform? ENOUGH ALREADY!

I was invited to attend the inaugural breakfast for the National Academy of Media Arts & Sciences which I would have gone to, but the idea of getting up super early to drive up to Hollywood to hear Rev. Jesse Jackson as the guest speaker was revolting.

I can't stand him on TV and I will definitely not waste time hearing him in person. Sorry organizers. Yes, there are people in Hollywood who have different opinions than the majority. My son is half Nigerian and I don't want him to ever think his race plays a part in whether or not he is successful in life.

I would love to see an African American man or woman who is making positive contributions to society begin to be the mouthpiece for this community rather than Rev. Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton. If you're out there, please speak now or forever hold your peace.

Actually, yesterday Sweet Alice Harris of Watts was honored with a Minerva Award for her work rebuilding Watts after the horrific riots and ever since. Here's a little blurb on her from another web site:

Sweet Alice, Executive Director of Parents of Watts in Los Angeles, presides over more than 15 programs that operate on a shoestring, combining contracts and support from community businesses. POW provides emergency food and shelter for the homeless; conducts health seminars; provides legal and drug counseling; promotes harmony among Hispanics, Koreans, and blacks; operates a program for unwed mothers; and prepares young people for the job market and for college.

Now she's someone I will listen to and come hear speak over and over and over again. This woman has dedicated her life to rebuilding her community and realizes that it's not race that is the issue, but self dignity and self respect regardless of race, color or creed. The men in charge of selecting speakers for NAMAS could learn something from this humble woman.

That's why it was so important for this women's conference to continue as originally planned and for Maria Shriver to lead it the way she did. In this male-dominated society where so often it's only a male perspective that is heard and followed, we as women leaders and nurturers need a day where our talents, our abilities, our leadership and our womanhood is celebrated.

We need to see that there are amazing women making contributions to society who are the unsung heroes of America. We need to know that it is possible to run major corporations and do it with grace, humor, style and determination. We need to be inspired to grow and develop into the leaders we were meant to be and you can only do that by seeing and hearing people who encourage, exhort and develop you as women.

First Lady Maria Shriver may receive some flak from the media for not being by her husband's side as the devastation was raging around our state, but I think she was right where she was supposed to be - with all 14,000 of us leading, inspiring and encouraging us to be all we were meant to be. You really must hear the speech she gave once it's uploaded on the web site. It was the most moving, vulnerable, honest, heartfelt speech I have ever heard from someone in her position.

Despite all her wealth, fame, family connections, and political connections, she revealed her humanity and allowed us to see her flaws and all. I know it profoundly affected those in attendance. Later on at lunch I was privileged to sit at a table with Actress Rita Wilson and Screenwriter Nora Ephron. What a gracious, warm, giving person Rita Wilson is (oh and she produces, directs and writes too!) It was very interesting to hear her recount Maria's speech to Nora and explain the impact it had on her life. That's what I'm talking about people.

It doesn't matter what level of success and acclaim you've received. We are women first and foremost. We cry, we feel, we laugh, we help, we hurt, we encourage, we love and we are so much more than our titles, our positions, our jobs, our families, our responsibilities. We are so amazing and it's time we embrace that we are unique simply by virtue of our gender. I'm not sure that's what Maria expected me to take away from her speech, but that's my take-away - take it or leave it!

When all is stripped away and we are left alone with simply ourselves - who are we really? To hear someone like her with all her accomplishments and everything else she has experienced in her life get back to such basics it was really wonderful to share that moment with her.

What I loved also during Eunice Kennedy Shriver's acceptance of her Minerva Lifetime Achievement Award was that she gave us three wishes (which I'm horribly paraphrasing - please excuse me) for us which are as follows:

1. She wished us the love of a family. She said if we didn't have a family to find the love of people who will treat you like family.

2. She wished for us to channel our feelings of injustice and anger into something positive. Her older sister was intellectually challenged and that is what has motivated Eunice to create over 165 Special Olympics all over the world. What an awe-inspiring woman she is.

3. Follow Maria. That was so sweet to hear because coming from Eunice that was the highest compliment she could have paid her daughter. I have to tell you after attending this conference I will follow Maria anywhere!

What an amazing woman she is too. I don't personally know her and for those of you who do and have other feelings about her - keep them to yourself. I like what I saw and heard and I want to remain impressed because I desperately  need female role-models who are making a difference.

There are many male leaders with flaws and yet it seems like society likes to tear down women faster for some reason. It's time we accept and embrace women as leaders flaws and all too. They're only human and doing the best they can. Let's come alongside and help them become better rather than tear them down ok? What a novel concept!

What I found interesting yesterday during my time escorting Campbell Soup President Denise Sullivan Morrison, was the fact she said that after her and her three other sister's appearance on the Today Show
she received numerous emails which she said she put into three piles. One pile from people sharing how happy they were to hear about Father/Daughter stories since that's rarely been told. A 2nd pile which I forget (sorry - Denise if you read this, please put a comment at the bottom to explain.) and the 3rd pile from people telling her it was so nice to hear about a CEO who hadn't been indited! What does that say about our society?

What I thought was great about all four "Sullivan Sisters" (who I had the privilege of getting to know by virtue me and my other associates needed to escort them around as a team for their speaking engagement), is that although all four had achieved tremendous success in their lives, they were all still extremely humble and had a sense of humor about them. How rare!

I'll have to share about their talk in another blog because I want to give an overview to the conference and don't have a lot of time. Just know, these women and so many other speakers were so inspirational I was on such a high after that day. Exhausted, but on a high!

There were so many great speakers it will be hard to highlight all, but I believe Lifetime will be showcasing this event on their web site or channel if you get a chance to watch. It's highly worth it.

Thomas Friedman
, Author & Pultizer Prize-winning New York Times Columnist, had some great comments to make about leadership. He quoted someone who had said, "Pessimists are usually right. Optimists are usually wrong, but optimists are the ones who change the world." I love that! Yes, I'm an optimist and proud of it.

I also loved it when he introduced Arnold Schwarzeneger as "Maria Shriver's husband." Thomas definitely knew what he was doing at this women's conference. Arnold communicated to us from the fires via satellite. There were constant well wishes for the firefighters and those devastated by the fires which brought this issue to the forefront of our minds despite being in the conference which I thought was very cool.

Especially when the American Red Cross was given the opportunity to encourage people to donate blood and other resources because I know they weren't originally on the schedule, but this emergency took precedence. So, if anyone has anything to say against Maria Shriver for not being with her husband during this day, please realize that her efforts to influence 14,000 compassionate, driven, motivated women will do more to help this emergency effort than for her to be merely an appendage of her husband on site. There, I've said it. Enough already.

I was thrilled to actually hear former Prime Minister Tony Blair speak because I loved watching The Queen and was very impressed with his portrayal in that film. I was curious to see him live and in person. I was not disappointed.

He's charming, personable, diplomatic, intelligent, funny, and down-to-earth (just like in the film - hee hee!) and I was very impressed with him. I'm not into politics and never watched his speeches on Iraq or anything else so don't know his political stance, but I admire him as a man and human being.

I thought Thomas Friedman was an excellent interviewer (as did the Pulitzer Prize people!:) and when he asked Tony (yes, we're on a first name basis now) what he thought about learning, Tony replied, "Ask who are your favorite teachers of all your friends and then take whatever they're teaching."

I found that statement very interesting in light of the fact Back to College for a Day has done just that and is offering that type learning experience for adults! Way to go Audrey! I wish you much success this weekend and hope lots of people sign up - it's not too late!

Tony also said, "Leadership is better after listening." Thomas agreed and said, "Be a good listener - it's a sign of respect. It's amazing what people will say when they know you respect them." When Thomas asked Tony what he thought of the Queen, Tony laughed and then said, "She's very shrewd. Pretty much universally loved by British people and I admire her very much." Spoken like a true politician, and I believe he meant every word.

Then they discussed the technological advances our world has made and how that is impacting our lives today. Thomas shared how he had traveled to India to visit the equivalent to Microsoft over there and was invited to speak to American interns who had chosen to learn in that environment to help set them apart from their colleagues back home. That was very interesting to hear. These students realized that to stand out in today's environment they needed to show the ability to collaborate and get along with people.

Tony said, in light of everything technological, "don't forget the importance of inter-personal skills." He said when he wanted to raise his children to have these qualities: "happy, optimistic, get along with others, politeness, good manners (because) it was about as good as an education."

Now if only Jody Williams, Nobel Peace Prize-winning organizer, activist, teacher and writer's people had gotten this into their thick skulls when asked to accommodate the speakers at the speakers only table. I've never seen such rude, entitled, selfish, haughty women for no reason at all! GET A CLUE WOMEN! You are nothing and you need to realize that just because you're with a Nobel Peace Prize speaker it doesn't give you the right to be disrespectful to others you come across. Maybe if they read this they'll see themselves and change, but I doubt it. Once a bitch, generally always a bitch (unless they find God! LOL)

Enough on those women though, there were so many other amazing women it's not worth focusing on them, but I did want them to know their actions and behavior was appalling. Speaking of human behavior, the aspect of Tony Blair I especially admired was that he realized he gave up his right to privacy by taking such a public role.

When asked by Thomas about the current interaction of modern media and public life under 24 hours scrutiny, he said, "it was a privilege to do these jobs." However, he added, "The public has to be willing to accept the human side of the public leader....The relationship between public and politicians need understanding all the way around."

That was a perfect way to view the conversation Maria Shriver held with the Presidential Spouses interview. Elizabeth Edwards, Cindy Hensley McCain, Michelle Obama, Ann Romney, and Jeri Thompson were all part of this discussion and it was great to hear them live and in person.

Due to my escorting the VIP's all day I was able to sit on the floor of the auditorium and had great seats the entire day. I must say, of all the wives, Elizabeth Edwards and Michelle Obama were my favorites. What grace, class, intelligence, wisdom, and down-to-earth women. I admire all of the women who spoke. I haven't begun to explore who I intend to vote for come election time, but after hearing all of these women speak I know a little better who I won't be casting my vote for!

I think Fred Thompson's wife, Jeri, is very sweet, but too focused on being a mother (as she should be, but not if she wants to have any influence on our country for the greater good.) She admitted herself that she has a lot to learn which I thought was very cool. However, knowing Fred Thompson's age, her inexperience in this realm, their small children and her lack of opinions on public policy, I don't see "them" as strong candidates at all!

I thought it would have been funny to have Bill Clinton there as the "First Man" but I liked the fact it was all women. Michelle Obama is fantastic! She has such a grip on reality and is so real and intelligent I would vote for Obama by virtue of knowing she's on his team any day. Elizabeth Edwards the same thing.
What a warm, compassionate, wise woman she is.

Not to say the others weren't, but I thought Ann Romney talked too much and I think at a certain point you need to know when to speak and when not to. Cindy McCain came out on crutches and I liked her as a person, but she seemed a little distant. Could just be her personality or her bleached hair, but it was a little off putting. Now after reading more about her, I'm very impressed. She needs media training to learn how to express herself and all she is because she's great! I love that she wants to make a difference in foster care!

When I vote however, I won't be voting for the wives, but the husbands so these women are a moot (see Mike I learn...) point.

Anyway, there are so many other amazing speakers, but I need to get to work so I must end. More later I promise. There were just too many good ones not to share more!

Have a great day!

The Women's Conference - briefed today - AWESOME!

By Joy A. Kennelly

What an amazing line-up for tomorrow's Women's Conference! I'm so blown away that I get to be part of it. Now THIS is a women's conference like a women's conference should be done - no silly speeches, few stupid booths, but lots of impactful, accomplished men and women speaking about issues that really matter.

How exciting to hear Prime Minister Tony Blair and Her Majesty Queen Rania Al-Abdullah of Jordan and so many other people I'd never imagined I'd actually get to hear speak live and in person. So many I've read their books, seen their films, heard them speak on the radio or TV, was interviewed by one, and others I've just wanted to learn from.

Apparently, the most popular discussion with the media will be with the four Presidential candidate's wives. Can't wait!

I'm thrilled to be escorting Denise Sullivan Morrison, one of the four Sullivan sisters who will be speaking on Raising Women Leaders: Four Sisters at the Top. Can't wait to hear that panel! It's very exciting to hear from women leaders because so often I feel so alone as one because there's so many men who are powerful in business, but very few women.

I was getting choked up just walking around the convention center realizing that this is for all of us women. Here's the Pledge for the Conference which also got me a little choked up. I'm taking this pledge and encourage you to do so too if you're female and you're reading this.

Our goal is to have The Women's Conference be more than just a day. We want you to have an experience that will encourage you to live your own life -- not that of your kids or your husband, not that of your boss or coworkers, but your own remarkable life.

So we've come up with a Conference Pledge we hope will focus and guide you to that goal.   We believe that by taking this pledge, we will come together with a shared sense of purpose:  that in empowering ourselves to live our own legacies, we can help other women do the same.

Ten Things I Pledge to Myself

  1. I pledge to "show up" in my life as myself, not as an imitation of anyone else.
  2. I pledge to avoid using the word "just" to describe myself.   For example, I won't say,  "I'm just a mother,"  "I'm just a student," or "I'm just an ordinary person."
  3. I pledge to give myself ten minutes of silence and stillness every day to get in touch with my heart and hear my own voice.
  4. I pledge to use my voice to connect my dreams to my actions.
  5. I pledge to use my voice to empower myself and others.
  6. I pledge to serve my community at least once a year in a way that will benefit other women.
  7. I pledge to ask myself, "Who am I?  What do I believe in?   What am I grateful for?   What do I want my life to stand for?"
  8. I pledge to sit down and write my own mission statement.
  9. I pledge to live my own legacy.
  10. And I pledge to pass it on.

Amen Sisterhood! God bless!

More tomorrow... Can't wait!

At long last, Gali's gallery debut(s)! Moving, moving, moving

By Joy A. Kennelly

I'm very happy to announce that Gali Rotstein of the Ken and Gali Rotstein's has been accepted to not one, but five gallerys! Of course, she can't accept all five offers, but it was so nice to see her work validated by so many fine gallery directors.

Each one was unique in what they were known for and specialized in which made it extremely difficult to narrow the choice down. Especially when she liked the people so much. However, at this point in her art career it was important to select a path that will lead her in the ultimate direction she wants to have.

So! I'm happy to announce that you will finally be able to see Gali's work for yourself up close and personal at the infamous Bergamot Station's very own world renowned Lois Lambert Gallery whose director, Lois Lambert herself, is known internationally as an authority on functional art. The other name for the gallery is Gallery of Functional Art or GFA. It's the perfect place for Gali to debut because her artwork fits so well in this genre.

Mark your calendars now because Gali's art debut and grand art opening with GFA as part of Group '08 is Saturday, January 12, 2008 and will run through March 9, 2008.  She's thrilled to be part of the prestigious Bergamot Station and Lois Lambert's Gallery as her Los Angeles debut for Requiem for a Housewife.

The other announcement I am able to finally make is that Sara Cannon, curator of the equally prestigious Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery, went to visit Gali's home studio awhile back, saw her work and said, (a direct quote) "I really like her exuberance and talent....I would like to show her when I get the right show." Isn't that wonderful news too? Sara's gallery is strictly for exhibition which is why there is no conflict with GFA. Oh, the things I'm learning about the art world.

There are some really cool galleries in town and Gali was accepted by three others, which out of courtesy I will keep nameless until the time is right. Just know they have excellent taste in art and I may be sharing a new artist's work with them soon which I'm sure they'll love just as much. Then I'll be talking them up too!

In the meantime let's just bask in the light of Gali's glow as a successful new emerging LA artist, shall we? Like I said about Esther, you think your friends are talented, but worry you're biased when they're your friends. That's why it's nice to have outside confirmation of what you believe in your heart to be true of their talent.

I knew when I visited Gali the first night we met to begin working together and a piece of her art made me cry because it was so stunning, I was looking at true talent. Now to go conquer the rest of the world with her art!

She's really great to work with because she comes up with great ideas and contacts which help make my job easier. Same with Audrey and her Back to College for A Day seminar series. However, they know I work hard with what and who I know, and how I do it too!:)

Audrey's a real go-getter too and I believe that all her hard work is going to pay off! I hope you will consider attending at least one lecture on Saturday, October 27, 2007 and enjoy the intellectual stimulation! I've heard keeping your brain moving helps fight off Alzheimer's which is a good thing.

Otherwise, on a personal front, I'm moving this weekend. Never in all my years of renting apartments have I EVER met such an apt nazi as the lady I met today. You would have thought I was trying to buy the building with all the documentation she requested. NEVER, EVER, EVER have I had a building manager request two years of tax returns, my bank deposits for the past year, proof of payment, $200 deposit etc, etc, you would have thought I had to give my firstborn son the way she was going at it.

Needless to say, I didn't end up applying there after all. I had jumped through some of the hoops, but give me a frickin' break lady. Some of this is none of your damn business. Six months records should be sufficient and if it's not, then I'm not meant to be there. Can you imagine what she would have been like as a landlord? Maybe she's had bad experiences with other beach rentals, but I've moved A LOT in my past and I've NEVER met someone like her.

I point blank asked her if the owner of the building would rather have the apartment sit empty for a month while she tried to find someone else who would give her all the data she was requesting to which she became indignant. I doubt anyone else has ever challenged her like I did, but I hate record keeping and it was a big pain in the tukis just to get together everything I got for her to begin with.

Oh well, I'm in a new Bible Study presented by Crown Financial  which was offered through King's Harbor Church  which will hopefully get that area of my business and life under control. Tonight was cool because Pastor Henry lead the group and I've never met him before. Very nice, caring man. Good people in the group too.

One of my friends from Bay Cities was so excited to hear I was taking this class because it so changed her life so many years back. Another friend of mine had taken it too and everyone speaks so highly of the way you learn and grow through doing it. I can't wait!

I had a pretty rough summer with my back injury and hardly working as a result, but God was faithful and provided for me. Now to get my life back on track in more ways than one. Speaking of churches, I'm singing this Sunday at the 9:30am and 11:00am service at Bay Cities Community Church's Lomita Campus located at  2043 Lomita Blvd, Lomita, CA 90717.

This is a rare Southern California appearance of me singing so you better get there early or the crowds will be overwhelming. JUST KIDDING! I don't think many people even know I sing to be honest. I haven't sung in a while, but I'm looking forward to it, albeit a little nervous. Would love to see your smiling faces in the audience if you feel so inspired to drive on down and check out the Lomita campus.

This particular church building has such a cool story (which to make sure is accurate you'll have to verify with Pastor Jim.) Apparently a few years back Jim was approached by a missions organization who saw his vision to reach the people of the South Bay and felt lead to donate their entire property of 3.5 acres including the buildings and everything to Bay Cities as a gift!

Can you imagine the value of that property and just receiving it as a gift? Well, they did! Apparently the church needed some work which men from the church helped rebuild. What a labor of love. Now it's so beautiful you feel like you're in a Beverly Hills home it's so pretty  - beautiful tile work, modern fixtures, gorgeous, spacious kitchen, and a great community space.

The grounds are beautiful too with lots of grass for children who attend the little school to play on. I was blown away as he was telling me the story. Now I have to be honest, my heart belongs to the Redondo Beach church because that's where my sister had her wedding reception. I have fond memories of that time. Plus, a lot of the friends I've made attend those services at the Redondo Beach location at the cute women's community center (located at 400 S. Broadway, Redondo Beach, CA 90277.) which we call church.

However, I've decided that it's important to be a servant and do what the pastor's wife asks of you when I'm not really singing that often. Plus, the beauty part is that now I'm able to sleep in a little longer because we have a later call time. God knew I'm going to be exhausted from moving (where is to be determined, but come hell or high water I plan to leave this current place on Sunday to keep my commitment to leave and allow the new renters to move in in a timely fashion.)

They're so eager to move here they had mail sent here already and also came by to measure the space earlier this week - back off babes! Now that I'm moving stuff into the living room to make it easier to move, my place seems spacious! My Dad was very sweet and came to help me break down a big piece of furniture to make it easier to transport today. I love my Dad. He's a good man. I have good neighbors too. Two have offered to help me move which is so kind.

I'm going to miss all my fun neighbors, but am hopeful they will still come to my parties and invite me to theirs, or at least say hi once in a while.  I had a good run here, but it's time to do something different to allow me to save money.

I'm beginning to hate to move. First for me. Normally I enjoy the excitement, but now... Enough! Apparently they did a study once of people who've traveled a lot as children and it's very common to move a lot, have multiple jobs and lots of variety in their lives. However now, maybe God is slowing me down or something.

So, all in all, a good day overall. I'm thrilled for Gali and the potential for her career. She's worked very hard for a very long time and deserves this acceptance. Better buy her art now because pretty soon you're not going to be able to afford it - mark my words!

And with that, good night.

Back to College for a Day, Harvest Home, my adoption story, A Window Between Worlds, Gali Rotstein

By Joy A. Kennelly

Yesterday was very serendipitous to say the least. I did more media relations for Back to College for A Day --which is coming along nicely, thank you for asking. The Washington Post reporter I pitched today found my press release very interesting, but was hoping for a more local angle.

I'm hoping she'll see this as a national trend and pick up the story regardless of the fact this educational program takes place on the West Coast. The courses offered in Audrey's program are perfect for that paper - politics, law, health, media.

I've hit a number of newspapers and online calendar listings which should help generate interest. We've also decided to allow people to sign up for individual seminars in case you can't stay for the entire day.

Here's the info again in case you've missed it taken from my posting on Experience LA:                                                                                                                                                                                    Back to College For A Day

Admission: Special introductory rate of $125 covers four lectures, lunch and parking. Individual seminars available at $40 each includes parking.

Services: Lunch is included in the program fee                                                                                                                                                                                                                                          Description: Back to College For A Day debuts Saturday, October 27, 2007 from 9:30am – 4:00pm at Mt. St. Mary’s College – Chalon campus located at 12001 Chalon Rd., Los Angeles, CA 90049.

Back To College For A Day features renowned speakers, compelling topics and like-minded people who share the joy of learning and want to enjoy a day of intellectual and social stimulation. Special introductory rate of $125 covers four lectures presented by well-respected professors from Pomona, UCLA, and Pitzer, lunch and parking. Individual seminars offered including parking for $40.00. Advance registration required.

What's really nice about working with Audrey is that she really respects my expertise and advice which is so refreshing. She gave me the biggest compliment today by telling me she found me highly ethical and honest which I take as a huge compliment because that is something I strive to be in all areas of my life.

It's gotten me in trouble sometimes because sometimes it would be easier to lie, but I just find I'd rather take the fall-out by being honest than worry what I've said that's incorrect down the road. It's just a simpler, nicer way to live.

Okay, enough self-congratulations. What else was I going to say before I run out to my meeting. Actually, I can say audition since I'm not working with any actors right now and have finished my other client work. I think it's fun to audition because it's outside my normal realm, it gets me out of my head, and it's fun to be using other sides of who I am.

I'm still a publicist first and foremost, but this is something I do because it brings me happiness. When it becomes work, then I'll probably quit. What's fun to realize is that a lot of billionaires have fun doing what they do too! Branson of Virgin Airlines builds businesses because it's fun and challenging for him.

I feel the same way when I begin to work with a new client. I love the challenge of breaking them in to the media, establishing their brand, and making their press releases newsworthy. I love seeing my clients develop confidence as they see the results of our efforts together. I also love to see them move up in their careers or aspirations because of my help and guidance. Lastly, I love working as a team to see goals turn into fruition. That brings me a lot of pleasure.

So, as I was saying, yesterday, did some media relations work, went to an appointment and then met a friend for lunch over at Rose Cafe in Venice. I haven't eaten there since 1999 or so and forgot how cute and cozy it is. The food is good too.

We caught up on what we've been doing in the year that we've seen each other and she's just glowing with happiness at having found her true path in life as a Theta Healer/Teacher. (Sorry if that's not accurate Moira, I'm in a rush and am not sure what your exact title is.) She's like a whole new person she's so happy! I'm happy for her too!

She's moving so offered to introduce me to her landlord and gave me the address. When we parted I thought I'd drive by to see the place and see my old neighborhood, but got lost and never did see it. Just as well, I ended up driving by a building that houses A Window Between Worlds. This non-profit teaches women and children in battered women's shelters art as a healing tool. They're all over country now which is great!

I had volunteered there while pregnant and just had to see if they were still around. When I rang the bell, it was indeed the same place and they welcomed me to join them even though they were all at lunch.

Walking up the stairs to the main office area brought back a wave of emotions. I had volunteered there 9 years ago. It was there that I surrendered to the decision that since I couldn't find a family I liked well enough to raise my son that maybe God wanted me to raise him myself. I would be a single parent.

It wasn't what I wanted at all to do, but felt I had to just resign myself to that fate. The epiphany came while I had been participating as a "model" for A Window Between World's TV news coverage they had arranged to showcase how the guided art programs are run and help women. All of sudden, during the demonstration I burst into tears and began sobbing.

It was like a huge dam had broken and all the sorrow, pain, and heartache of this entire pregnancy just came gushing forth. Cathy, the director, was very kind and gentle with me and lead me to a quiet place to journal my thoughts and feelings to gain composure. I don't know if they ever ran that news cast or not, but I was amazed at how the art lesson had been so healing to me personally.

As I journaled I just turned over all my pain and confusion about my son and just accepted that God's will might be for me to raise my son after all. At the time I didn't know I was having a boy, but I did know I wanted my child to grow up with all the benefits of a two-parent, stable household which I didn't feel I would be able to provide at that time.

Many women are single parents and I admire them. I just know for me, it wasn't a path I was ready or able to travel down. That day, after surrendering my will to God's will, I walked back to Harvest Home and there was a package waiting for me from the couple I would ultimately choose to adopt and raise my son.

All the women living in the maternity home with me were all involved in my search process by this time because I'd been looking for almost six months. When I opened the package, there was the soon-to-be adoptive couple's application, lots of pictures, and a video they had created to introduce themselves to me.

All the women clamored for me to watch it so we gathered in the living room and began to watch together. I think that day I wished I had more privacy because everyone kept telling me this couples the one, they're perfect for you. I didn't want to believe it. I was prepared now to raise my child and now the idea of adoption seemed real scary.

However, I knew this couple was the one when I spoke to them both on the phone and they answered all my list of questions. And as a journalism minor in college, I had a long list of questions. I asked to speak to references and spoke to them too. I spoke to the adoptive mom's family members.

I then called a very good friend at the time and asked her advice. She prayed with me and encouraged me to accept this as a reality. I knew it needed to be done, but it was hard now that it was so close to Eli being born.

I found this couple one month before Eli was born. It's a miracle that they passed the home inspection in such a short time. That's why when people are so amazed that celebrities seem to dash right through adoption issues, I know it can be done. The couple who adopted my son weren't wealthy, just good people who would be loving, honest, caring parents.

I think people who judge adoptive parent's suitability for this role can sense when the situation is right. God moves too! When I first began searching for adoptive parents, I sent letters out to all the adoptive agencies I knew around the country asking them for parents who would fit the criteria of what I was looking for.

When I had exhausted that route, I sent out letters to all my friends at various churches around the country asking them to refer good people to my attorney for consideration. It was through one of those letters that a couple attending my friend's church in Texas remembered Amy & Jeff, my adoptive couple, from a Bible Study they had attended with them years back.

They contacted Amy and told her about me. She called Jeff who was doing military duty in Florida and said, "How'd you like to adopt a child?" Now they were content with being childless, but there was always a part of them that had wanted a child. They knew that when the time was right, God would bring them a child.

There was nothing physically wrong with either of them, they just weren't able to conceive naturally. Rather than go through in vitro, they just waited on God. Jeff is a tall, handsome African-American man, and Amy is a petite, attractive blonde woman. I had had a vision of both of them (faceless, but their other physical characteristics very vivid in my head) when I was sending out letters around the country which I normally never have.

However, I do have very vivid dreams! This morning I dreamt that a very handsome, dark almost Italian looking man gave me the best bear hug ever when he saw me. It was hard to wake up after that dream!

Back to my story. Okay, so Amy and Jeff are contacted out of the blue to adopt a child they've never met and have never prepared for. That's what is so amazing to me! There were so many couples I read their profiles whose whole lives revolved around wanting children in their lives. Amy & Jeff were content either way which I really liked that about them.

I didn't want a couple who would idealize my child because that puts a lot of pressure on a child. I also wanted an inter-racial couple because I knew Eli would have an easier time of it if he didn't feel even more out of place in a family that really didn't look like him. What's so weird is that Eli looks so much like Amy and Jeff people never even think to ask if he's adopted which I think is great!

I really couldn't ask for better adoptive parents. They're secure in our relationship and their relationship with Eli. We get along really well. I love them and am so happy I found them. God is good!

That's why going back to Harvest Home this past weekend and seeing what my life was like only 9 years ago; then finding A Window Between Worlds again after all the time; driving down my old street and looking for places there was so mind-blowing. It's like God feels I'm ready to deal with all this emotion and can move beyond it now.

What was so interesting about visiting A Window Between Worlds yesterday is that the walls are covered with art and now I represent Gali Rotstein, a fine artist! Never in a million years would I ever have said my life would lead to art, but here I am.

I guess working with Gali is another way to heal because she appreciates and respects my work when some others haven't in the past. That is important to me with the people I choose to work with. I need to feel like they will ultimately become friends because I look at each relationship in a long-term fashion and I only like working with friends!

I've tried working for people who don't want to be friends and it's just too disheartening and defeating. I can't do it. My work is part of my life and my life is part of my work so it has to mesh. So, there you have it.

I need to run, but thanks for stopping by... More client news soon!

Breakthrough to Success Seminar with Chris Howard - AMAZING!

By Joy A. Kennelly

Don't have much time to write this because I'm eager to achieve some new goals, but wanted to let you all know that when Chris Howard's conference comes back in January you should definitely consider attending! It's mind blowingly (is that a word?) good!

I have read numerous books on Goal Setting and have lead numerous groups of women in achieving their goals over the years too. But this conference blew the lid off all the book reading and goal setting I've done. Hearing and seeing someone who has achieved such a high level of success, yet who is so grounded, full of integrity, has a great sense of fun, and is kind and respectful to all is very inspiring. I'm speaking of the founder and speaker, Chris Howard.

I'm not easily impressed, yet he is the most impressive person I've heard to date. I've accomplished a lot and know a lot, but have come to realize that I need different ways of communicating in a more humble way. You can never know everything and now that I'm back in my teachable mode I'm excited again!

It's easy to get complacent and not set new goals, but after attending this weekend's conference, I have so many new and exciting ones I can't contain myself. What I realized is that because my parents took us around the world when we were so young and we had so many life experiences during our imprint years that were amazing, ordinary life experiences that others accept just isn't acceptable to me. I figured out I've been to over 129 cities all over the world and that's not including all the cities I've traveled to in Europe or Africa yet!

I want to live a life that's huge and it's hard sometimes to find others who feel the same way. However, this weekend I met many people who have achieved a lot and still want more which was just what I needed. Plus, just listening to Chris and knowing he's achieved so much is inspiring! When you're at the top of your game and you meet kindred spirits it's very gratifying.

My goal is to attend Chris Howard's March 1-8, 2007 Billionaire Bootcamp in Maui. I gained so much from this Breakthrough to Success conference over this past weekend, I can only imagine what I'll gain from an entire week of this type personal development. Plus, I love Maui!

Chris uses hypnosis, NLP, goal setting teaching, story telling, games, music and other things to help you break through the issues (limiting beliefs and negative emotions) that have been holding you back in life. What might take psychologists months or years to achieve, he is able to get to the root of the issue immediately and deal with it.

It's so healing and freeing it's hard to explain. What's so cool is that you're doing it with a room filled with hundreds of people all experiencing the same breakthroughs and everyone is so open and supportive. I just loved it! I haven't been hugged that often and so frequently ever. It was wonderful on so many levels. Plus, the massages are awesome too! (You'll have to come to see what I'm talking about.)

This has opened my eyes to a whole new way to approach my personal relationships, my professional aspirations, and my personal goals. And I had fun doing it! You can't ask for more can you? Hopefully you'll see evidence of this in future blogs because I'm setting things in motion now that will help everyone I'm working with already and those I'm about to start working with too.

I can't wait! I loved it so much I signed up to be a crew member for the next one because I want my friends to come and feel comfortable that I'm there, but I want to help more people than just my friends too. Plus, you get so much more out of it when you're not worried about what your friends think, or how they're leading you through something I think. Just my opinion because this year was so much more intense since I went alone.

Had a ball and met some great people. What was really cool was bumping into the cute photographer Maria from the Age of Love show and getting to hear her thoughts on the behind-the-scenes gossip (and girls, you know there was!) She's even prettier in person and very nice and fun.

Who knows? We may even begin working together on some stuff. Stranger things have happened! Got to stay open! I do love helping people achieve goals and can't wait to learn more at some of Chris' other classes. I forgot how much I love goal setting until hearing him speak. It's time to make that dream of mine a reality.

Remember my Goal Gals Group? For those of you who haven't been reading long I used to lead groups of women to empower and teach them how to set goals. It was really fun to see how much people achieved when they set their mind to it. However, I became burnt out because the groups got too large and it wasn't fun any more. Since then I've lead smaller ones and am much happier.

One of the women in my last group just achieved her goal of becoming a Pilates Instructor and that's huge for her! Mine was to move into a nice apartment and I've done that. Now to move into my condo. :) My client's current goal is to get into a great gallery space which we're very close to see happening. I'll keep you posted. Good things brewing...

I would tell you more about Chris Howard's seminar, but you really must experience it for yourself to get the full impact on your life. I HIGHLY recommend the January conference, especially since January is a great month to set new goals anyway. You'll be happy you did!

That's all. Gotta run. Take care and happy goal setting!

Chris Howard is awesome! As usual

By Joy A. Kennelly

Extremely tired right now, but just wanted to share that Chris Howard's Breakthrough to Success conference is just as good as last year if not better. I am going to be busting through some self limiting beliefs and transforming my life over this weekend so watch out world!

Hope you're have a self-aware, evolved, inspiring day too.

Sleep well. I'm crashing - got to be back by 9am again till 11pm tomorrow! Oy vey!

9 Things You Simply Must Do to Succeed in Love and Life and other thoughts...

By Joy A. Kennelly

Sometimes you just need a good friend to tell it like it is and remind you that God is in control, not you. I keep saying I'm turning my life over to His will and His leading in my life, but deep down inside I keep thinking that means I'll still get to play in Hollywood with all my friends I've known for years and years.

Not so. I was reminded tonight by my good friend that when one door closes, another opens. Right now it seems like God is closing the door for me to do more personal publicity for actors and it's very sad to me. I LOVE that kind of work. I love helping people brand themselves and create business and opportunities from that identity.

I LOVE IT! It makes me very happy and I think I'm good at it. Others do too, but they can't afford my services (at least the ones I'm meeting. Maybe I need to meet more better ones. Ya think?)

For whatever reason though, it's just not happening right now and I have to accept that fact as a fact and stop living in denial. Maybe I'll go back to doing it down the road, but for now... Not happening. I'm beginning to realize I don't really know what God wants for my life anymore.

That's why my friend telling me she knows I have a gift for publicity and that maybe God wants to use my talents in representing the South Bay is a little overwhelming, but also encouraging. Maybe this is the right direction to take.

I have to admit though. When I think about living AND working down here I feel like I'm going to be bored out of my skull! What is going on at night other than bars and happy hours? Will someone please tell me? Lots of stuff to do on the weekends and during the day, but nights? WHAT IS THERE TO DO - ESPECIALLY IF YOU'RE SINGLE???

Maybe I need to start planning some parties and get some events going or something. I don't know, but I do know that if I am going to stay down here I need to entertain myself. I can't deal with the thought that the highlight of my night is going to be meeting a friend of mine down at Barnes & Nobles and seeing what the latest mags are. I'll shrivel up and die! Not that there's anything wrong with it, but not all the time!

No wonder people drink so much down here. LOL. They're bored! I'm bored! Oh well. I need to stop ragging on my little home town and start doing something to make it more fun. I'm sure there's other people like me who would love to do stuff at night too.

I can only hit Java Man so often too. Love that place, but have to say, the customer service with some of the guys working there has gotten kind of bad. I don't know why. I'm not tipping any different than I have in the past. I am ordering the same stuff. I don't know. Just an fyi, mr. owner guy. Especially the Sunday closing crew. What's up their butt?

I was so bored I threw an impromptu night BBQ on Tuesday and all nine people I invited showed up. That was with two hours notice. I think they're bored too. This community needs something pulling the singles and those without children of the town together outside of bars. Just a thought.

I'm tired. Just felt like blogging. It's been awhile because I've been busy and other stuff taking up my time, but I miss sharing. Maybe it's a little too personal, but I always hope that perhaps other people will relate to what I've written and will be comforted or encouraged to know they're not alone feeling the way they do.

One of the things the former shrink from the Women of Faith conference I attended last weekend said is, "When we reveal, then we heal." (This was a very fun conference, but kind of Christian lite so you had to be there which is why I'm not covering it. Check out the link for more details. It's good, just not what I expected. Laughed a lot though!)

Back to my original thought - "When we reveal, we heal." I know, trite phrase, but it was also echoed in this book I bought that weekend by Christian clinical psychologist, Dr. Henry Cloud, entitled 9 Things You Simply Must Do to Succeed in Love and Life.

I kept trying to read bits and pieces of the book over the breaks because it had such an intriguing title and he's such a great author on numerous topics. I almost didn't get it because I still have a gift card from the women's retreat I attended and was going to get it later, but then I read his counseling of an overweight patient about how to effectively lose weight - one pound at a time, one week at a time (more details in the book - read it! It's really great. This is my 2nd time reading it now.) which was a concept I hadn't really grasped because I'm the "I want it now and if I can't have it right now why bother" type person.

However, that idea really resonated with me and since reading the book I've joined a gym again. Time to hit the ground running so to speak. Maybe I'll eat more salads now too. Maybe Weight Watchers is next? Who knows? :)

Back to the book though, I digress. What Dr. Cloud explains is that there are 9 certain traits and characteristics of successful people that he was able to analyze after meeting so many "de ja vu" people.
He calls them that because he kept meeting people who reminded him of other people and he thought maybe he'd met them before because there were so many similarities, but then he realized these people all addressed life in the same successful  way. That's the genesis of the book. I highly, highly recommend it. It's easy to read, lots of examples with real people not celebrities which would make you think you can't attain that life, and very informative.

There's a little study guide that goes along with it and if you bought the two together at the conference I was attending you got a discount - I bought both.:) Now I'm starting to read the daily step by step guide to changing your life in 30 days. It's very scriptural so if that's not your thing don't bother. But if you are interested in hearing God's perspective on you and your dreams, then get it. I'm enjoying reading it too.

Speaking of goal setting... A few of my friends and I are going to start the Goal Gals back up again real soon. (It's something I created back in the mid-90's which my friend Cynthia named when she was part of it where I get groups of people together to accomplish goals in three month increments.)

I'm excited about starting again because I always get so much support in groups like this and accomplish so much more than I would by myself. It's a good time to start too because pretty soon I'm going to be very busy again. I'm very excited that my producer/writer/mentor friend, Marcia, is going to help me create my adoption doc because I'm just way too close to be objective. Should be interesting...at least I hope!

I'm also looking forward to taking Chris Howard's seminar again next weekend. He takes everything that's taught on goal setting and just kicks it up to a whole other level. I was so inspired last time I attended can't wait to attend this one. I think you can still sign up for free. Check it out. If you're a conference attender like I am!:)

I'm still loving working with my artist client, Gali Rotstein. She's creating some really cool new art pieces and is busy in the studio. I'm busy pitching her to more and more galleries. We have some pending, but until things are confirmed I can't really discuss them here. Just know as soon as we know, you will know. There's also a very cool women's magazine (one of my favorites actually) interested in her story too and if I get her that hit, it will be major! Say a prayer!:)

Otherwise, wrapped the car gig last week (although they're not done, but I was - HA HA) and have been busy catching up on things this week as a result. I don't know how people work 9am - 5pm. I really don't. It's so machine like. But the money's nice I guess. However, according to my Henry Cloud book, it's more important to do something that makes your heart sing.

So, I'm off to read more and learn what's going to make my heart sing! Have a good one all.

Don't be a stranger.

Enjoy the read.

By Joy A. Kennelly

I've been rather busy and haven't had the time to blog in the way I usually do. Not sure I have the time now, but wanted to check in.

Things are going well for Gali. We're just waiting confirmation on a few items which I'll share as soon as they're finalized. In the meantime she's busy creating more art. Did I tell you that some of her collectors include these people? Political Entertainment Consultant, Andy Spahn; Executive Director, Children's Action Network, Jennifer Perry; Partner, The Gersh Agency, Richard Arlook; Head of TV Talent, Paradigm Agency, Alisa Adler; Actor Harris Yulin; Actor Jeffrey Jones; and an Actress (who shall remain nameless, but if you ask, I might be persuaded to tell you.)

Kind of impressive list wouldn't you say? More to come!

We're finalizing details on the car project I've been working on with my friend/colleague Alexandra, and hopefully will wrap things up soon. It's coming together which is exciting to see it unfold. Very interesting project.

Bag the Elephant and other thoughts

I just finished reading Bag the Elephant How to Win & Keep BIG Customers by Steve Kaplan, The Difference Maker Inc. and it’s inspired me to share my thoughts.

I’m taking this particular blog in a more “business-like” direction, but I’m still me and want to continue telling stories as I do. As a result, I thought I’d tell you about a recent conversation I had with someone who’s interested in hiring me for public relations.

He wanted to know my process in creating a publicity campaign for clients.  I realized that although each client has been unique in the way we’ve worked together there are some basic steps I always take with all the numerous clients I’ve helped over the years.

First, I like to ask my client what they want to achieve through working with me. Is it fame? If they have fame do they need to change their current image? Is it recognition? Is it more customers or clients? A new agent or manager? Completion of a project too much for them to handle internally? Whatever the client is interested in as their goal, then that’s what we work towards.

Many years ago my Dad gave me a book called, If You Don’t Know Where You’re Going, You’ll Probably End Up Somewhere Else by David Campbell. I believe that book has been the biggest influencer besides the Bible in the way I handle my life. Another goal book I read (whose name escapes me) says that the books you read today will be how you are in five years. Interesting concept, eh?

I’m very goal-oriented, and find I tend to achieve my personal goals better when I’m supported by friends in a group setting rather than pursuing them on my own. That’s why I’m notorious for starting groups of friends to do things. I’ve run writing groups, 12-step groups, goal setting groups, Bible Study groups, (never weight loss groups – ha!), event groups, networking groups, blog groups, you name it, I’ve organized and run it.

I think group efforts work well for my clients too. They may know what they want to achieve, they may know how to achieve it, but sometimes they just need a cheerleader to cheer them on and give guidance from the sidelines since they already know what they need to do.

I act as a coach and point out areas they might not have considered on their journey since they’re too close to what they’re passionate about. I help them step back and see the forest for the trees. I also give them the publicity tools to create a stronger presence in the marketplace.

Sometimes other clients know their ultimate goal, but can’t figure out the steps to achieve it. That’s where I step in and become the team captain. I’m really good at analyzing a problem or a goal, figuring out what needs to be done to set the foundation and then figuring out how to move towards it quickly and easily. I give and create the cues and then we move forward as a team.

Being an artist of any kind, whether you’re an athlete with natural giftedness for a particular sport like volleyball, or a writer whose prose captures the heart and soul of anyone who reads your work, or a chef who creates out of this world meals seemingly out of thin air, or a designer whose clothing designs turn all women into glorious females who revel in their own enhanced beauty, or a preacher who shares from the Bible in such a way that those who hear it are convicted and want to be more Jesus-like, or a producer who knows just the right thing to say to everyone on their staff so they turn out their best work on time and under budget, the list could go on and on, it all comes down to believing that you have a gift. Sharing it is an imperative because it’s part of who you are and you must or you’ll die or not be you. Even if it means sharing it with only one other person.

That’s why clients work with me. I understand their artistry and then use my own giftedness to create new ways for them to express themselves on a larger scale. That’s what I do in a nutshell. Take someone’s gifts and share it with the world. It can be a company, a project, a person, a city, or a product -- I see what the client coming to me is all about and then think of creative ways to share their vision with the rest of the world.

Now what I find interesting is when people have a vision for themselves, but allow fear of what other people think of their promoting themselves, or thinking more highly of themselves than perhaps they’ve allowed themselves thus far to hinder them from achieving what God has in store for their lives. That fear drowns out the desire to be something bigger, do something greater, or live something more magnificent than they ever dreamed possible.

They sink to the level of the people they currently drink with, or hang out with, or shop with, or whatever with simply because to step into another life means change and who knows what that will bring? That is so sad to me. I can’t work with people like that. There’s nothing for me to help when someone is in that head space.

They might know there’s something special about them, but because they feel other people have had the courage to step forward and be all they’re meant to be these small-minded people feel there’s not enough space in the universe for them to achieve and be happy too. They’re so wrong.

Recently I had a conversation with a young athlete who seems to have a lot of promise in his career. The local papers write up his achievements and people in his circle seem to respect him. However, bottom line is I doubt this guy is really living up to his potential as God has seen for him when his greatest pleasure in life is to push paperwork at his day job, work with kids, and then go out with his buddies at night and get drunk. That’s so sad to me.

Apparently he’s from an inner city upbringing and probably set his goals on achieving athletic stardom which he feels he’s achieved to a certain extent. However, there’s so much more that could be done with his level of fame. There are so many inner city kids he could inspire and others too simply by virtue of telling his story.

The media and product endorsement companies would eat up his story if he had new goals and was working on achieving them too, but to be content with going out with your buddies and get drunk as a goal or image? Not so much. Maybe he needs a new coach.

If you don’t set new goals when you’ve reached the ones you were climbing towards for so long, then you’re bound to plateau and not in a good way. Athletes are goal oriented, as are sales people. However, I believe we all should be.

What was interesting about Steve Kaplan’s book was that he never encouraged you to rest on your laurels once you landed the big client (elephants as he calls them) you’ve always dreamed about. You should always consider other similar elephants and continue to expand your horizons so you’re not dependent on one type of business.

That’s why I like variety in the clients I work with. Yes, there’s a common thread, but for the most part I like to be mentally and professionally challenged when I take on new business. I love thinking outside of the box and trying to reach a new audience, or achieve different goals for clients.

When I was asked by a client to collect all the summer getaway packages from over 50 hotels in the Los Angeles area, I created a “newsletter” which explained who had hired me, what I needed, and how to respond to my request. Then I sent it out to everyone I was asked to target. I had never done an assignment like this before and wasn’t sure how much people in the hotel industry read, but thought I’d give it a try anyway.

I also wasn’t sure what type of response rate I’d receive because many of these hotels were busy, we were entering the busy summer season and they didn’t have anything at stake.

It worked a little bit, and then I realized I needed to make phone calla and follow up with more emails. Many had received my initial email newsletter and were interested, but became even more interested when they put a voice to the request because this business is very social.

I was delighted when I had almost all of them respond in some fashion – either yes, we’d love to participate; maybe, if there’s no fee; no, we’re not interested in offering summer getaway packages or no, we don’t need the extra business. I turned the project around a lot quicker because if they had any questions I just sent out my newsletter which was very detailed and answered everything all at once.

Now I don’t know how others might have handled this project, but I established myself as someone who worked well on deadline, was creative, was a strong writer, and was determined to achieve the goal of my client faster and better than they had managed to do in-house. I can’t control what they did with the material I collected for them, but I do know I achieved their goal of collecting this information in a timely fashion successfully.

I also established nice relationships with certain hoteliers who I can now go back to for other cross-promotions I want to create and they know me now. In my business, it’s all in the relationships you’ve built and maintained over the years. I have friends in business I've known for over 15 years who if I called them would be happy to help if I needed them to and they were able. The integrity of your word and business dealings is critical. If you don’t have integrity your reputation goes out the window.

I believe that if you do what you say you will do, do it well and on time, then you’ll have repeat customers who will come back even when I turn them away. And yes, I’ve done that. And yes, it’s happened.

So, enough pontificating. I hope you check out that book Bag the Elephant. It was very interesting and useful for what I’m looking to accomplish. Maybe you’ll find you can benefit too! That’s all.

Take care and have a great day. I plan to.

My Letter to the Editor was published in The Easy Reader this week!

FYI, this was originally one of my blogs in July and I decided to submit it to the papers to share my view on what's going on in the South Bay. This was printed this week in the Easy Reader and another shorter letter I wrote was published last week in the Beach Reporter.

I think the Easy Reader editors made it even better and I'm proud to have my name attached to this. Now hopefully more people will read this and realize it's time for a change.

Thanks for reading. Have a great weekend. Now here's my letter....

I haven't written something like this in a while, but I woke up and feel compelled to share this viewpoint in hopes maybe people will read it down here, see themselves and think maybe, just maybe we need to change... I'm referring to Manhattan Beach and those who live here. In fact all of the South Bay and especially Hermosa Beach. It deeply saddens me that when I invited a girlfriend to come down here to join me and some of my new friends for dinner one of the first things she shared with me was a girlfriend of hers who'd gone out down here five years ago was drugged and then raped in a parking lot of a bar.

Then, over lunch with my mom yesterday, when I told her I'm starting to socialize in Manhattan Beach, she said, “Well you know what they call that city don't you. Drunken Manhattan Beach.” That is so sad to me. Since when has alcohol become such a dominating force in a sleepy bedroom community that two separate people have such a bad impression of this beautiful seaside area? I grew up down here. I attended the local elementary schools, finished four years of high school and then after I left for college, not returning until now.

I don't want to come off as holier than thou or whatever because I'm not. I enjoy my mojito as much as the next person, but I want to ask those living in the South Bay to stop and think for a moment if the legacy we want to leave to generations to come is bigger than the fact this is a party town where the big focus is getting drunk.

I was surprised to learn an acquaintance mention that her daughter was turning 14 and she knew she'd have to provide alcohol at her birthday party, but she was concerned about how much to offer. Since when does serving alcohol to minors constitute a good party?

Are we going to continue to be a community that turns a blind eye and condones alcoholism for under-age children? Are we going to continue to teach our children that this is how we live - drinking all the time? Are the police going to continue to turn a blind eye to the rampant open containers on the beach during events like the 6-person volleyball tournament and events on major holidays?

It sickens me that everything else we do down here - the wonderful free outdoor summer concerts available in all the South Bay cities, the amazing fireworks displays available during the 4th of July, the creative, entrepreneurial minds and businesses that come out of here are completely overshadowed by alcohol and partying.

Maybe our International Surf Festival deserves national and international attention for the quality of our lifeguards. Maybe our art scene deserves national and international attention for the diverse, unique, art festivals. Maybe the wonderful sports associations that host numerous city-wide sports like volleyball, softball, and soccer should receive more attention.

Maybe the creative recreation department that offers such a wide variety of inexpensive activities for the community deserves attention. Maybe our multiple adult schools that are so inexpensive, yet so popular and offer such a wide array of classes, deserves attention. Or the classy Manhattan Open Tennis Tournament or the interesting accomplished people who live down here like our local newscaster, professional athletes or CEO's, or our many volunteers. What about our education system, our shopping, and of course our beautiful beaches and piers?

As a publicist interested in the image and reputation of where I grew up I don't want my hometown to be casually dismissed by guests I’ve invited to visit as, “Oh, that city? That's where you go to get drunk. You have to go visit there at least once to see the party scene and get wasted. “

I want the South Bay to be known for something other than alcohol and if it means hitting up the chambers to do publicity for them, then that's what I'll do. If it means starting a coalition of businesses, organizations, citizens, government officials, police and others interested in making a change, then I will. I’m mad as hell and I’m not going to take it anymore!

I pray my words bear fruit and sober up those of you who are using alcohol as the grease to promote your businesses, or score women (or men), or to avoid reality, or pain. Please stop. I know it's a disease, but let's not perpetuate it to future generations.

It’s time we as a community take back our beaches and our nightlife and create an environment where all are respected and protected. I’m sick of public drunkenness as a common occurrence. It’s time for a change!

We can make a difference in our community-- one activity, one business event, one story at a time.

Manhattan Beach

LA Inc, South Bay, Ralphs Grocery Store, Pavilions and the proposed Business tax hike

By Joy A. Kennelly

My stomach's upset from something I ate last night and I can't sleep so here I am. It's pretty bad when you get sick on the food you cook yourself! LOL It doesn't always happen, but sometimes it does. I think I need to learn how long you can keep uncooked meat in the fridge before it goes bad. Any chefs care to leave a comment?

Hopefully my girlfriends who came over last night aren't facing queasy stomachs too. I'm so bad. Oh well. Live and learn right? It could have been the rich chocolate cake I ate with whipped cream that Kirsten, my girlfriend, brought over too so I'll try to comfort myself with that thought. Or maybe the Martinelli's that Deborah brought over - that always affects my digestion for some odd reason too. Oy Vey!

In any case, just wanted to check in and say hi. I'm so thrilled that linking to that little address listing of Bay Cities Community Church has brought their real Web site to the forefront of Google!!! Now if any of you are interested in learning more about what my church is all about, or where it's located, check out the link ok? Would love to have you join me sometime. Seriously!

Jim Mackinga and his wife Sandy are the most loving, special people. Their whole family is really wonderful actually. Everyone I've met at this church is so friendly, open-minded and great. I just love being part of this community. Say hi to me, since I'd love to meet you as I don't know too many other people down here yet though. Who knows, if you walk through the door, maybe you'll see people you know already!

Did I tell you all that I had a meeting with the Director of Media Relations, Robin,  from LA Inc aka Los Angeles Convention & Visitors Bureau to discuss future work together? We're in the negotiating stages so we'll see, but I'm hopeful this will work out well since they've always appreciated my work to date. It's all a blur on what I've shared here and what I haven't. Excuse me if I'm repeating myself.

I've been writing for LA Inc since 2002 and it's really helped me learn how to present the city of Los Angeles as a whole to the travel media. I've written copy for their Web site, pitched media for special events, and written numerous press releases highlighting all aspects of the city. I love it since it keeps me in the loop for the entire city and I enjoy doing the work. Plus, I'm good at it, if I do say so myself.:)

I'm planning to develop the travel aspect of my business as it applies to the South Bay since I have this experience, knowledge and connections gained from my relationship with LA Inc. Why not? Should be good.

Being away form the South Bay for so long I see it through a tourist's eyes right now. Sometimes that's good. Sometimes that bad. However, there's always room to grow in either direction so I'm excited to see where this new experience will take me and my hometown as a whole.

My Beach Writer group is excited about participating in my new endeavor which will be great because they're all very accomplished writers too. More to be revealed, but just know it's going to be good once it gets going.

I had a great meeting with Gary, my ad/marketing bud, yesterday too and we made some real progress on the concept. I'm excited to see where this all takes us since it has such great potential for positive outcomes for many people and businesses and the community as a whole. God is moving!

Just think - my public relations, Gary's design, and my Beach writers writing -- the skies the limit! I've been very fortunate to create a group of quality professionals (see my links to people I do business with  on the left of this column - those are my colleagues) who support my business in a variety of  ways which is great when I'm working with bigger clients. Now to get some interns to work with me and I'm all set.

So, for those of you still trying to decide what to do tomorrow (or should I say today since it's 4:30am in the morning Sunday - oy vey - someone give me a tranquilizer or pump my stomach...:) Ok, where was I? Oh yeah, what to do on Sunday after you've gone to church? Here's a few blurbs from the Easy Reader on a couple of fun events that only happen in the South Bay and I quote:

"Surfers Walk of Fame inductions
Eight surfing figures will be inducted into the Surfers Walk of Fame today at 4 p.m. Sunday at the base of the city pier. Inducted at the fifth annual Surfers Walk ceremony will be honorary members John “Whitney” Guild, Alf Lewis, Mike Stevenson and Donald Takayama, and pioneer members Toby Erlinger, Bev Morgan, Patrick O’Connor and Rosemarie Reimers-Rice."

The induction sounds cute and since you're down here, why don't you go to dinner, enjoy yourself and then hurry over to the beach to claim your "seat" for the huge summer Sunset Concert that happens at 6pm? Here's more details, again from the Easy Reader:

"It’s The Shondells, dude!
Hermosa Beach’s second Sunset Concert of the summer offers up the near-edible “Crimson and Clover” and “Sweet Cherry Wine” Tommy James & The Shondells. 6 p.m. on the sand, just south of the pier, and best get there early. 310-318-0280."

Now I'm not really into oldies music, but I am curious to see who is so I'll pop by for a bit. I just have this real curiosity about the people and the customs down here since some of it is new to me. I like to see what demographic these kinds of events appeal to too because then it helps me with my marketing.

If you know who you're trying to reach and what they like, then you have a better time of appealing to them. Just a little PR tip. Duh, right? But so many people just blindly create things without understanding the market and they fail as a result. That's why I'm trying to take as many meetings with influential people of the South Bay as possible so I understand where people's heads are at. We'll see.

I'm excited, more good meetings to happen soon. I'll keep you posted once there's a little more concrete plans in place. Hope you'll join me. I look forward to getting to know my South Bay neighbors better.

Ok, now that I've blogged, maybe I can go back to sleep. Have a good morning. Maybe I'll see you at the Pier events today! Just think, maybe an older, more mature, non-drunk population shows up for these events changing the demographic of the Hermosa Beach pier for once - what a novel concept, eh?

Would be nice to walk around there and not have to avoid the barf left staining the concrete from some stupid person the night before. ICKY! Since when is our Hermosa Beach Pier the place for 20 year olds to come and get wasted? Time to grow up people!

Go to Alcoholics Anonymous, go to Rehab, go to church, go somewhere, but get your drinking under control if you're barfing in public and ruining a public place for others. YUCK. That's what I'm talking about people. The first step is accepting the fact you have a problem. If you need me to be the one to make you stop and look at yourself, then so be it.

I just hope you don't kill someone first driving home drunk before you wake up and smell the coffee. Yes Devin, everyone is responsible for their own drinking, but when it begins to affect the public and create the possibility for drunk driving, then that person's responsibility has obviously gone out the window and it's time someone speaks up. Plus, who wants to date or be married to an alcoholic? I feel like I'm doing an intervention for my city! Okay, enough of my soapbox. I need an Al Anon meeting.

I'll leave you with this cute story since it's so South Bay to me. Remember that very sweet slow boy I told you about who works at Ralphs? Well, last night I popped in for some things I needed for my dinner with the girls and he was in my check-out line.

As I was standing there waiting for the cashier to ring up the guy in front of me, all of sudden, quite loudly, I hear him say to me, "YOU LOOK BEAUTIFUL IN PINK TONIGHT." I was really embarrassed since he said it so loudly that people were turning to me and smiling, but I thought he was so cute and sincere I responded thank you and pretended like that happens to me all the time.

Then he tells me loudly again that his birthday is December 1 and do I know how quickly 8 months goes? VERY QUICKLY, very quickly. I agreed with him and made a mental note that I want to give him a birthday card on his birthday since it obviously means a great deal to him. He seemed content that I'd acknowledged him and was nice to him and didn't speak much until he wished me a great evening as he passed me my bags.

If you ever get a chance to visit the Ralphs down on Sepulveda just up from Pier Avenue, do. I think that guy is the sweetest person he makes me shop there because I enjoy my visits so much since he's so innocent and pure in all his communications.

I remember reading in some mag about another similar slow guy at another grocery store who was challenged by his store manager to make a difference as part of a store-wide initiative to bring in new business. This directive was given to the entire store, but this little guy took it to heart.

He began writing little positive sayings on slips of paper and putting each slip into people's grocery bags as he bagged their groceries. Pretty soon people began to stand in his line to receive the sayings they were so popular. He totally changed the m.o. of people visiting that store and business flourished ten-fold as a result of his small action. They began talking to each other in line and were happier.

That's how my little Ralphs guy makes me feel when I shop there. He's always courteous, interested in how I'm doing, and obviously cares about doing a good job. I think it's great that Roger Bacon of Ralphs has hired him. I hope he keeps him around for a long time. I hope that business flourishes just like that store with the other slow guy does.

Maybe Roger should implement the sayings too? Just think, maybe then he could afford the raise in business taxes that's being proposed - LOL. Does anyone else find that funny that he's so vocal about the measure? I could see some of the smaller stores in town being upset, but a major grocery store - give me a break!

Yes, it's a bummer to have to pay more taxes, but since when does $168 a year really pay for how much business you generate Roger? Where's your sense of civic duty?  Santa Monica charges small business owners twice that amount! Why shouldn't we bring our taxes current?

Going back to my original point of customer service being key, who knows what a different community this might be if that little effort to personalize your store's service was made? I don't know. Not saying it has to be done, but hey, if it worked at another similar store, then why not give it a try? You never know.

I do know that one of the main reasons I like shopping at the Pavilions down the street even though their prices are higher is because every single time I've ever asked for help finding something, the person working there who I've asked has personally walked me over to the section for my item and told me to have a nice day. That type of customer service is unheard of up in Hollywood. I love it!

It's nice to live in a community where you see familiar faces, people are sincere in their greetings to you when they see you, and there's a real sense of community tangible in the air. It's hard to describe to people who don't live here, but trust me, it's here. That's why I moved back and that's why I enjoy it.

On another note... I'm sure there's plenty of bars that have a lot at stake in this measure to increase the business tax too. Wouldn't it be nice if they actually gave back to the community rather than just take? Just a thought from an objective public relations specialist viewpoint.

What a great publicity angle to say, "Yes, we're making a shitload of money (excuse my French as my friends always say) from this city and as a result, we've decided to do the right thing and give back to the community by being willing to pay more taxes since we obviously use a lot more of the cities resources in police, trash, and other business." What a great story that would be to the greater Los Angeles area!

I can see it now - the Los Angeles Business Journal, The LA Times, CNBC and other news outlets picking up this story. Very interesting thought, eh? Maybe they'll read my blog and find it interesting that a city that has had the same business tax for years and years is having such great difficulty even putting a measure on the ballot for the general public to vote on. What are they afraid of?

I doubt the Beach Reporter finds it a story though seeing as part of the service the Manhattan Beach Chamber offers is an article in that paper for membership. Kind makes it difficult to keep your editorial perspective clean when your advertising revenue is generated by so many of the businesses you're writing about right? So many small papers will offer you a story if you buy an ad (not saying The Beach Reporter does it though) and I find that practice despicable from a journalist standpoint.

If someone has to buy their way into a paper to have a story written what does that say about the integrity of the story? It happens all the time with small papers though. The ad department begins to control the editorial which makes the balanced ethical reporting of an issue go out the window.

That's why when people want to pay me as a PR person strictly based on whether or not I can guarantee they'll get media coverage I refuse. If the media is doing their job, then they won't be bought and I won't influence them to write a story about my client unless there's a real news story there. That's why I'm real particular about who I work with and very selective on when I send out press releases.

If I can't help you or I don't think you're newsworthy, I won't take your money. I just turned away a short filmmaker the other day who was just oozing money because I didn't think his film would get picked up as news until he got it into a festival. Now him as a filmmaker, he was very interesting and I could see him personally getting coverage now, but a short film- not so much. I used to produce film festivals for years and know this world quite well.

Plus, I bounce things off my other colleague, Marcia, who also has done lots of film publicity and she agreed with me. We always collaborate. Same with my friends Kim Koury and Adrienne Dorsey. Great people to collaborate with.

I have found it interesting that every press release I've ever sent The Beach Reporter which has been picked up by other news sources numerous times, hasn't been picked up by that paper. Makes me wonder if my letter to the editor will see the light of day since I'm not a chamber member, nor have I bought an ad to promote my services since that would defeat what my business is all about! Maybe since my letterhead has my Santa Monica mailing address there's a bias in that regards too? Who knows...LOL

Ok, back to the proposed Hermosa Beach Business Tax Increase issue at hand.

What's up with the "private" meeting on July 31? I don't get it.  Makes you wonder what the city council is thinking doesn't it? What's going on behind those closed doors? Aren't they supposed to be the ones who help the city to take care of itself? Why wouldn't this measure not be a no-brainer - raising the current tax of $168/year to something that's commensurate with your business revenue?

I'm confused and just asking that's all. I'm not into politics, but thought that's why people put these people in office-- to make the city a better place to live, not keep things status quo. Think of the money that would bring in the city! Pretty amazing things could be done then.

That's one of the things that drive me crazy about the South Bay (small town politics!), but there's a lot of good things down here too which I'd rather focus on and move forward with. Stay tuned.  But don't worry. I'm not running for office any time soon. Have you ever watched the city council meetings on TV? BORING!!!!!! It's like watching paint dry. However, the city characters do liven it up a bit when they speak their piece.

So, now I really better try to go back to sleep because I want to hit the 9:30am service of Bay Cities and get chuched. And no, I didn't misspell that word - that's a spillover from my days at my gospel church.

See ya!

Very honored - NAMAS acceptance!

By Joy A. Kennelly

Just received an email this morning which states,"We are pleased to welcome you as an inaugural member of the National Academy of Media Arts & Sciences (NAMAS).  NAMAS is a peer group of prominent executives, technologists, and creative people working in all forms of digital media including television, internet, newspapers, and magazines, as well as technology, advertising, and production companies.  It is our mission to stimulate dialogue and exchange of ideas among the burgeoning number of professionals and students active in the new media realm."

Isn't that cool? I'm very honored and feel my technology background is validated now. Nice to see they're allowing women - just kidding.:)

I'll share more later, but this is all for now...

Hope you're enjoying the absolutely gorgeous CA weather!

AICP Awards Show, X Bar, The Liquid Muse and the Independent Television Festival,

By Joy A. Kennelly

Just returned from attending the Association of Independent Commercial Producers Awards Show tonight over at the LACMA with an actress friend. I like working the door of the show because then the rest of the night we can mix and mingle and enjoy.

Here's a link to the show in case you're curious to see which commercials won. I love this this stuff because I love cutting edge creativity which I believe the advertising industry creates over and over again. What was interesting was to discuss the state of this business since it's turned upside down right now. I never realized how many advertising events I go to till tonight.

Even though I'm in public relations, I appreciate good advertising. The ability to tell a story in 60 seconds is brilliant. That's why I think there's many talented commercial directors who move into creating amazing features as a result. I don't think it ever works the other way around though.:)

Here's a few of my favorites from tonight - watch them and you'll see why (They're all good, but these stood out the most to me.)

1. Vaseline "Sea of Skin" by Smuggler's Director Ivan Zacharis - brilliant talent - check out his reel on their site. This commercial is so artistic and all nude so it was only shown in Europe. It may offend some of you, but I love it. I think it's actually orchestrated by a famous artist, but I'm not sure. This company picked up 7 awards I believe.

2. JC Penny Crazy Beautiful - fun to watch, but you've probably seen it already. It was cute to see again.

3. Nike Zoom LeBron IV "Pool" by Epoch Films Inc's Director Stacy Wall. This one is so funny if you watch nothing else you must see this one.

There's others, but I'm tired and have a meeting with the Hermosa Beach City Manager in the morning and other meetings the rest of the day. Yes, I'm doing it. Going to see what we can do to help stop the public drunken madness one city official at a time. I'll keep you posted.

Oh yeah, the other day was interesting - here's one anecdote which should make you LOL as it did me. Met up with my new English actor friend and a group of his model, musician, director, actor friends at the Belmont again. He shared that he'd bumped into the Hotel Rwanda director at Les Deux the other night and he was wearing a t-shirt that said, "If you see the police - (then the logo) Warner bros (get it? Warn-a-brother?)

I have had such a kick sharing that with all my friends. I think it's especially ironic since it was that particular director wearing it! Too funny. Spent some time catching up with my good friend/mentor Marcia immediately after since she lives right around the corner and we rarely see each other any more, but talk on the phone all the time. Ended up borrowing a skirt from her since mine was linen and horribly wrinkled. Thanks Marcia!

The rest of the day was filled with a lunch meeting with Robin from LA Inc to discuss future media opportunities with them. While eating bumped into my technology friend Natalie Farsi who I only see when I'm dining out every few months or so - it's just uncanny how that happens.

Then dashed up to Shana's to see her since we rarely see each other any more since I'm living in the South Bay and she's still in Hollywood. Drove back down to the South Bay for a doctor's appointment which I missed so took a quick swim to cool down and mellow out before running back to Century City to the new X Bar in the Hyatt Regency in Century City to hear my other friend Natalie aka The Liquid Muse teach  a class on how to make 4 different cocktails which was very entertaining and yummy.

Ironic, eh? However, I like to support my friend's endeavors and she personally invited me to attend so... I was just careful to soak up all the alcohol with lots of delicious appetizers.:)

Met the Hyatt hotel's amazing publicist, Jennifer Barry of The Barry Group, who I'd worked with on the hotel press release for the Los Angeles Convention & Visitors Bureau aka LA Inc. We happened to sit at the same little table and enjoyed noshing all class long. A little too spicy for me at times, but yummy nonetheless.

I really must have a mixer there soon because the outdoor patio is really, really lovely - outdoor firepit, huge comfy chairs, cool, summer breezes, and nice music playing. There was a girl laughing rather obnoxiously, but otherwise, it was very quiet overall. Extremely enjoyable. This hotel is where a lot of high-end Hollywood events are held so if you're looking for a convention location - check it out.

Then, once that was over dashed cross town to Hollywood again to Raleigh Studios (where I held one of my last festivals) for the Opening Night Gala of The Independent Television Festival and the LA TV Fest with a live performance by Biz Markie who was awesome! I had no idea what to expect and the friend I had invited bailed at the last minute leaving me to attend alone.

To be honest it was really nice to be free to do what I wanted and I actually had a great time - better than I expected! The backlot was absolutely packed with young, aspiring filmmakers. There was an energy in the air I've not experienced that often at most Hollywood events - it was like they were all expecting great things to happen and the world was their oyster. That was a great vibe to be part of.

Bumped into my Actress friend Esther and her girlfriend who I learned had been finalists that night which was great for them. Gave them a little boost and got them on the red carpet which was thrilling for them. Made me happy to help. We had fun creating fun pictures in their picture booth area.

Also bumped into a friend I haven't seen in maybe 7 years and had fun catching up with her until this weirdo guy who'd been bothering me all night came up and interrupted. For some reason my friend thought I'd want to talk to him and bowed out. I quickly gave him the cold shoulder and he finally got the hint. ICKY! Not my type AT ALL.

Now Shemar Moore, the actor, he is totally more my type and he was there. Yes girls, I gave him the flirty eye, but he had a beautiful blonde bombshell with him so I left them alone. However, later on I could swear I saw him looking at me. Isn't that so silly? Give a girl a break ok? It's been too long since a handsome black man has paid me some attention and I'm taking that to the bank.

I had to wonder if he'd read my blog from awhile back when I was cooing about how adorable he was and maybe he was wondering if it was me or not. No, Mr. Moore, I am not a stalker. Just an admirer of all that's hot and sexy and that night it was you babe. Bring it on!

Whoa, be still my beating heart. Okay, enough of the silly. What I really appreciated about that night was how multi-cultural it was. Years back when I was producing my film festival I always made sure to have representation of minorities. A filmmaker friend of mine didn't think it was that big a deal until I warned him he'd see it when he went to accept an award at the Kodak building.

When he walked in, he was the only black filmmaker there. His first name is Marshall and we both thought maybe since his film wasn't like a John Singleton ghetto film, maybe the judges thought he was white and he was there by mistake. I wonder what ever happened to him? He was extremely talented and I used to have the biggest crush on him. It was just nice to see that now at least at this festival we've come a long way baby.

Oh, I just remembered that tonight I not only enjoyed a great meal prepared by Patina, but I also bumped into my Redondo Beach editor friend, Nelson Brann, who edited the PSA I did a few years back for the Tsunami Relief Benefit I helped promote.

I didn't recognize him, but he recognized me and gave me a big hug hello. I said I know your voice and I know your face, but I can't remember your name. Then it all came rushing back. He's grown his hair out and looks completely different now! It was fun to catch up with him and his wife.

I also met the Publisher of the Creative Handbook, David Shapiro - great guy. We were having a nice chat, but I was distracted because I saw another friend, Sylvia Kahn, who I hadn't seen in more than 8 years walking towards me. She was part of my film festival days before I had my son.

She remembered me too! We met when I interviewed with the production company she had been working at at the time and we stayed friends for quite awhile afterwards. Sometimes I think I go out on interviews just to make new friends! LOL!

She's now working at Technicolor and we're going to "do lunch" soon. She's got this amazing new position and maybe there's some fun stuff for us to do together again. We'll see. You just never know who you'll bump into going out which is why I love Hollywood.

Now that my back is officially well as determined by my chiro I'm back to my usual hobnobbing in a big way which I just love. Met an Executive Producer tonight who wants to talk biz. Who knows - could start repping a post house which would be very cool. I love good creative work which is why I ran my film festival for so long despite the low pay. Not no mores though - you pay, or you don't play.

Okay, this is really all. I think the coffee I drank is finally wearing off and I'm tired enough to sleep. All in all, these past two days were a lot of fun and very good for meeting new people and catching up with old friends. Lovin' the variety!

Now to see what tomorrow (or should I say today since it is almost 2am) brings... Sleep well!

Simpson's Movie, Fritelli's Donuts, Gali Rotstein, The Counter restaurant, Paige Premium Denim

By Joy A. Kennelly

The Simpson's Movie cel art party was so cute. Here's a pic of me with the characters. I wanted to take Simpsons_party
them home with me they were so cute. I love animation. I used to market the World Animation Celebration that 50,000 people would attend. As a result, I knew all the coolest animation and animators. Amazing talent in that field.

This party was in celebration of the upcoming Simpson's Movie and the walls were filled with cel art from the TV show, Family Guy, and other famous animation from all eras. They served Fritelli's Gourmet Donuts which were quite yummy. I didn't try a Flamin' Moe martini, but those looked good too. There was a lady giving make-up tattoos that the kids just loved. Joe Montagna, Fred Willard and Tom Arnold were some of the celebrities in attendance.

My client, Artist Gali Rotstein, came, as well as, Interior Designer, Leslie Sachs and Graphic Designer, Cynthia Combs. Gali showed me the completed press kits and they're just stunning. It's really amazing what a difference good design makes. I LOVE IT! Now to get the approval or whatever I need to start pitching her.

I was rather bummed that I was too late to benefit from my EPPS mixer so to comfort myself went to The Counter restaurant by myself. A friend had taken me there before, but we had arrived when they were closing so I wasn't able to experience it then. Just reading the review on the place - no wonder it's so crowded! Oprah AND GQ Magazine say they're the best burgers! GQ even went so far as to call it one of "The 20 Hamburgers You Must Eat Before You Die."

I wasn't terribly hungry having tried a donut earlier and skipped ordering the "Build Your Own Burger" which they're known for. I sat at the counter and was joined by a very interesting South African Graphic Designer who works for Paige Premium Denim. We had a great chat and when his burger came it was definitely a concoction all his own! No wonder the place was packed with men. What a great burger joint!

My veggie burger paled in comparison, but it was delicious nonetheless. It was fun to go out for dinner alone and have a nice conversation with someone unexpected. Just what I needed to get me out of my funk for missing my mixer.

Oh well, I've decided to start a professional networking mixer for PR/marketing/design/event people since we all collaborate anyway. Should be interesting to see who attends. Looking forward to it. Last night's MB Chamber Mixer was interesting. Bumped into my sister's childhood friend there and promptly re-connected them via the phone which was fun.

Schmoozed around with my new designer friend, Gary Evans of Tiburon Design, who is extremely talented. We met at the Torrance Chamber lunch. He's one of the people I'm considering starting this mixer with. Also some of my Beach Writer friends too. It's time all of different disciplines had a mixer to support each other as a whole!

So, that's all for now. We'll see what tomorrow brings! Have a good one!

Crown Jewel Club, Shade Hotel, The Party Goddess, Gali Rotstein and Age of Love

By Joy A. Kennelly

Where to begin? Spent lunch with the Crown Jewel Club Girls over at Shade Hotel in Manhattan Beach as a fund-raiser for this delightful organization. Here's the mission statement from their Web site:

"Crown Jewel Club is dedicated to giving at-risk, inner-city girls the opportunity to learn basic disciplines in the areas of basic manners, grooming, table etiquette, and how to conduct themselves in social settings.

The goal is to provide a positive environment that fosters improved self-esteem, self-confidence, respect for themselves and others, self-awareness, self-nurturing, the value of giving, perseverance, and the importance of education, family and friendships."

Just a wonderful organization with wonderful success stories, it brought tears to my eyes to hear the children tell NBC weatherman, Fritz Coleman, and NBC Co-Anchor, Colleen Williams, (who both co-hosted the luncheon) how "Mrs. Phillips" has changed their lives.

Mrs. Phillips is the founder of this two-year old organization which has radically changed the lives of the girls who have gone through the training. I spoke to the school counselor afterwards and she said that she's been at that school for 10 years and there were always fights and disagreements among the girls in the Spring. Now, since the program has been in place, that behavior has stopped. Also, this group helped one little girl choose not to join a gang when asked to. Man...

My two little favorite girls when asked about themselves responded - "I love sushi and Mrs. Phillips." The 2nd little girl said, "I love Mrs. Phillips. She's taught me how not to be so ghetto." How cute is that? Each little girl was wearing the cutest bonnet too. Check out the Web site for pictures and more details.

There were also some real amazing little girls who wanted to be doctors, fashion designers, investigators, and one little girl who seemed destined for politics telling us how she wanted to uncover domestic violence or something like that. This from girls ages 9-11 years old living in South Central!

Shade Hotel was a really beautiful venue for this event too. They closed down the bar area and the outdoor patio for the luncheon. Free organic manicures were offered by Green Bliss Eco Spa, a traveling spa, at one end. Delicious tea sandwiches, Caesar salad, fresh fruit and petit fours were elegantly displayed and prepared by
Marley Majcher of The Party Goddess.

Five years ago when I was in the catering business (has anyone ever avoided it completely?) I worked for her company and actually ended up serving at her wedding. She is such a fun party girl. Half the room was formal china, silver, chandeliers to represent her husband, and the other half of the room was this wild animal print chairs, brightly colored plates, cups, etc (at least that's what I remember. I also remember serving jello shots a lot too - that was one fun party for those wedding guests!)

She's extremely creative, very smart business woman. I highly recommend her company to you. You can tell her I referred you as we re-acquainted ourselves at the event. She remembered me too which was fun. She produced this event and it was top notch all the way. The goody bags are wonderful with so many sponsored gifts I can't go into them all here. Just know they are spectacular and most enjoyable.

The one funny moment of the day was seeing the former Mayor of Manhattan Beach, Steve A. Napolitano, there and mistaking him for someone who worked for the hotel because of his 60's style brown shirt and matching brown pants that looked like it could be a uniform if you glanced at him quickly. I couldn't figure out why he was walking out to join all the ladies until he was acknowledged from the stage as who he was! My bad.

I had seen him at the other women's conference event I went to and couldn't figure out why a young, handsome guy like himself would attend an obviously all-female event (Okay, not really, but why did he keep showing up though?), but when it was mentioned that he was part of some other governmental office it became clear he was schmoozing his constituency (although he's very low-key - I think he likes to be supportive too. How do I know though? I don't even know the guy - only spoke a few words to him today! I'm sure everyone else in town knows him though. He seems a little shy.)

He was very gracious to the charity and offered his office to match anyone's $5,000 grant they made that day. I don't think it was that type money crowd, but this was my first Manhattan Beach event. I'm just getting the lay of the land down here.

Who knows what goes on in the Soroptomist International of Manhattan Beach? Seems like a great organization to be part of though since they do so much charitable work. I like that. I might have to see what all is entailed to be part of it because I'm impressed with the women I have met to date.

Then drove like a mad woman to Gali's (trying to burn out the additives in my engine like the mechanic suggested this morning when I took my car in for review again.) It was rather fun speeding full bore around the curves of the Sepulveda pass in my red sports car. Fortunately, no police were around because I was booking! Just doing what my mechanic suggested. A girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do!

Met with Gali to discuss strategy and next steps. Together with her designer friend, Cynthia Combs, they have created the most classy press kit from the raw press materials I gave them. I was so happy! It was beyond what I imagined it could be. Those two are EXTREMELY talented. Too bad Cynthia's moving to South Carolina to start her eco events business, but I'm sure anything she does will be first class all the way. I'm also sure you'll be hearing about her sooner than later. Mark my words.

I feel good about what Gali and I have planned now and just need to implement everything. This week is going to be extremely busy!  I'm networking like a crazy woman - chamber lunch tomorrow afternoon, Third Tuesday in the evening (don't really network there, but catch up with friends.) Wednesday night - another chamber mixer. I'm intent on checking out the local scene since I normally never hang out down here in the South Bay and am curious who participates.

Thursday morning - another networking breakfast (I overslept last week and hope to make this one - my nights can get late though!) and then that evening two events- the Simpson's movie animation art gallery opening with a cool crowd in attendance (I'm tired and not explaining it properly, but trust me it's going to be great!!!! Fred Willard anyone? How about a Flamin' Moe? I CANNOT WAIT!!!) followed by the EPPS summer mixer which is always a good time.

I pitched myself to a lot of the publicists in that organization to help with their overflow PR work. It will be nice to put the name to the faces. Also, to see old friends I don't see except for these events. Very good group of people. Highly recommend joining if you're an independent publicist, or any type actually.

Okay, I'm getting tired. I do need to say something though about the show, Age of Love. Although at one point I was hoping to like Jen, the oldest one of the bunch, as she is the spokesmodel for the clothing site I was approached to represent, can't say that I do. I think that woman is a Cougar with a capital "C." She even said it herself in tonight's episode, she only wants what she wants.

I WOULD NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, EVER date someone 18 years younger, especially if my son was that age - that's just sick and wrong. I have gone out socially with much, much younger men, but I would NEVER, ever seriously consider dating any of them! I think the youngest I ever hung out with was 18 years and even that was a huge age difference at the time. He was a model - what can I say? First red head I ever hung out socially with too. Too much a Daddy thing since my Dad's a red head - just not my thing. I like my men dark and handsome. Know anyone? :)

BTW, took my profile off yahoo because the person's profile I hid popped up in my box as reviewing my profile and I couldn't figure out how to remove him. If he's not interested enough to contact me, then why stare at his face right? However, it would have been nice, but would have been's do not a relationship make. I think I'm taking a break from online stuff for a bit except maybe EHarmony still. Too much going on this week.

Back to age vs. beauty, whoops, 20's vs. 40's. I don't think it's a fair playing field for someone that much older to pursue someone younger like that - I think what next week's episode will reveal is that Mark (isn't that his name? I'm sorry, he's not that exciting to me - handsome, but a little too naive) is more interested in just having sex with her than having a real relationship.

Also, that woman seems more interested in adding him to her (sex) belt than having a real relationship too I think. She seems too hard and calculating to be anything other than a (fill in the blank.) Can you tell I'm over wanting to work with that company?

However, maybe I should watch what I say seeing as she's the assistant to the head coach of the Lakers and if I ever need a favor, she'd probably be the one I need to deal with!:) Jen, you're a very nice woman and I'm sure you had only the best motives on the show. Really, I do. Truce?

I have to admit though, that show cracks me up when some of the earlier 40 year old women got kicked off because they were bemoaning the fact that time was slipping away (or words to that effect.) I've been there, but not on national TV!!! No reality TV for me - thank you very much. I especially would never go on national TV and announce my age to the world. A lady never reveals her age and a gentleman never asks.

I had to teach that to the little cutie patootie four year old boy who was watching softball with me the other week. I can be real kid-like around kids because I just love playing around and being silly with them which they love too. I guess I was a little too much for his serious little mind and he asked me with great concern, "How old ARE you?" I just love how honest little kids can be.

I kept teasing him and telling him I wanted to pick him up and give him a big hug he was so cute. I told him too, not only is he handsome, but I bet he's smart too, to which he replied, "Yes I am" with all the bravado his tiny little body could muster. HOW CUTE IS THAT!!! They're all coming to my BBQ so I can't wait to see him again. Very fun little boy.

Speaking of which, my little boy (9 years old now!) just sent me the sweetest thank you card for the Star Wars stamps and funny reggae head pencil I sent him for fun. He lives with his adoptive parents outside DC and he's the best little guy. I just love him. I'm going to buy some fun stationary to correspond back to him. Little boys are fun!

It's the big boys you have to watch out for. Just teasing. I wish I had a big boy in my life about now. Are you feeling me single girls? Jen? HA! LOL. In any case, today was fun. Tomorrow is going to be busy so I best be getting to bed.

Have a great night (what's left of it.)

What a great day today is for my client, Artist Gali Rotstein!

I don't know about the rest of you, but when you work alone you don't always know how your work is perceived by the public and how people will react to everything you've been promoting and working so hard to accomplish.

Most recently, I've been working with my fine art client, Gali, in somewhat of a vacuum similar to what I've just described. We weren't sure how Teri Hatcher would respond to her artwork or her new production office that Gali's associate, Leslie Sachs just interior designed which included Gali's art.

For those of you who haven't heard of Leslie, here's her background according to a web site on contemporary art I found.

"Leslie Sachs of Breathing Room Design is one of Los Angeles’ rising interior designer stars. To date, her clients include Teri Hatcher, Laura Dern, Billy Bob Thornton, Joey Pantoliano and many others who hold her in high regard for her style, aesthetic, and holistic view of interior design. A graduate of Cal Arts, Leslie incorporates strong color combinations and takes many artistic cues from the architecture of the space, as well as the client’s taste and personality.

Not only did Teri LOVE Gali and Leslie's work, she brought them into her EXTRA interview. There's so many more cool things that are going on right now, but I just had to share I'm so excited to see where this takes all of us! Gali's work is absolutely stunning and really resonates with women in so many ways. I can't wait to showcase more of it here for you.

We were all working in a vacuum not knowing what the reaction would be like and now it's better than we even dreamed! I'll let you know when the EXTRA piece will air and when they have her artwork up on their site - yes, they're doing that too! Isn't it amazing?

I'm thrilled and so happy for Gali and Leslie I was crying when they told me. Now to hurry up and get the rest of the world to know! See ya!

Gotta go prep for my PR class tonight. Wish me luck!

Beautiful Girl, World Series of Video Games, Gali Rotstein

I'm working on some projects listening to KIIS FM and Beautiful Girl  by Sean Kingston is playing. I had auditioned to play the 50's diner waitress in the music video so it was fun to hear the song. Check out the link if you want to see the actual video. I haven't been listening to the radio in awhile and am loving the mix they're playing right now.

I know, how boring - commercial radio right? But I'm lazy. I don't like creating my own playlists because I get bored with music so quickly and want someone else to introduce me to new music. Granted if I'd been listening to the radio it wouldn't be new, but still.

Anyway, just wanted to let you know I will post pix from the Kick-off party for the World Series of Video Games Presented by Intel (WSVG) at the Dallas NorthPark Center Mall where they Rocked the Park with Guitar Hero II as soon as I get them. The game store manager said it was one of the largest tournaments they've held. The winner is now entered in the final 32 for the WSVG. Cool, eh?

Apparently all 1,000 WSVG tickets were given out for the WSVG event taking place July 5-8, 2007 at the Gaylord Texan Resort in Grapevine, TX. You going to be there? If you missed Guitar Hero at the mall don't miss it again - catch the hype! Here's the blurb from our Web site:

"Be a Guitar Hero on TV! You can jump in on Thursday from 11am-6pm and Friday from 10am-1:45pm and compete for the remaining 8 positions in the Guitar Hero 2 competition. Win the crowd, but most importantly win the judges over! Judges in Dallas will include Mötley Crüe's Vince Neil, Sal "Sluggo" Accardo, Senior Editor of PC GameSpy, and TV Host Geoff Keighley."

Next up, I'm helping prep the on-site CompUSA promotion "featuring retro video arcade games made popular in the 1980’s including Pac-Man, Joust and Defender. In addition to the classics, CompUSA will also give gamers the chance to compete among each other on several of today’s most popular gaming consoles, including XBOX 360 and Nintendo Wii, connected to large plasma TV's." Fun, eh?

This is what their PR firm came up with and I think it sounds like a lot of fun - I remember those games! Anyway, enough already. Time to get back to writing. Copywriting that is. Yes, what a dull girl I am right now, but hey, it's summer, got to pay the bills and had a great day playing with friends I haven't seen in a bit.

I'm glad because Gali, my artist client, is very happy with the bio I just wrote for her. Her "Requiem for a Housewife" installation at Teri Hatcher's production office is moving right along. I'm going to ask Gali if I can post some pictures of her art in case you're curious. I love it!

Her biggest influence is Anselm Kiefer with a bunch of other contemporary artists thrown in - Roy Lichtenstein, Elmer Bischoff to name a few. Ring a bell? Anyway, enough. I'll tell you more about her later. She's very interesting.

Thanks for stopping by. Talk at ya.

Want to introduce you to my mentor and colleague

What people don't realize when they consider hiring an independent publicist, is that often that person has a collection of wise publicists and companies they collaborate with behind the scenes. One of my mentors and colleagues, Marcia Groff, is one such publicist I work with.

We met when I was promoting the World Animation Celebration awhile ago and we've been fast friends ever since. She helped me promote my own Short Pictures International Film Festival, then the Penton Media film festival I created and produced, and even now with various clients and vice versa.

We were talking last week how she needs a web presence so more people know she exists and since my blog gets recognition in Google, here she is! We have different skills and strengths which combined together make a very strong team. We would love to help you on any projects you might have and look forward to working with you!

Off to the races...

This weekend was just what I needed. We learned all about "Loving Well" with guest speaker Beth Moore's "Retreat in a box." For those of you "testy's" out there, watch out, cause I'm ready to love you well!:) Click on the link and you'll see what I'm talking about. We got all the goodies that were offered and then some! Very fun! Very nice, loving people attended.

I won a prize for meeting the most people (all 76 attendees) and completing the questionaire the fastest. We had to match an interesting fact about someone with their name and networking is my thing. I kind of felt bad because I'm a professional schmoozer, but hey, a prize is a prize!

Now I feel refreshed, renewed and ready to hit the ground running on a variety of new and closing projects. Today is Digital Hollywood Conference and a screening of The Riches with cast and creatives. Lots of other good stuff still brewing.

Gotta run, but thanks for checking in. Oh yeah, have to pitch in on this too.

Glad Paris is taking this time to grow up. Maybe her parents will see their part in her messing up as well. At least Nicky seems to have her head on straight. It must be killing the family to see their daughter suffer like this and my heart goes out to them. However, she brought it on herself and I have no pity because she could have killed someone drinking and driving. Do the crime, pay the time is my opinion on this issue.

Hopefully she will come out a new, more socially responsible person, but I'm not holding my breath. Anyway, enough of that. What did you think about Isaiah Washington getting the boot off Grey's Anatomy (just in case you hadn't heard!) Very interesting. T.R. Knight received a raise too. I guess being outed without your permission does deserve a little compensation, eh?

Okay, really must run. Have a good one. More later.

Transitioning times

You know what's the best part of living the Christian life? You realize that you're not the one in control, but God is. So if that's the case, then you can rest easy that He's got your best interests at heart and knows what direction you should be taking even when you're a little clueless. It's when we look back on our lives that we can see where God was leading us even when we didn't see it while we were in it.

Right now I feel like I'm moving forward in certain areas and moving backwards in others, but I'm finally at peace with everything which is a good feeling. I have been turning over my love life, my finances, my business, and my health to God every day in prayer because I need His guidance.

Now I finally feel like I'm ready for Him to direct my path whichever way that takes (like those verses in Proverbs 3:5-6 say: 5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. 6 Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take. Living Translation)

So, here's to the next chapter in my life. I'm ready! We shall see.

More to be revealed. Stay tuned.

Trust me she says

You know what's funny about working with people in entertainment? A lot of them never think they're big enough to have a publicist even though they're the ones who need one the most. It's because they're humble and work hard that they've achieved a certain level of success, but to get to the next level, they need that extra oomph that a good publicist can offer.

Then you meet others who think they need a publicist and they've got nothing to promote! However, their ego is so big there's some publicist out there who will just take the account because the person's willing to pay them. That's what gives my profession a bad name. I turn away lots of people and refer them to other publicists if I don't think I can help them. When I think I can, I take them on 100%.

I recently met with a young actor who has a lot going on professionally, but he doesn't believe he's newsworthy because all his friends are more successful in certain respects than he is. They have $5,000 a month publicists and those actors are coasting on huge films that they might have lucked into, but are enjoying the ride now.

Whereas this guy has been working hard all these years and has finally got a role that's going to be a breakout one for his career, but he doesn't believe it! I guess he'll just have to face the fame when it comes and hopefully find someone to work with him when he needs help.

It's just sad when you meet people who are afraid to take the next step for their careers because there's so much that could be done with them right here and now. They need to build a foundation to prepare for when fame does hit. Even if fame never hits, but they continue to be working actors, that's important too. It helps build the person's self-confidence which helps them land bigger and better roles too.

Fame is real weird. I've been written up in numerous newspapers, appeared on talk shows, and experienced it a little bit just on some of the charity projects I've worked on. I remember one time getting written up in the LA Times for the Hungarian Orphan Toy Drive I used to run and going to church the next day when this guy, who wouldn't give me the time of day before, all of sudden wanted to be real chummy. Needless to say I was rude to him because I don't have time for that BS.

Be my friend when I'm not famous, then when I am, I'll know you're true. Don't play kissy face just because you think I've got some juice now. I hate people like that. In any case, just had to share. I think this guy's extremely talented and has a lot on the ball. Now if only he believed it himself!

Okay, better run. I have a lasagna to cook. Have a good one.

Today has been a great day!

Ever have one of those days where it seems like you can do no wrong and everyone loves you? I'm having one and since it's been awhile since it's happened, I just had to share!

Today I woke up and had a call with one of the hotel organizations we're pitching in Dallas for the World Series of Video Games. The woman totally gets the concept, has some great ideas of her own to contribute, loved my ideas and totally supports what we're trying to accomplish on many, many levels! That was a great way to start my morning.

Then, went to my new chiropractor, Dr. Carrico of Performance Health, and had an amazing adjustment and massage which is making me feel like my old self again! I haven't "cracked" (I know Dr. Scott, "adjusted") that loudly or well in a long time and man, what a difference it has made in my life!

Makes me appreciate the chiro I had years back who I thought was bizarre, but now that this new guy is using some of the same equipment and tests, I understand his treatment a little better. I need to send them a thank you note because I didn't fully appreciate what he was doing back then.

After that, caught up with someone I've done business with in the past who wants to discuss new business and give me referrals. Had lunch with my dad who gave me a box of Sees candy for Mother's Day ---something he's never, ever done in my entire life of being a birthmother. He's not much into gift giving at all, but I think he knew I love chocolate so it was an easy choice!

Last year was a real tough Mother's Day for me because I didn't plan to do anything like I should have. The emotions of loss just came over me like a tidal wave. I spent most of the day crying my eyes out for my son. However, this year I know better and will try to make sure I'm around people and spending quality time with them. Adoption never really ends with the placement. This will affect me for the rest of my life I think, but I accept that it's part of my lot in life.

Finally mailed off my son's present. We're notorious in our family for giving gifts late. We've often celebrated Christmas days later just to accomodate everyone's schedules. Plus, then you get better discounts on everything. LOL. I had thought my mother had mailed it, but when I was visiting my dad today noticed it was still sitting there waiting to be mailed. (She had said she'd mail it so it's not my fault it's late!:)

In any case, the good stuff keeps on coming. Domi's article, which I posted earlier, went live this morning and looks great. This is something I've been working on with the Editor for awhile. It's great to see it finally up and live.

I stopped by a company I used to help promote on the side for a promotion they have going on and the GM told me he's referred their new PR Director to me to see about working together. That would be so awesome because I love the company and would love to work on the account. God is blessing me!

It just keeps getting better and better. The referral from the manager called me already and we'll be talking later on tonight. Had a few other new business calls and am working on a fun hotel project for the LA Convention and Visitors Bureau now. Life is good.

Just wanted to share. Hope you're having a great day and have an awesome weekend too! Big kiss! (As my client always says to me when we're hanging up...:)

The Tripper Film Premiere and other stuff

Well, well, well. I think I better sleep on my review of the Beverly Hills Film Festival Opening Night party because I'm trying to "speak the truth in love" and can't right now. Very disappointing experience in more ways than one.

However, the other events I went to were really quite delightful. Especially Actor/Director David Arquette's The Tripper Movie premiere held at the Hollywood Cemetery. Great press line (all the biggies were there - Extra, Variety, Getty Images, etc, etc), awesome set-up (lawn chairs and low tables strewn about the grassy area that currently doesn't have dead bodies - at least I don't think so!), fun food (candy, In-and-Out Burgers, kettle corn and regular popcorn,) lots of bars serving tequila and other drinks, great gift picnic blankets to sit on featuring the Tripper logo, and classy goody bags sponsored by Kinerase.

It started late which was just as well since I wanted to go hit another event and then come back to catch the after-party. However, it was extremely cold for some reason (it's been nice normally and today it just went weird go figure) and after shivering through the first half of the movie, we all decided to go.

From what we saw of it I'm sure it's going to be quite popular. I personally don't like these kind of films because they give me bad dreams, but my client, Actor Domiziano Arcangeli, really digs them having acted in numerous Italian and American horror flicks over the years. He gets off on the depravity and the fear factor I think. :)

I told you about his Werewolf In A Women's Prison right? GORY! But funny too apparently. I haven't seen it and probably won't because I don't have to see something to publicize it. I once publicized an entire anime festival without seeing a single film. Man, was it a shocker when I actually did! There were glowing butts, flying people, etc. etc. Japanese animation can be real weird. Whatever floats your boat though. That's why I try to keep an open mind.

This event was so well-organized with interesting guests and great ambiance, it was a great party. It felt like you were at a drive-in movie without the cars. Too bad it was so cold.

During the interim, I accidently stumbled into a private lecture filled with all kinds of talent agents at the Museum of Radio and TV over in Beverly Hills. I had thought that's where the Entourage panel was to be held, but learned soon after, that it was actually at the Academy over in North Hollywood and there was no way I'd make it. I debated on staying and schmoozing, but just wasn't in the mood to listen to a lecture, no matter how interesting. Not tonight!

Big bummer missing Entourage discussion! That was one event I was really looking forward to because that's one of my favorite TV shows. Oh well. There will be other opportunities. My stylist friend Nicole is so silly. She is styling "Vinnie" and has never even seen the show and doesn't realize how huge it is! How funny. Only her.

Okay, that's all for now. I have to get up early for the cable guy. I thought it was Wed, but it's actually Thursday. I was real inspired by my meetings today and am going to pitch a bunch of companies to do publicity for them now too. I've got my joie de vivre back. It's about time. Time to kick some bootay!

More events Thursday - fun! I'm telling you, when I'm socializing, I'm feeling no pain. It's just when I'm back home that it all hits me. This too shall pass.

Have a good one.
