My latest @TechZulu article for newbies and others seeking VC and Angel funding!

By Joy A. Kennelly

If you've ever wondered how companies like Twitter, Facebook, Instagram or Uber were funded and what the process involves to attract and gain investor funding, please consider reading my TechZulu article since I review four investor panels which I attended at the wonderful Silicon Beach Fest recently held in Santa Monica, CA.

In addition to those investors, I also share the insights I gained from listening to Chris Saca and other influentials within this space.

Here's the introduction to pique your interest:

Investor Insights and Highlights | An Unscientific Process

It can be a confusing world to seek funding when you’re just starting out and Silicon Beach Fest (#SBF) was a great place to learn what investors are looking for, meet investors of all levels in a collaborative environment, network with like-minded entrepreneurs, and develop relationships to further your dream and business.

Angel Investors look for very different things than more advanced VC’s who’ve been investing for years, who are different still from those who are just getting into the investing world. The bottom line though, is they want to believe in your capability to pull off whatever they’re investing in. It’s not so much about your product, concept or business, but you personally.

Visiting @LukeStoreyStyle with @SchoolofStyle Downtown LA @standarddtla and other news #Fashion #Style #Stylists

By Joy A. Kennelly

P1020494THE SCHOOL OF STYLE

Although I'm not a stylist, I've represented a few, dressed customers when I worked in retail, have assisted stylists who styled my clients for their red carpet appearances, and assisted with pulling clothes for fashion news segments when representing the Beverly Center, years ago.

Yari-de-leon-attends--the-lincoln-lawyer--premiere-los-angeles-168

Remember Actress Yari DeLeon? I assisted Stylist Jennnifer Margolin to help her pull this look together for Yari's red carpet appearance with the Lincoln Lawyer.

As a result, I understand this world and enjoy it because I also studied Fashion Merchandising and worked in retail for many years. I would never want to be the key stylist though because it's too much responsibility!:)

That's why I enjoyed popping in to hear Stylist, Luke Storey, during his School of Style at the Downtown Standard as he taught this past Sunday.

Here's some of the students who attended.

P1020511

Here's Luke's bio to give you an idea of his styling qualifications (caught him in action teaching.:) P1020490  "Luke Storey is a wardrobe stylist currently based in Los Angeles. In his 14 years as a stylist Luke has worked with a diverse range of artists such as Marilyn Manson, Foo Fighters, Sarah Machlahan, Daughtry, Rilo Kiley, Kanye West, Kim Kardashian, No Doubt, Kris Allen, TV On The Radio, and many others.

Luke has also appeared on the hit television shows The Hills, America’s Most Smartest Model, and Glam God.

In 2008 Luke founded School Of Style, a school for aspiring stylists. During a series of courses Luke teaches every aspect of the business and art of wardrobe styling. School Of Style currently offers classes at Smashbox Studios in Los Angeles, and Ace Hotel in New York City."

Similar to the Musicians Institute (where I taught social media and produced social media seminars), this school gives students a leg up in the fashion industry (just like Musicians Institute does for musicians. All musicians should check out MI's open house on July 20 in Hollywood. Register quick cuz it fills up fast: http://www.mi.edu/open-house)

It's not just the education, but also all the connections you make when joining an established vocational school in the industry you're pursuing. The School of Style creates great opportunities and more.

If you love fashion and want to cut ahead of the pack to learn what it takes to become a successful stylist faster, then you may want to consider taking School of Style vocational courses because I don't think there's another intensive like this, but correct me if I'm wrong.

Plus, the Downtown Standard is so cool you'll enjoy being there regardless. (Here's the ping pong room, and the rooftop pool is really fun too.)

P1020495 P1020500 P1020497

For the short time I was there, Luke spoke on what will get you fired, what will get you hired, the do's and don'ts of styling from the business angle and more. He's funny, tells it like it is, and pulls from his years of experience which I liked. Plus, his words of wisdom apply to any industry even if you decide a career in styling isn't for you.  P1020488 And lastly ladies, he's a cutie so not hard on the eyes.:)

When I spoke to students at the break they said they enjoyed learning about how to price their services, pursue assistant work, build their stylist portfolio and billing tips too. A few I spoke to had gone to college to pursue other degrees and careers, but decided to pursue fashion because they enjoyed it.

P1020507Fashion Blogger and Film/Commercial Wardrobe Stylist, Anika, who was in attendance said, "You can really make anything you like to do happen." She feels her social work background comes in handy for styling because it helps her to easily build rapport with clients.

Another stylist I met was Bree Cooley who surprised me because I thought everyone attending was a student, but she's actually someone who attended to recruit for her styling business.

She  has 17 years experience working in the film industry as a Wardrobe Stylist & Costume Designer if you're looking for an internship.

You may recognize her from her fashion blog too: www.stylistdiva.comP1020505

Because she's plus size like me, I asked her all my personal styling questions to which she graciously answered.

She told me contrary to what the fashion industry and editorial mags (my slang, not hers) would have you believe, over 65% of women are over size 14.

So there ya go Ambercrombie and Fitch CEO! LOL Abercrombie & Fitch's plus-sized controversy heats up; celebrities weigh in

That goes the same for all the myopic Hollywood producers who think only size 0 are relatable to America. Get a clue.

The majority of American women like to eat and we're not going anywhere any time soon! LOL

Oh, and if anyone knows Melissa McCarthy, please give her Bree's info because she gets your body type girlfriend! And her parting words of advice for all the plus size girls in the house, "Be confident in who you are. Be healthy. Own your body." Great advice for everyone to follow.

P1020510Taking Luke's courses not only helped accomplished stylists with connections, but also those who were just getting their feet wet like Visual Merchandizer, Tony who enjoyed the Do's and Don'ts and proper etiquette for this career. He especially enjoyed hearing the Superman analogy which you'll just have to attend to hear in person.

School of Style offers aspiring stylists the tools they need to get discovered and learn what they need to know.  Check it out!

And tell Luke and Lauren Joy sent you: www.theschoolofstyle.com

Oh, and if you are really interested and have time tonight, Wednesday, July 17, 2013, check out this cool class they're offering!  Stylistspotlight2 - Laury Flyer DTLA

ASHLEY BY DESIGN

"The Ashley DeRamus Foundation, a Birmingham-based charity founded for and dedicated to the education, advancement and quality lifestyle of children and adults with Down syndrome, is pleased to announce the debut of its fashion line specifically tailored for females with Down syndrome – a perfect fit that is hard to achieve off-the-rack.

'We came up with the idea for a fashion line for girls with Down syndrome because it has been so hard to find clothes for Ashley over the years, making shopping more of a hassle than an enjoyable experience,' said Connie DeRamus, mother of Ashley DeRamus, the 30-year-old founder of the Ashley DeRamus Foundation who has Down syndrome. 'Those with Down syndrome tend to have different body types than most clothing lines are made for, and we wanted those with Down syndrome to feel just as confident as anyone else, so the idea for the fashion line was born. These clothes are meant to fit without alterations and to make those who wear them feel beautiful.'

Along with her mother, the line was designed by Ashley, the inspiration and namesake of the foundation. They will both travel from Birmingham, Ala., to debut the fashion line at the National Down Syndrome Congress (NDSC) Annual Convention held July 19-21, 2013 in Denver, Colo.

While there, the Ashley DeRamus Foundation will display their designs at a booth equipped with dressing rooms and full runway for those to try on and model the new styles, which can be purchased at the convention or online at www.ashleybydesign.com

(Side note, was hoping to have some designs and a picture of Ashley to share with you, but the publicist never responded. I hope you go to their website to see a few though.:)

@KISSOnline visiting Torrance to open Rock&BrewsPCH behind-the-scenes images & video #JTA

By Joy A. Kennelly

A few months back my little town had the thrill of a lifetime when KISS Co-Founders, Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons, came to visit and opened another of their cool restaurants called, Rock&Brew. They are just a few of the owners involved, but as far as the community and other media was concerned it was all KISS, all the time.:)

I took a different approach and chose to interview everyone involved, including members of the Wounded Warrior Project who were honored with a luncheon the day of the Grand Opening. Later that night, KISS performed and helped raise thousands for education fund which was very popular.

One of my friends, Mike Jenkins of South Bay Foodies caught the night action and you can watch KISS perform below because I know you won't feel satisfied until you have.:)

Here's some fun pix from other media outlets, shots before the opening while they were jamming to get everything ready (you may recognize some folks too!), and during the actual luncheon. I created a show for Joy's Travel Adventures to showcase the afternoon which I post at the end and hope you will watch and leave a comment if you do.

Here's my first TechZulu article for your reading pleasure...Silicon Beach Fest Wrap-up Part I

Happy to announce I have been invited to be a writer for TechZulu, a group I highly admire and enjoy being around.

Here's the intro to my first article with them entitled: Silicon Beach Fest June 2013 Keynote and Accelerator Panel Highlights to pique your interest.

By Joy A. Kennelly

Whether you were a startup, an investor, a blogger, a fashionista, or someone just curious about what is happening in Santa Monica aka “Silicon Beach,” the recent Silicon Beach Fest had something for everyone which included panels, parties and more.

My particular interests lay in what investors look for and the value of participating in a multi-channel networks hence my coverage of those aspects, although there were quite robust content, fashion. gaming and mobile tracks others took advantage of during the course of the three-day conference held consecutively at ROCCross Campus and Santa Monica Place.

It was quite inspiring to hear other startup founders who started businesses in their apartments share how they turned their small companies started with maybe one or two others, into multi-million enterprises with hundreds of employees and never-ending growth in sight.

Confessions of a Runyon Canyon Hiking Returnee or Wannabe such may the case be

By Joy A. Kennelly

Never start hiking again when Los Angeles is experiencing a record breaking heat wave weekend. I learned that the hard way this past Saturday as I attempted to hike Runyon Canyon after being away for over a year. (Here's pix from my last visit I believe during the Spring.)

30479_407503243599_3579599_n  30479_407503263599_854444_n
Living in Georgia, you realize you never hike, or do anything requiring physical effort after certain times of day, because the heat will beat you down like nobody's business. I didn't believe it when I first moved there, but after awhile it affected what I did and when I did it just like locals told me it would.

There's a reason it's called Hotlanta and it aint for the fashion, although it's a very fashionable city in certain parts.

I forgot what humid heat felt like after moving back to CA where it's temperate or cloudy in June, hence the nickname June Gloom, until this past Saturday. I planned to hike at 10am and since I was going solo, finally got rolling around 11am.

What was I thinking?!

Stopping in for coffee and a tall cup of water at Starbucks, I thought I was fully prepared for the day.

Again, what was I thinking?:)

I parked two blocks below the opening and as I was walking up the hill to reach the entrance to the park, encountered a group of shirtless guys and jokingly told them, "I wish I could go around like that." We all laughed and then welcomed me to do it too, as I laughingly declined.

I continued walking and sweating, and with more walking and sweating, I contemplated turning around figuring I had my exercise for the day. However, stubborn white girl that I am, I decided to see how far I could go before collapsing with heat exhaustion.  35640_407503553599_4095448_n

Passing numerous young women wearing only their sports bras to accentuate their flat abs, I silently cursed them. Not really, but it reads better doesn't it?:)

FINALLY reaching the entrance, I was pleasantly surprised to find an enterprising guerrilla marketing girl passing out cold coconut water and grabbing shots of groups enjoying the cold beverage like we used to do during our Stonyfield Farms yogurt marketing effort.

Ironically wearing my Stonyfield Farms t-shirt, I silently wondered, as I posed with people I didn't know, if Stonyfield would appreciate the publicity on this company's site too.

Resolutely turning to face my mountain, I began the hike up the cement, past panting dogs, joggers (can you believe it?!), and others intent on getting their adrenalin high on from exercise.

The nice racial mix was a big change from when I used to hike Runyon over 18 mos ago which I have noticed across a large spectrum of Los Angeles in various aspects of society I immerse myself in. Maybe because it's so segregated in Atlanta it's more noticeable to me now, but I do think we're more of a melting pot, now more than ever, which is nice to see.

As I continued to climb, I realized I would never make it all the way around my first time back on Runyon. Due to my English, German and Irish background, I have a tendency to overheat and have fainted in the past from heat exhaustion.

In fact, after fainting in elementary school once during a school assembly, my classmates still remembered this incident at our recent high school reunion years later.

I resolved to at least make the bench around the curve which seemed to take forever to reach, but was probably only minutes.

As I reached the shady spot and sat on the bench overlooking the canyon while overheating in the shade of the trees, I realized that day was just an average day in Hotlanta and if I had looked at my weather app, I would have adjusted accordingly. 36194_407503678599_177301_n

Meaning, skipped it altogether.:)

However, I was proud of myself for making it as far as I did and after about 15 minutes of cooling down, and seeing weird guys approach who spoke of wanting to sit too, I decided it was time to get moving. Going down was much easier than hiking up and pretty soon I was happily approaching my car. Which has air conditioning.

Did I mention it has air conditioning? Icy cold too.

Life support in the form of cold air. And that is how I spent the first part of my Saturday and my first time back hiking at Runyon.

Here's a link to images from another hike I took there awhile ago: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.407503033599.182165.568603599&type=1&l=3ba1d8cee1
