Tour of Manhattan Beach at night

By Joy A. Kennelly

Sometimes you just want to let off steam and not stress over everything that's on your plate. Last night was my night to do that. I called my friend Lauren who'd just returned from Florence, Italy to join me in Manhattan Beach for an unofficial "Girl's Night Out."

She was game so we chose Upper Manhattan to start our "pub crawl". (I use that term loosely because it's so not us and because those who think I have a drinking problem will really think so when they read how many places we visited in one night. Just joking around people. Totally joking. If anything it was a "looky loo" kind of evening if that.)

Upper manhattan
The entertainment for the night was this guy playing a guitar, drum, harmonica and probably some other instrument I don't remember. He was actually quite good, but I'm not into 70's folk music so...

The place is really stunning and my "Hermosa" drink was tasty. Not so sure UM deserves so much hype though when looking around at the crowd it drew around 9pm on a Wednesday. A bunch of older (60's) arrived as we were leaving and it was predominately groups of women hanging out - not my idea of fun. I like testosterone.

We did meet some nice guys who graciously agreed to take pix just for kicks - turns out these twins are some of the multiple owners. Very clever decor and very soothing environment. Will need to go back and visit on a weekend night to see the difference. And maybe even try the menu. Just wasn't hungry.

Pancho's Restaurant across the street was packed with 20 somethings while this place tilted older which was nice. Bumped into my buddy Tony from Spa Riviera who was enjoying himself by himself.

Twins & us2  Twins & us - 3
I really must buy more flat shoes, but I keep thinking my back is going to be better faster than it's been healing which really is frustrating sometimes. Damn car accident. I really needed to go out last night.

Anyway, we then decided to go visit a couple other places since the night was young and headed out the door towards 12 and Highland since I'd been hearing about it from so many people.

However, Lauren needed a snack first. I introduced her to my favorite divey Mexican place called El Tarasco on Rosecrans right above Highland- where it's always crowded with a mish mosh of people and the food is amazingly good AND cheap.

Just the way you like authentic Mexican food. I love too that it's actually run by Mexicans because they're the real deal cooks. None of this white bread fake Mexican food other places might serve - this is authentic, roadside, divey Mexican food to die for. Oh, and if you have a sticker, bring it. They'll put it up for you.

Lauren2 Lauren loves it.  I bet Mikey would too.Tarasco
We met Mike who was down visiting from Canada. He said this is the first place he comes whenever he flies in. I asked him if he'd care to join us in my hometown tour of Manhattan Beach and of course he said sure.

We then drove down to Manhattan Beach proper where we parked in the empty city hall parking lot and walked over to 12 and Highland. Walking in, the throbbing base and dance music playing loudly was rather a turn-off, but again, another beautiful venue.

This place had a small gathering of what looked like locals gathered around the bar enjoying the loud vibe. Not our scene since we were interested in actually carrying on a conversation rather than dancing, so after briefly looking around we left and walked over to Shade Hotel.

By this time we needed to use the facilities and we were a little punchy so here's the tour of Shade Hotel's ladies room for all you guys out there who ever wondered. Notice how nice Lauren's big ring is? She's very proud of that ring and her manicure too.

See Lauren - gotta get all the details in. People like details! LOL She kept teasing me all night about what I write in my blog, but what can I say? You keep reading so I keep writing!

Notice the beautiful sink and powerfully suctioning hand dryer. We won't tell you what one gentleman told us about his thoughts for what else it could be used for because we're ladies.

We liked this place, but not enough to stay. It was definitely the most crowded of the places we'd visited up till then though and I'm sure a lot of fun. Again, just interested in actually chatting rather than competing with loud music. Plus, felt a little too cougarish for the environment. Leans young.

Then I lead the way down Manhattan Beach Blvd. and over to Mucho's since I'd been there before for dinner and wanted to see what their nightlife was like on a Wednesday. It was quiet, maybe about 15 people, and the music was great. By this time we were all ready to have another drink and stop walking.

I bumped into Jayana, an acquaintance I'd made a few months back who used to be on the Age of Love Show as one of the 40 year olds, which was nice. She's super friendly and very personable waitress there. Better hurry if you want to meet her though because she's splitting the South Bay for Simi Valley soon.

If only we were into tequila we would have had numerous choices, but we weren't and the other drink selections weren't as large. However, that doesn't matter to me because I'm not a big drinker anyway. Just sharing for those of you who are. LOL

It's very stylish, sexy, and sultry with mood lighting, ample couch like seating and comfortable booths. We enjoyed kicking back and getting to know Mike a little better. Lauren kept eying the bartender, who kept looking right back. She is quite striking you have to admit. How often do you see a brunette in CA any more right?

I like going out with her because we're such opposites in appearance, but have a lot in common because she's a publicist too. Good friend too. Check out her site here. We always discuss business and what's going on which is fun. Sometimes you just need to share with someone who gets it.

This picture was totally taken as a joke for the person who thinks I have a drinking problem. Next picture explains whose drink it really was. Mike is very nice and gave me some good ideas for wine tasting parties I'm planning for The Shore. He's a wine afficianado of sorts.

Drives exotic cars too. Can you spell Maserati? Not that I'm into that or anything, but gotta appreciate a guy who has nice wheels.

Isn't this a pretty bar? All amber and everything. I think this must be a trend because a lot of new places in Manhattan Beach have it. They probably all used the same contractor as The Shore did seeing as they had this style first.

So this concludes our tour of Manhattan Beach's newest and finest places to go out. I hope you've enjoyed this tour and come back when I take Lauren and Mike on a tour of Hermosa Beach's finest and newest places next.

This totally cracks me up - you'll love it too. Also, Ken & Kent's NY Deli- delish!

By Joy A. Kennelly

You never know how you come across until you see someone searching for you on Google using this description: "christian woman with a drinking problem joy kennelly"

I roared when I read that because whoever you are, you must not know me at all. I do not have a drinking problem. I joke about drinking, but that's all. Joking! I actually don't like the taste of beer or wine and only drink mixed drinks when I do (which is rarely if that.)

If anything, I have issues with other people's drinking, not my own. Your search made my day. Totally hilarious. Sorry to disappoint you person who is searching for that Christian woman with a drinking problem. You have the wrong Joy Kennelly.

I can't wait to tell my friends because they'll laugh just as hard. I love making people laugh and unfortunately, sometimes people just don't understand my sense of humor. Oh well. Can't please everyone!

Note to people who don't understand sarcasm - when I joke about drinking - it's only that. A joke. Got it? Good. I'm in Al-Anon for heaven's sake - not AA!

Wasn't going to blog right now, but after reading that, just had to. Can't have people thinking I'm a lush when I'm so not. Ask any of my friends and church members. They can vouch for me. You made my day.
On another note, popped into the new Ken & Kent's NY style deli that just opened up down here in Hermosa Beach and man is that place great! Click here for the write up in The Easy Reader - pix too!

Whoever booked their Easy Reader full page ad should be commended because that's what made me want to go there in the first place. Sometimes you just want to eat Jewish NY Style, right?

Highly recommend their pastrami sandwiches - fresh, moist, lean pastrami piled high on whatever bread you like with two sides - I had macaroni salad and baked beans- quite the carbo load meal!

My waitress was very attentive and sweet, the place itself is sparkling new with great skylights to create natural lighting, every dish looks great, their silverware is so new it sparkles too, their deli counter is huge, and prices typical of your average NY style deli.

Oh, and did you enjoy that little earthquake today? Pretty strong! At first I thought my downstairs neighbor was dropping something heavy, but when everything in my place started swaying I realized this was a pretty big earthquake.

Just another day in Sunny LA! Hope you're having a good one.

Stay out of trouble and watch out for Christian women with drinking problems. They might have a sense of humor about themselves!

Just have to share! MD quits medicine to blog full-time since it's more money!

By Joy A. Kennelly

Very funny news that is actually quite inspiring. We've been discussing blogging on my online women's newsletter and my friend Jennifer posted a link to The New York Times article entitled, "My Son, the Blogger: An M.D. Trades in Medicine for Apple Rumors."

Read it and weep. Now if only people would pay me a lot of money to write about the gossip and politics of Hermosa Beach I could draw a six-figure income also!

Enjoy the read. Very interesting my dear Watson.

I can't get enough of Coldplay's Viva La Vida! What about you?

By Joy A. Kennelly

I don't know what it is about that Coldplay song, Viva La Vida, but it always makes me speed extremely fast with the song loudly blaring with all my windows down.

Every single time.

Especially on quiet streets with 35 mph speed limits - I blast down going around 60 mph. It's like my little rebellion. I can't help it. It's like great music is my speed. Don't tell.:) It has to be the aggressively strumming violins and the chorus where I can sing at the top of my lungs to release stress.

Doesn't hurt to drive a sports car too, but that won't be for long. Plus, that song doesn't come on too often unfortunately... or fortunately.

I heard it on the way to church and then when I got out. Fortunately, it was early and hardly anyone was out on the streets. I promise to stop. Really I do.

I think if I play this song at home I'd drive my neighbor crazy playing it over and over again. Especially when I don't know all the words and only belt out the chorus. Can you relate? There is just something about that song. I just love it. It's kind of primal scream therapy or something.

Now to listen to the rest of the album. I know, what's taking me so long? If I like one song, then I don't want to ruin it with another one till I'm saturated with my favorite first.

Big sigh. It's like cheating on a boyfriend. Not that I have or will. Cheat that is, or have a boyfriend for that matter, but still - I love Viva La Vida and Coldplay!

Now, moving right along. Want to hear what I learned in church today? If not, stop reading, but if you're curious enjoy the read.

The skit was right on target as always - about driving while talking on your cell and the ensuing ticket the dad received that the wife found out about through their innocent young daughter. Too funny! I especially liked it when the dad said, "It's a ridiculous law anyway." To which I said loudly, "Amen" making people laugh.

I hate not being able to talk as I drive. Now I'm afraid to put my mascara and makeup on while driving, paint my toes, shave my legs, eat food, steer with one knee while I put my hair up in a ponytail, or anything at all! Not fair.

(Oh, and for those who don't get my sense of humor - that is sarcasm people.)

Today's sermon by Pastor Jim Mackinga of Bay Cities Community Church is called:

Avoiding the Potholes in Life

James - Practical Christian Living

Part 16

Mistakes We Can Easily Make

1. Hurting Others With Words We Say.

James 4:11a

11 -12Don't bad-mouth each other, friends. It's God's Word, his Message, his Royal Rule, that takes a beating in that kind of talk.

I wish a former client would read this and realize that as Pastor Jim said today, "Slander is the revenge of a coward." Slander is defined as, "a malicious, false, and defamatory statement or report: a slander against his good name."

Hopefully the threatening letter I sent will shut her up once and for all. It's not my fault if the public and the media doesn't find someone of interest. It just isn't. Either they like you and want more of you, or not. Brutal truth. I don't understand it either, but that's the breaks with PR folks.

I do the same type of publicity for every client and sometimes they hit, and other times, they just don't. No matter how much I want them to, or will them to, or how hard I pitch. Especially when they stop right when they should be pushing forward because they're at a tipping point, but run out of money. Oh well.

PR can be somewhat luck of the draw - if you want guaranteed placement... Buy advertising.

But I digress. Just a sore point that's all. I'm not innocent of talking badly about people either, but it does hurt when you think someone would be happy with everything you accomplished together (which was a lot of work to get her to the point she is today - trust me!)

What's weird is that I've generally only had this trouble with certain female artists. Not all, just some who think they're more than they really are.

Oh dear, is that talking bad about someone? Darn it. It's hard isn't it? Okay, this really is all. I promise.

Thinking lovely thoughts, lovely thoughts, lovely thoughts...

Ephesians 4:31:

31 Get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words, and slander, as well as all types of evil behavior.

Colossians 3:8:
8 But now is the time to get rid of anger, rage, malicious behavior, slander, and dirty language.

(Now Pastor Jim was meddling. Just kidding. I forgot the Bible doesn't want us swearing. Duh! Just a little reminder that Christians are supposed to live differently than the world.)

2. Improper Response to God's Law & Word.

James 4:11b

If you criticize and judge each other, then you are criticizing and judging God’s law. But your job is to obey the law, not to judge whether it applies to you.

Matthew 22:35-40:
35 One of them, an expert in religious law, tried to trap him with this question: 36 “Teacher, which is the most important commandment in the law of Moses?”

   37 Jesus replied,

“‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’[a] 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 A second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.[b] 40

The entire law and all the demands of the prophets are based on these two commandments.”

Now this chapter was very convicting because as Pastor Jim pointed out, if we really are doing God's will, we will view everyone through God's eyes and love them as He does. Jim did admit it's harder with some people than others. Truer words have never been spoken. Ha!

3. Have a Wrong View of God Himself.

James 4:12:
12 God alone, who gave the law, is the Judge. He alone has the power to save or to destroy. So what right do you have to judge your neighbor? (God doesn't need your help judging. Get it? LOL)

James 2:8:

8 Yes indeed, it is good when you obey the royal law as found in the Scriptures: “Love your neighbor as yourself.”[a]

Philippians 2:3-4:

3 Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. 4 Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too.

This verse is the hardest to live out, but I'm trying. Care to join me?

How To Be Careful

  1. Continue to be concerned with your words.
  2. Learn to Submit to God's word.
  3. Understand who's really in control.
  4. Stop arrogance in every way you can.
Okay, that's all for today. May the reading of God's word bless and keep you until we meet again. Isn't that a nice closing? I've only heard it in Presbyterian churches, and I like it.

Happy Sunday! Now to get some work done.

I'm excited The Shore Restaurant and Lounge has a bunch of cool events coming up which I need to prep for. Just met with the organizers of the Hermosa Beach Shorts Fest and they will be hosting their Kick Off Party at the Shore on August 7 from 7pm - closing.

Plus,Actor Domiziano Arcangeli's Golden Halo Award for Acting Achievement from the Southern CA Motion Pictures Arts Council is right around the corner, August 4. Oy!

And you're all invited to everything too ok? See ya there!

Remembering the Professor "whose 'last lecture' became a sensation"

Just read this news and it's very sad. What an inspiration this man was to so many.

Here's the article from By RAMIT PLUSHNICK-MASTI, Associated Press Writer and I quote...

"Randy Pausch, the Carnegie Mellon University computer scientist whose "last lecture" about facing terminal cancer became an Internet sensation and a best-selling book, died Friday. He was 47.

Pausch died at his home in Chesapeake, Va., said Jeffrey Zaslow, a Wall Street Journal writer who co-wrote Pausch's book. Pausch and his family had moved there last fall to be closer to his wife's relatives.

Pausch was diagnosed with incurable pancreatic cancer in September 2006. His popular last lecture at Carnegie Mellon in September 2007 garnered international attention and was viewed by millions on the Internet."

GoChi Juice to the rescue! Slept like a baby and I feel so much better...

By Joy A. Kennelly

Just have to share... I decided to order my GoChi Juice again seeing as I was having so much pain lately. Man, I'm so glad I did! What a difference even just one day of drinking GoChi Juice makes.

I slept like such a baby last night and my back feels better too because GoChi Juice is a natural anti-inflammatory. Those are just two of the scientifically proven 19 Reasons to drink GoChi Juice on a daily basis. Trust me, it really works.

I feel better knowing that my body is getting what I need to be healthier which makes me happy. What I also love is that I just drink 4 oz a day, either by itself, or in my water, and I'm done! Yeah!

Here's more info from the company web-site to help explain:

"In recent randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, clinical trials, the use of just 4 ounces daily of GoChi resulted in significant health and wellness benefits in 13 important categories in 14 days, and a positive impact on immune function and antioxidant power in 30 days. This has been termed “The GoChi Effect™.” Although your results may vary, the findings of this study are consistent with the results that we hear from our Customers all over the world. For optimal results, we recommend trying GoChi for at least 90 days."

More details to follow.

Last night at Sharkeez pre-opening party and other stuff...

By Joy A. Kennelly

Just real quick since I have a lot of stuff going on right now to take care of before tonight.

Last night at Sharkeez was fun because a friend and I joined another couple of friends who kept us laughing most of the evening. Much more mellow crowd than Saturday, but same great food, drinks and venue.

Don't miss tomorrow night's public Grand Opening party from 5pm on. Should be real fun. 52 Pier Ave, Hermosa Beach, CA 90254 - everyone welcome, but drink responsibly. Hermosa Beach is really cracking down on public urination, public drunkenness, and other stuff involved with drinking...:)

I'm skipping today's final pre-opening party at Sharkeez because I don't want to be over-exposed there. HA HA! Just kidding. I have a dinner business meeting to attend tonight anyway which precludes my going also. Where does the time go?

Whenever I create my master lists I'm always amazed at how many things I've got going on that I just take for granted until I see them in writing. Oy!  More to share later, but for now, just wanted to say hey, how YOU doing?

I have people to see, places to go, things to do so ttfn!

Hope you're having a good one!

Actor Domiziano Arcangeli's press kit - by award-winning Vista Point Pictures...

By Joy A. Kennelly

Click here to check out the cool press kit award-winning design house, Vista Point Pictures, created for my client, Actor Domiziano Arcangeli.

Highly recommend their work and am referring everyone I know - and I'm not just saying that because we've worked together on another project. Here's some other's testimonials too:

Client Testimonials

Arlene Bogna's professional expertise helped navigate the complicated world of CG for our new television project, and also made sure our goals were attainable within our budget by advising quality solutions for our many special requests. It was a real asset to work with someone with such a broad range of talents in both visual effects & design, as well as a firm understanding of the filmmaking process. Arlene helped us map out our project at the concept stage, then executed each phase with diligence and artistry. Not only did she supervise and create our effects, but she also designed our logo and provided an integrated "look" for our pilot presentation - including a cohesive motion graphics package, branding within our special effects shots, and full support for our printed marketing collateral. To top it off, her strong aesthetic sense in art direction gave our project a top-notch look. A-list quality work is finally accessible to the indie filmmaker. I highly recommend Vista Point Pictures for all visual fx needs.

I want to take a minute to recommend the work of Arlene Bogna and Vista Point Pictures. She came to my rescue when I had to fix helicopter shots with visual interference from a recent music video I directed. Her solutions were smart, prompt and effective.

Sarah Elgart

Vista Point Pictures created great graphics for us in no time. From start to finish, the process was seamless and professional. It was a pleasure to work with Arlene Bogna. When you need graphics, Vista Point Pictures should be your first call!

I called Vista Point Pictures when one of my clients needed an experienced editor/designer to create and produce a short promotional video. Since my client hadn't done anything like this before, Arlene had to build something out of virtually nothing -- which she did, in flying colors! Vista Point Pictures was on time and under budget, so the client was thrilled. They still don't understand what a miracle VPP pulled off!!

Finally have time to write up Pastor Jim Mackinga's great sermon "How to Get What You Want"

By Joy A. Kennelly

Here's a little recap of last week's sermon and then this past Sunday's sermon brought to you courtesy of Pastor Jim Mackinga of Bay Cities Community Church located at the Women's Club in Redondo Beach, CA.

Enjoy! Just realize I'm not perfect, just forgiven. HA! I just had to say this trite phrase because everyone always does. I do realize I'm a little more open-minded than the average Christian on certain things, but I am totally into the Bible and what it has to say.

God bless you in the reading of His word. Amen.

"How to Get What You Need"

James - Practical Christian Living

Part 15

How Normal Life Works

1. We experience turmoil then pain.
2. We try to numb the pain through pleasure.
3. We end up facing conflict and anger
4. We watch hope for satisfaction disappear.

Options when Facing Normal Life (We)

1. Try fixing things through other people.
2. Try manipulating God to do what we want.
3. Look for things in this world to satisfy.
4. Let God satisfy me and meet my needs.

Normal Needs We All Possess

1. To be secure in life.
2. To be loved in life.
3. To be valued in life.
4. To be significant in life.

How God Gives Us What We Really Need

1. By accepting the world for what it is.

James 4:4:

4 You adulterers![a] Don’t you realize that friendship with the world makes you an enemy of God? I say it again: If you want to be a friend of the world, you make yourself an enemy of God. (Oh dear - maybe I should rethink this again. Jim asked the question - Who is your God? and then answered, Whatever you love the most.)

The Truth about Us and the World

A. The world can not meet your needs.

B. We are designed to be dependent on Him. God is jealous over you. He LOVES you.

2. By Allowing God to Meet my Needs.

James 4:5-6:
5 What do you think the Scriptures mean when they say that the spirit God has placed within us is filled with envy?[a] 6 But he gives us even more grace to stand against such evil desires. As the Scriptures say,

   “God opposes the proud
      but favors the humble.”[b]

1 John 4:13:

13 And God has given us his Spirit as proof that we live in him and he in us.

The Truth about God and Us

A. God desires to meet our needs.

B. God promises to meet our needs. God gives grace to help us. Divine intervention. My grace is sufficient for you the Bible says. God can, and will, meet your needs.

3. By renewing my relationship with God.

James 4:7-8:

7 So humble yourselves before God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8 Come close to God, and God will come close to you. Wash your hands, you sinners; purify your hearts, for your loyalty is divided between God and the world.

Steps to Renewing My Relationship with God

A. Surrender to God's leadership in life.

B. Continue resisting the devil.

C. Draw near to God.

D. Let failure affect your heart and change behavior.

4. By placing our hope and trust in God.

James 4:10:
10 Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up in honor.

Psalm 37:4:

4 Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you your heart’s desires.

My Part, God's Part

1. To humble yourself is to simply respond to Him.

2. God promises that He will impact your life.

This Can Be Your Future

Isaiah 40:28-31:

   28 Have you never heard?
      Have you never understood?
The Lord is the everlasting God,
the Creator of all the earth.
He never grows weak or weary.
No one can measure the depths of his understanding.
29 He gives power to the weak
      and strength to the powerless.
30 Even youths will become weak and tired,
and young men will fall in exhaustion.
31 But those who trust in the L

ord

will find new strength.
They will soar high on wings like eagles.
They will run and not grow weary.
They will walk and not faint.

What a fun weekend! Sharkeez pre-opening party and other stuff...

By Joy A. Kennelly

If I have to be stuck in my neighborhood because I can't drive very far right now, I guess living in Hermosa Beach aint so bad after all. I've got the beach, good friends, beautiful weather, lots of fun, free stuff to do, and great restaurants all within walking distance. Doesn't get any better than that. Right?

Saturday shopped for the perfect outfit to wear to Sharkeez Pre-opening party and a private party on the rooftop of the Thompson Hotel which was fun, yet stressful too in its own way.

I need a new bathing suit now and trying to find something cute at the same time for the beach and the parties just wasn't happening. No bathing suit, but some other stuff.

Guess I'll have to skinny dip till I find something I like. JUST KIDDING.

One time when I was backpacking through Europe, I went to the beaches of Nice, France. I was all excited to go topless when for the first time the whole trip, I met this really cute guy. I was too shy then. Damn that cute guy. Just kidding.

Looking around at all the other pale English babes burning their boobies beachside (I love alliteration, don't you?) made me realize that the concept of wearing a backpack while burnt, just wasn't a smart thing to do. So, I skipped it. No regrets either.

Speaking of nakedness, what I've been experiencing lately with young guys (yes, I have that Cougar element - if you speak it, they will come...) who act interested in me who send me pix of them in just their Calvin Kleins. Whoa baby!

I'm very flattered, but I'm just not that kind of girl anymore. At least I'm trying hard not to be. But have to admit, it's getting harder and harder! I've been good for a very long time and not in the mood to falter now, but hot bods in my email box doesn't make it any easier.

It's very nice to think that young guys are sexually interested in me. But then again, they're young. Aren't they sexually interested in everyone? LOL

Just learned that another friend of mine is a bona-fide Cougar since she's in her 40's and her guy is 25. You go girl! Why should Demi have all the fun?

What cracked me up today is that casually chatting with a new friend about this recent phenomena in my life, she assumed that I only dated younger men. Then, when a guy closer to my age expressed interest in me to her, she said, "Oh, she dates younger men."

Then she tried to interest me in him saying he wasn't too old since he was just 40. She totally cracked me up, but also embarrassed me because that's totally not who I am. I may tease a lot and enjoy young men's company, but I like all kinds of guys - young, old, black, white, husky, hot, whoever...

Here's an article from Yahoo which gives you tips just in case you're curious about Dating Older Women though: http://dating.personals.yahoo.com/singles/datingtips/86378/dating-older-women;_ylt=Av6gqJFFAWxvvCpDiEIIxVwazJV4

Pretty funny, eh? But true.

Enough on this. On with the party report!

I must say, I'm getting more and more tired of the BS that goes on with Hollywood/Beverly Hills parties. My friend and I made the effort to go all the way up to the Thompson Hotel only to be told we weren't on the list and they refused to help even though she had rsvped, was an advertiser, and we requested they find our contact (as you normally do whenever the door guy is clueless.)

Well, despite our best efforts with the lame hotel staff (sorry, but it's true - total lack of customer service. OY!) and leaving a message with one of the party staff for our contact we weren't able to connect and chose to leave because Sharkeez was a' calling.

Turns out my friend's contact did have us on the list and emailed Lana twice thinking she had a blackberry and would see it, but we didn't till too late. That type of list crap just pisses me off. Oh well, it's over. Bye bye bitches. LOL

We had a great time when we got back to Hermosa at The Shore first because I wanted to show off the space for Lana to consider for one of her fashion clients. She loved the space, loved the food, and everyone there. We'll figure out all the details and then you'll be the first to know.

After a bit, walked over to Sharkeez where we were warmly greeted and treated like the VIP's we are. JUST KIDDING! I love saying that, but am totally joking. I'm not like that, but I do hate disrespect of me, or anyone else for that matter.

Back to the party.

What a hopping place! There were so many people there, many I didn't know which was fun. I also saw a lot of people I do know and some I've been curious about (like the former mayor of HB nicknamed Burgie.)

Also bumped into a guy I've wanted to meet because I think he's interesting, but never had the opportunity to do so until last night. Turns out not only is Dan an Emmy Award Winning cinematographer, he's also involved with our Public Works department in a leadership capacity.

He told me about some guy at their last meeting who became so belligerent Dan had to use the gavel for the first time ever to get back control of the meeting! All this over a stupid sidewalk! That's what cracks me up about living here in Hermosa. People are such characters!

Here's an example of one right now. Some of you may recognize him. I took a pic with him while he may not know who I am because if he knew, he probably wouldn't have been as friendly.

This man Burgie, many believe, was the guy who is responsible for all the lawlessness of all the Downtown bars because he kicked the ABC (Alcohol Beverage Control) out of Hermosa years ago. They're back now and really active.

Me berge2\
Burgie totally reminds of my friend's Dad because they look alike. Burgie's more wild though, that's for sure. Very fun-loving guy, but...

Here's another one of him and our local Planning Commissioner who shall remain nameless to protect the innocent, but if you live here, you know him. Big kiss PH!:)

Sorry, Ron didn't take my camera away... Just know, this is all in fun ok? You are a good guy and we all love you... You're allowed to let loose too since it's been stressful for you too!:)

I think PH just told Burgie who I was. Big difference in his demeanor, eh? Or maybe he's sucking something sour. Love you Burgie!:)

Ph & Burge2

There were a lot of other fun happy people in attendance and Sharkeez is wonderful. The food was quite delicious, our bartender cute which lead me to drink more than my usual (what can I say? It's been stressful lately!), and just a great, happy vibe.

Here's some more pix from last night:

Crowd scene

Aren't the decorations fun?

Here's the happy owners in the next pic. Very nice guys and extremely smart business men. Gotta love handsome AND smart, right? Don't be thinking anything, they're both very happily married to very beautiful women. I'm just saying...

Happy owners2

Ron & me & Julie2

Recognize my picketing bud, Julie? She's running SURFin Hermosa group along with a bunch of other people which, and I quote, "is a new group of civic-minded Hermosa Beach residents who have made a commitment to work together to protect and enrich the traditional quality of life in our city.

Their steering committee is comprised of former City Council candidates, long-time city activists and concerned citizens and business owners. 'SURFinHermosa' is a new link connecting members of the community to our city's various institutions, dedicated to seeing that the rights and responsibilities of every citizen are served."

This has been a public service announcement.

Ph burgie2

More of the happy dudes enjoying the evening.

Brady & me2

This is our bartender, Brady. I wasn't lying was I? Tall too! Wonder how old he is? LOL

Lana2

My good friend Lana enjoyed herself too. Doesn't she look pretty?

Joy, Julie & Bobby2

What do you call a blonde and two red heads? Out numbered!:)

Mk2

I see he liked our bartender's skills too!:) Yummy tropical drinks I must say. I recommend the Mai Tais.

Ron & sienna2

Ron Newman with his mistress. JUST KIDDING. She said I could say that. This is Sienna Tucker, our local councilman's wife. Remember her?

We all had fun last night and attempted to let bygones be bygones. Doesn't she look pretty here? She's very civic minded and heads up a lot of great groups in the city. Thanks Sienna!

Me & crowd2

This is to give you a little idea of what more of the interior looks like. Isn't it fun? Totally cabo beach vibe. We had a great time and it made me happy to live in Hermosa Beach. Real people, real good times, and real good food.

That's all for now. Will share more about the great sermon Jim shared over at Bay Cities Community Church later. Really helps to have someone wise speak God's truth into your life is all I have to say. The only thing keeping me from being a floozy. JUST KIDDING!

Well, maybe just a little truth...

God bless everyone! Have a great week!

Hermosa Beach in the news last night... Blue 32 & The Shore

By Joy A. Kennelly

Real quick now...

I've just created another new blog because I'm moving my professional one from Wordpress over to Typepad. Here's the link: www.thejoywriter.typepad.com/thejoywriterpr if you want to check it out.

If you want to watch the Hermosa Beach Planning Commission hearing, then click here: http://hermosabeach.granicus.com/ViewPublisher.php?view_id=2. Go to the Planning Commission button and then click on the July 15 agenda's video link.

If you watch, notice the huge contrast in the way Blue 32 handles their approach vs. the casual, laid back way The Shore does. HUGE difference. Which is why The Shore wasn't restricted other than their closing time to keep with their ABC License.

I come on about 3:45:59 (no swearing this time, I promise.) till 3:48:16 - just drag the cursor till you find it. I used to produce high-end networking mixers all over Hollywood and Los Angeles in conjunction with my Short Pictures International Film Festival (4 mixers, private parties and other events a year in addition to the actual 2 day festival) back in the 90's and only recently have begun producing events again which has been a lot of fun.

But enough on that...

The hearing begins for Blue 32 at 11:22:00 and runs till 2:37:00. The Shore hearing begins at 2:37:31 and only runs till 4:17:53. Apparently, the poor Planning Commission guys were there for 7 hours total that night hearing everything else because there was a hotel development that had a lot of neighbors up in arms too. Never a dull moment in Hermosa Beach politics!

Also, if you want to keep up on the news happening in Hermosa Beach, here's another local site that is more into the politics and news coverage than even I am. It's called the Hermosa Beach Neighborhood Association so check it out here: http://www.hbneighborhood.org

Following is the Channel 11 news coverage of the decision handed down by the Hermosa Beach Planning Commission. Apparently, Chef David Linville was interviewed, but this news link doesn't reflect that.

Blue 32 has had severe restrictions put on them (they must close at midnight, no dancing, must serve food with alcohol etc.) which is why it's probably the main focus. Whereas The Shore's Chef David's interview which is very mellow and nice isn't as exciting a news story, but is part of this news coverage only because their hearing happened the same night. And got cut on the online version!:)

If I find more, I'll post it, but enjoy the coverage in the meantime before it gets switched out: http://www.myfoxla.com/myfox/pages/News/Detail?contentId=7009911&version=1&locale=EN-US&layoutCode=VSTY&pageId=3.2.1

I think if enough stupid people who only come here to get drunk and party see that Blue 32 is closing at midnight they might reconsider driving all the way down here and then we'll get the real tourists and clientèle we as a city welcome.

The Shore, which can still have dancing, charge a cover, continue with quality live entertainment and stay open till 1am because it was determined to be abiding by its Conditional Use Permit, has some great events coming up which we'll be sure to let you know about.

Empty shore from the front2

That's all for now. Off to enjoy my Friday night and rest my neck...

THE SHORE RESTAURANT AND LOUNGE DETERMINED TO BE OPERATING UNDER CONDITIONAL USE PERMIT

I'm just so happy and have no one to share this with except you all...

By Joy A. Kennelly

Tonight, at the Hermosa Beach Planning Commission, it was decided whether or not my newest client, The Shore Restaurant and Lounge, would have their hours cut back from 2am (or else it's 1am - I'm really tired and forget exact times) to 12 midnight or not. That's huge in the restaurant business because that's prime  money-making time.

Don't people look better after a few drinks? Not that I would know, but still.. Just kidding. In any case, I couldn't sit through the entire hearing for Blue 32 because of my back, but waited until The Shore was up for review before coming down.

I believe Blue 32 had their hours cut back to midnight, but I'm not positive. I do know the owner wasn't happy about it. Once the video from the commission meeting is uploaded, I'll provide a link and the exact place you can scroll to to see me speak if you're so inclined.:) Oh wait, I mean the decision being handed down. It's not all about me right? HA! (Oh, and I don't swear this time btw. LOL)

I ended up sitting there from 9pm till almost 11:30pm, Pity the poor Commissioner guys who had to sit through both hearings. But pity me too because my back hurts now! Fortunately I have P/T tomorrow which should help. I'm learning to live with the pain, but still...Glad relief is on the way. But again, enough about me.

As a publicity stunt, I had suggested our Chef, David Linville, bring in food to serve the commissioners during our hearing. All the owners loved the idea, but practicality set in and they decided not to. Too bad because as Chef David was sharing his concept and food preparation, everyone's mouths were watering. One of the commissioners laughed and asked if we had brought any to share.

See, I'm always thinking outside the box. I just know myself, sitting through those boring meetings you get real hungry! Fortunately, because we won this small victory we all chose to go down to The Shore to celebrate together. I feel real good about the decision and how everything was handled.

I believed the owners to be good, honest men who really do care about doing what's right which is why I chose to work with them on this hearing and why I stood up on their behalf. They didn't have any CUP violations and really do have a high-end restaurant feel to their place because of Chef and the GM, Brian. Quality guys both with stellar backgrounds.

Plus, one of the owners, Dr. Rainer Beck, has owned numerous successful restaurants including Harvelle's in Santa Monica (which used to by my former boyfriend's favorite hang and as a result mine too) and Trio's in Manhattan Beach. When I met him and talked to him I realized he knows how to operate a proper restaurant which convinced me to work with them.

Now that we're working together we will start implementing more of the old ways Rainer publicized Harvelle's and new ways that I think will be popular too. I'm so happy things turned out ok. I felt extremely conflicted right up until I was called to speak because I've been one of the louder proponents complaining about Downtown issues in Hermosa Beach.

However, I really do feel like these business owners care about doing what's right and are open to listening to ways to improve when need be. And if they mess up, I'll make sure they hear about it! They'll get a spanking from Mama Joy. And they're not going to like it! Just kidding. They might actually like it. LOL Totally kidding now. Can you see I'm getting punchy?

It's just nice to have a classy establishment in Hermosa Beach to offset the others who give us the drunken reputation we've had for so long. Hopefully, if I publicize things right and Gene Shook continues to publicize his high-end restaurant right, we'll develop relationships with local residents in Hermosa Beach who crave fine dining and a higher end place to enjoy a night out. Hopefully others outside the area too.

Why should Manhattan Beach have all that crowd? Hermosa is a very eclectic, sophisticated, beachy, fun, unique place. It's nice to see we can welcome a diversity of places and attempt to balance our community in this way.

Okay, now I'm really tired. I'm just very happy too. It's always nice when clients have success and this was a huge coup for all of us. I was praying the whole time because I really wanted to know God's will in what I should say before the Planning Commission since I've been so out-spoken against status quo. However, I really feel this is what's best for our city in my heart of hearts.

Now to publicize the hell out of our victory and the quality of our restaurant! Watch out world! Here we come with both guns blazing! Can't wait to get started and get the buzz out there. We all hope you'll consider The Shore for your private functions, wedding receptions, mixers, and any other special event you have coming up. Also, come on down and enjoy a meal! You won't regret it. Very cozy vibe and great food.

I'll give you more details soon. Just thanks for reading! Now I'm going to bed. Happy and satisfied since we all ate afterwards. I knew there was a reason I took on this client....:)

Aaahhhh....

Girls just want to have fun (including Kathy Griffin...)

By Joy A. Kennelly

I don't know what those Greeks put in my iced coffee today, but it's 4:30am and I'm wide awake! It's the only thing I can think of. Just teasing. Or am I? That, plus the fact that I totally overdid my fun today and my back is telling me so in no uncertain terms. I'm waiting for the two Ibuprofen to kick in to put me to sleep.

Backs are so weird. When you're feeling good and not injured, you never know it's there. However, once you're hurt, then it feels like a hot burning rod that says, Here I am. Don't sit there. Wait, don't lie like that. No, that's not right either. Stop it. You're hurting me! OUCH! OUCH!

OY VEY!!!

Fortunately, I will have relief in the morning when I visit the doctor's office. Oh wait, it is morning. I don't think I've ever in my life stayed up this late except for..., oh let's not go there. Memories, like the corners of my mind. Is that the verse? I think I'm becoming delirious. Just kidding.

What totally cracked me up, is here it was 3:30am in the morning and since I'm not sleeping I think, let's see what all the other insomniacs watch. Lots and lots of informercials, but then, I flip to Bravo and guess who was on?

My new best friend, Kathy Griffin! I can not even believe it. I can't get away from that redhead. She was just what the doctor ordered. She's my Oprah. You know how other people turn on Oprah to escape their life? Well, I'm watching Kathy to escape my pain. Thank you Ms. Kathy Griffin.

Thank you too, for bleeping out the bad words. Although I have to admit, I did swear during a recent Hermosa Beach Planning Commission meeting which was televised, so I'm not innocent either. However, it's much more pleasant to watch your show sans the F bombs. Now if you could only teach Chris Rock to clean up his act too.

Wouldn't it be funny if someone washed out all the celebrities mouth's who swore on TV? Think of all the lives that could be changed by cleaner airwaves - young kids growing up realizing that the F word isn't an adjective. Teen-age boys realizing that the F word doesn't signify making love. 20 somethings the same thing. 30 somethings same thing. 40 somethings I don't know. Our whole world might have an expanded vocabulary!

I AM SO TIRED! Why can't I sleep? I'm telling you. Don't order Greek iced coffees if any one ever offers you one ok? Trust me, it's murder. My body is so tired, but my mind is racing a 100 mph. TURN OFF PLEASE! Generally whenever I've not been able to sleep before, I blog and then my mind goes calm and I can sleep.

So, back to Kathy. So, here I am, 3:30am in the morning watching Kathy go to a Bear convention. Now when I first heard the news, I thought it was for people who get off dressing up in bear costumes which is funny and weird as it is, but it's not that. It's gay men who look like bears.

Now that really is Life on the D list. Too funny.

Now what was so hilarious about this one is that Steve Woz, her beau (you know, the guy who created Apple Computers with the other Steve), actually looks like a bear himself and the bear gays were into him! Woz is such a crack-up because he's so brilliant and yet so naive it's really endearing. She kept calling him the Billionaire bear. Wouldn't you like to take him home with you?

I now see why Kathy likes him and vice versa. She's very smart. He's very smart. He's not phased by her act. She's not phased by his wealth. He accepts her for who she is. She accepts him for who he is. Isn't that what we all really want after all? They're adorable together.

I also learned why Tom, her male assistant, always looks so odd. He plucks out his top eyelashes! No wonder! I thought it was because he just looks bug eyed, but now that I know this... Makes total sense. Nothing against you Tom. You're a good man, but you have to know this isn't helping your appearance.

I should talk. I pull hairs out of my eyebrows just for the hell of it when I'm too lazy to do it properly. I figure I'm so blonde no one can really tell what my brows look like anyway, but every so often there's these little gaps that show up when I put color on them.

Stop looking at me! It's really not that noticeable, but since Tom shared his beauty secret, I felt I should share mine too. I'm bonding. Don't try this at home.

Now if these stupid Ibuprofen I just took would only kick in. I've been trying not to take any drugs because I find when I do, then I really over do it because I don't know when I'm hurting my back as easily. When I'm not, then I do. However, I'm trying to sleep so hopefully this will kick in soon. I really must get some Motrin and GoChi Juice asap.

GoChi Juice is a natural anti-inflammatory and also helps your sleep. When I was drinking it before I felt really good and slept really well. Now, without it. OUCH! Insomnia! However, I'm trying not to complain because who wants to hear someone going on and on about this? I don't. I bet you don't either.

But if it bugs you so much, stop reading ok? I'm not paying you right? Sorry, feeling a little grouchy. Meow. Hiss...

Okay, I think that's all I wanted to say. I just really wanted to have some fun today because I'm so tired of not being able to live my normal life since this accident. Guess I really need to baby myself which I don't like doing.

Oh, and nothing against the Greeks. I'm just teasing. I'm also just teasing when I refer to my friend as a Desperate Housewife. She laughed so so should you ok? Life's easier when you can laugh at yourself. Right Kathy?

Okay, time to try to sleep again. Opa!

Isn't it sad that Tony Snow has died now too? Other stuff...

By Joy A. Kennelly

It was so sad to hear the news last night about the death of Tony Snow. Just had to share. Makes me want to be a better person to hear some of the tributes given to him. What a quality guy.

Hit the local Greek Festival today over at St. Katherine's Greek church. OPA! It was very cute. Filled with tons of Greek people and others enjoying the Greek food, Greek booths, Greek music, Greek dancers, and Greek drinks. It's good to be Greek today!

Then caught some of the Manhattan Beach Polliwog Park free concert tonight. Country music, y'all. It was so nice to throw a couple blankets down on the grass and lay down watching the clouds roll by while I caught up with friends I haven't talked to in awhile listening to good country music. Happens every Sunday (not country every time, but a variety of free music. Thanks MB!)

Does anyone else find that their social life is cut in half now that you can't drive and talk on the phone without a headset? I really have to find mine because it's "driving" me crazy not to talk while I drive. Never realized what a habit this was until I can't do it.

Anyone else secretly texting, or talking into the phone in their lap with the speaker on? Not me!:) LOL

Time to get some writing down now. Got a lot business done Friday and have a lot to do this week too. Should be good.

Hope you had a nice weekend too.

C ya. Domiziano's info is coming soon. I promise.

What a difference time off and wise counsel makes... other stuff

By Joy A. Kennelly

I took some time off from everyone and everything yesterday in attempt to heal emotionally and physically which was exactly what I needed to do. Now I'm back to my old self a little wiser, a little happier and a little better. Time heals all wounds I guess.

I think I was a lot more receptive to today's sermon as a result too. Jim Mackinga over at Bay Cities Community Church is really a gifted teacher. Every single time I think that's my last Sunday there because I don't have many single friends from there to do stuff with, he gives a sermon that makes me realize I would really miss his teaching if I left. Friends I can find outside church I guess. I do love my married ones there though.

Today I actually had some cute guys (too young, but still) sitting next to me so it's all good. Guess God is throwing this old cougar a bone after all. God bless the young hotties is all I got to say. There was a really funny skit to elaborate the point that the world thinks having a man to love is going to solve all your problems when it's really only God.

The scenario was two women discussing a mutual friend who they think will be all better if she only had someone to love in her life. They think of all the guys they can set her up with which was very funny. Then one suggests EHarmony. We all laughed when the other answered, "I, I mean a "good friend" tried EHarmony with not so good results."

I've tried EHarmony too and never met anyone I'd be interested in. Sorry, I'm a little shallow, but I think physical chemistry has to be there too. I like good looking guys. What can I say? Always have, always will. Part of the reason I moved back to the beach. Those are my kind of guys.

I think if I really were a Cougar I could have such fun with all the young un's down here. Unfortunately, not into flings any more. I want a real relationship with a future. So, although it was hard to do, I cut loose the young un who has been very sweet to me lately.

If someone is drunk almost every time you speak to them, or is looking to get wasted all the time too, that doesn't bode well long term. When will young guys realize it's a big turn off to cougars? Just kidding. I really am not a Cougar, I just tease about it because I think it's funny.

My girlfriend Shana keeps telling me that getting drunk is what 30 year old guys do and just to go with the flow. Plus, she tells me she's a little jealous I'm catching the attention of a young 'un since she's married and can't do anything about it when they hit on her. She cracks me up! I might change my mind because it is nice to have male friends. We'll see.

Guess it's ok to have some fun though, right? Still trying to figure all this out since young un's aren't my usual demo. Flattering though. Hello hottie babies... Just kidding.

What was cool about today's sermon is that it really spoke to real life issues. Here's the notes in case you're interested:

How To Get What You Want

"James- Practical Christian Living"

How Normal Life Works

1. We experience turmoil then pain.

2. We try to numb the pain through pleasure.

3. We end up facing conflict and anger.

4. We watch hope for satisfaction disappear. (Jim says then we become less fun to be with. We become mad, sad and ultimately alone since no one wants to be around us. Without a solution we lose hope. Been there, done that. OY!)

Options When Facing Normal Life (How people deal with stuff...)

1. Try fixing things through other people.

(This one really spoke to me because I think I've been a little hard on my friends. My one girlfriend is married with two little kids, a demanding career, and busy social life. I just need to accept that fact and realize she can't always be the best friend I want her to be when I want her to be. Doesn't make it any easier, but does give me more compassion on this friend.

Also, the other one is really going through stuff too. It's not easy losing your job and worrying about how you'll pay your mortgage and take care of your son as a single divorced parent. I have faith we will work things out, but it will just take some time because we need to work on caring communication vs. brutal honesty. Looks like I'm getting a taste of my own medicine, but if I can change there's hope for others too.

It really helped to hear some other people's perspectives and shares yesterday and realize I'm not alone with my stuff. Very healing too. (God bless 12 step programs.)

James 4:1, 2a

What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don't they come from your desires that battle within you? 2You want something but don't get it. You kill and covet, but you cannot have what you want. You quarrel and fight.

Then Jim shared that no one person can fix us or meet all our needs, only God. Over time a relationship can't handle the pressure and it falls apart. So true. Jim is very funny and he said, "In the words of the great theologian Mick Jagger..." referring to the infamous song "Can't Get No Satisfaction."

The 2nd way people approach normal life is...

2. Try manipulating God to do what we want.

James 4:2b - 3 You do not have, because you do not ask God. 3 When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with that you may spend what you get on your pleasures.

Jim says we are a pleasure seeking people, but pleasure isn't the ultimate answer for us. Bummer. If only it was... (That's me, not him speaking and I'm being facetious!:) Only God can fill that hole in us.

3. Look for things in this world to satisfy. (Like drugs, alcohol, sex, food, material things, the list goes on and on...Isn't that a nice list? Just kidding...)

Philippians 4:9 and 19 9 Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you. (This is our guarantee if we pursue a relationship with God. Peace.)
19And my God will meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus. (I've found that in my life for sure.)

Jim said the Beatles song, All you need is love should have been, all you need is God.

Here are some of the normal needs we all possess that Jim swears by:

Normal Needs We All Possess

1. To be secure in life.

2. To be loved in life.

3. To be valued in life.

4. To be significant in life.

When these needs are met through God, our life is worth living. Then we can bear fruit for God. So, that's the moral of this message everyone. Hope you enjoyed the crib notes.

If you're searching for a place to worship, then pop over and visit <"http://www.baycitieschurch.com">Bay Cities Community Church sometime. I personally welcome all young hotties. JUST KIDDING! Seriously though, they have a cool 20 something group called Zoe. Call Tyler for more details: 310 877-9753.

You oldies can come too. Not to that group, but to services ok? LOL Can you see I'm really feeling better? Now to go hit the local Greek festival and get me some baklava. Then if I still feel good to hit the country music over at Polliwog Park. I need more fun.

Although this past Thursday was fun hanging out with my friend, her 18 year old son and all his young buds at a recent fun pop-up store opening - not together, just at the same event. I'm not that big of a cougar!

I told her to invite them because they'd been disappointed over something and needed some fun. They loved being there - their first "Hollywood" event. I felt a little guilty because free booze was flowing and of course, once we left they took advantage. Oh well. Can't control everything right? See, I'm learning.

I did take a funny picture of my Desperate Housewife friend with hottie Actor Jesse Metcalf, the gardener dude from Desperate Housewives and other films.  When is Desperate Housewives coming back on? Got to fill my guilty pleasure. She's probably going to kill me for sharing this with you, but I think it's funny. He can be my gardener any time. I need some bushes trimmed, or can find some! LOLJesse & colleen - sm Isn't he a cutie? Someone give that guy a job. We need to see him on screen again. Marc, you reading this? Rides a motorcycle too girls. Watch out! Cougars on the prowl! LOL

Ah, the pleasures of summer. Isn't it a beautiful day? Have a good one!

Quick update then back to your regularly scheduled reading...

By Joy A. Kennelly

Spoke to my brother-in-law yesterday and he sounds in great spirits. It's really a miracle that he's not hurt worse than he is. I cried when I heard his voice because you never know how much you love someone until you almost lose them. He has always been a real sweet friend to me and a great husband to my sister.

Makes me tear up just writing that. Dwayno, you are loved!

I'm very grateful he doesn't have brain damage or any of the other serious injuries we were first told might have happened. He doesn't remember anything about the ambulance ride or the helicopter airlifting him to Denver from Breckenridge which is probably a good thing because he's in a lot of pain now even with drugs.

God is faithful. Turns out the guests visiting my sister up at the cabin included a former EMT who helped keep Dwayne stabilized until the ambulance came. He knew just what to do which I think helped so much.

Thank you for praying if you did/have. Please continue if you remember. We appreciate it!

What always astonishes me when bad things happen is how certain people react which makes me realize I didn't know them as well as I thought I had.

One person, who I considered a friend, when told the news about my brother-in-law's injury and possible brain damage that this is the worst thing that's happened to our family responded really cruelly like it was no big deal.

I let it go then thinking since she'd lost her job that day maybe her stress was making her speak like that.  Guess not. When I mentioned the pain in my back was really bad last night (ran out of my GoChi Juice!) as an excuse for not going out or driving anywhere far, she was even more cruel and self-centered.

My car is probably going to be totaled since the damage exceeds the value of the car. Now do you get me?

Another friend I've known for a long time handled Dwayne's crisis with such a cavalier attitude I was shocked and still haven't spoken to her it hurt so much. I guess people's true colors come out in time of need. Needless to say, I don't have time for people like that right now. Only kind, positive, caring people. Know any? I'm in the market for new friends. LOL

On a more positive note, very fun news to share. The Shore Restaurant and Lounge will be featured in the upcoming July 21 issue of the Los Angeles Business Journal in the LA Biz Seen section for the recent South Bay Professional Connection event we held there this past June.

Yours truly will be featured along with the owners and some of the guests. Check it out! As soon as it's available, I'll upload it of course.

Okay, that's all for now. Hope you're having a great day! I am now!

I'll upload Domiziano's award announcement soon. Thanks for reading.

Thanks too for praying. Means a lot.

South Bay Beach Volleyball Olympic news, funny Kathy Griffin clips and ironic MB sign...

By Joy A. Kennelly

Now, if you've been reading my blog for awhile, you know I love nothing better than a guy who plays volleyball because then they get this awesome V-shaped bod. Well, you'll be happy to hear that one of South Bay's very own hot vball bods is actually now an Olympic athlete set to compete in Beijing!

AVP player, Sean Rosenthal, is doing us all proud and ready for his Chinese close-up this August. Here's a more serious article to give you more details on him as a player. Enjoy!

Also, I've had more time to ponder little Chloe's comment and Billvie's comment too regarding my new dearest friend, Kathy Griffin. Just teasing, I've never met her, but since she does a reality show don't we all know everything about her?

Well, I did some digging and found some very funny clips of Kathy Griffin & Anderson Cooper for you to watch if you need to laugh for whatever reason. Also, if you don't know who she is, then watch and learn.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GmYWaCF5YFA&feature=related

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZdiwDezY6iM&feature=related

I was trying to figure out why I like her so much and then it hit me. We both like making fun of situations and people that others normally won't go there. For example, driving down the street today in Manhattan Beach there was a banner hanging that said something about the upcoming Jewish Family Festival featuring the Amazing African Acrobats.

Now to me, that was absolutely hilarious. To someone else who doesn't share my twisted sense of humor, they're not going to see the humor in that multi-cultural, all embracing banner posted in the middle of whitesville USA. However, me and my Jewish friend Shana - we think that's hilarious.

I know, it's the small things in life. Or another racially funny thing that happened on the 4th of July that I really can't share here because it's too true, but extremely funny. Everyone would laugh, but just in case there's another Chloe out there who doesn't get my sense of humor...

Just trying to be a good girl.

I've been thinking why have I been so bitchy lately when I'm writing? Then I realized it's because I'm in pain from this stupid car accident that wasn't my fault and I'm taking it out on everyone else as a result. Having fun at Kathy Griffin's expense made me feel better for some odd reason. Go figure.

However, I do need to clarify that I do find Kathy attractive and was totally teasing about the Dame Edna look-a-like question. She, for one, is a very attractive red head. Conan O'Brien? Not so attractive. Once again, my sick twisted sense of humor. Are you laughing yet? OY!

Tonight I had to drive to Hollywood to pick something up (grimacing all the way) and as I was stopped at Kings Road and Sunset this blinding light hit me from a nearby video billboard. I couldn't figure out what was happening and glanced up only to see Kathy Griffin's commercial for her Bravo show Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List beaming down at me.

Thinking, okay, that's a sign (literally and figuratively), right then I almost get hit by a fire truck that is barreling down Sunset, horns wailing and careening wildly up Kings Road and almost into me because the corner was too tight! Fortunately, I dodged that bullet and got the hell out of dodge asap. Whew! That was a close one.

This is why if/when I buy a different car, it is definitely not going to be another sports car. I'm done with small cars. I'm a tall woman. People see me when I walk around or enter a room, especially if I wear heels. I'm not used to not being seen which happens all the time in this car despite it being red. Annoying! And dangerous. Enough!

So, if I happen to be a little more snarky than usual, please bear with me. You would be too if your mornings often comprised of laying on hot packs in order to get your butt, back and neck functioning again. Or having a chiropractor making adjustments for an accident that wasn't your fault. I can't say that enough. NOT MY FAULT and damn if I'm not livid.

Keep praying. When you do, I don't feel the pain as much. Really, seriously. I feel better and calmer about this whole situation for some weird reason. That's why I'm asking again. Miles, if you're reading this, pray too dammit. Just teasing ya. Pray if you want to, pray if you want to. (sung to the tune of It's my party...)

That's all for now. I hope this makes sense. It's late. I'm tired, but just felt I needed to make amends to the beautiful, talented, and absolutely hilarious (potty-mouth, blasphemous) Kathy Griffin.

Oh yeah, almost forgot to tell you. So then I'm driving a little further down Sunset and there's another billboard (non-video this time) with Kathy Griffin staring down at me with mascara running down her face as she's crawling down the red carpet for her Emmy or Grammy - I'm forgetting which.

TOO FUNNY! I can't get away from this woman. Maybe I'm meant to work with her as a publicist because I can be just as snarky as her and get her sense of humor. You go girl. We all love ya babe, just enough with the religious jokes ok? At least of Christian faith. Make fun of kabbahal (however it's spelled)- Madonna's giving you enough material isn't she? Go for it!

Now I'm crossing a line. I'm tired and I'm in pain. Is that a good enough excuse? Okay, no, you're right.

No religion jokes at all ok Kathy? You really don't want God finding you not funny...

Good night everybody.

Bummer for Jason from The Bachelorette - LOVE Frank Nicotero's wrap-up

By Joy A. Kennelly

I love taking quick breaks to watch Yahoo's Frank Nicotero's PrimetimeInNoTime wrap up of the TV shows either I caught the night before, or missed and can catch up with Frank because he's such a nerdy funny guy that he's cute to me.

Watching him makes me want to pinch his cheeks, rub his developing bald spot, laugh at his corny jokes and poke his soft stomach to make him giggle like a Pillsbury Doughboy, he's that nerdy cute. Check out his blog page because in that pic, he cleans up good.

What can I say? Funny men make my heart melt.

I loved his wrap up of The Bachelorette this morning which is why I just had to share. Catch it here to see what I'm talking about if you missed the "DRAMATIC" conclusion (sarcastic humor for those who don't understand when I'm trying to make you laugh) to the race for DeAnna Marie Pappas' heart.

That's my other dirty little secret that I watch when I'm home. The Bachelorette. I know, goofy, but I love it. Makes me want to go to the Bahamas! I also watched Shayne and the English bloke Matt's love affair - did anyone else think that Shayne looks better with bangs and her beau looks better with hair? They're still cute, but...

Glad to see they're a little heavier too. Makes me feel better.:) Hear, hear for normal size people on TV!

I watch this show because I'm a sucker for romance and love watching guys act like fools for love. What can I say? I must say that Jason is such a cutie and good guy (the guy who got dumped for those of you who aren't into the show and curious), that I'm sure if he accepts the usual invitation to come back on and find love you better believe he'll have tons of women lining up for the chance to marry him.

What a wonderful guy! Where are more of those kinds of guys? Single women in Hermosa Beach want to know! I know, they're not easily found if you're staying home watching the boob toob, but they haven't been found hitting any of the local drinking establishments either. I bet Jessie would have been found hanging out here though! LOL Gotta love the snowboarders and surfers right?

Maybe at Bay Cities Community Church? No, haven't seen anyone that cute and single there in quite awhile. All the good ones who go there are taken! OY!

Oh well, there's always tonight right? Gotta get back to what I was doing, but had to share because I've been thinking this about Franky baby for quite some time. Also, glad DeAnna found love! Gives me hope.

Big romantic sigh...:)

Now to sit quietly and wait for the big televised Jessie/DeAnna wedding that's bound to happen knowing the producers of this show and their desire to milk this stuff for all it's worth.

Bigger romantic sigh...

How about a Bachelor who's into Cougars show producer guys?

Now that's TV!!!

'Aint love grand?

My client, Actor Domiziano Arcangeli, has won the Golden Halo Award for Acting!

By Joy A. Kennelly

I just have to share this wonderful news that my client, Actor Domiziano Arcangeli, has just been selected to receive the Golden Halo Award for Acting by the Southern California Motion Picture Council this August, 2008.

I just learned the news and have nothing more than that to report right now, but as soon as I have more information, you better believe I will be posting it here!

Congratulations Domiziano! You deserve it!

I'm a Christian, but I enjoy Kathy Griffin's humor (except for...)

By Joy A. Kennelly

One of my dirty little secret pleasures is watching D-Lister, Kathy Griffin and her "Emmy-Award Winning TV Show" Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List. I know, surprise, surprise. I just love out there women who push the envelope and tell stories on celebrities that their publicists would kill to squelch. It totally cracks me up!

Plus, her gay following is hilarious. Probably the main reason she's such a huge success, right? That and because she's willing to offend people so completely. The only thing that I can't get behind is her railing against Jesus. Granted, knowing her sense of humor, it's just for shock value, but still...

I can't find the email to share with you, but my mom sent me an email filled with famous people who said similar things and ended up dead. John Lennon I remember, the rest, I forget. Wish I could find it. It was shocking to see how many famous people died.

Don't mess with Jesus Red!:)

Does anyone else think she looks like a younger prettier red head Dame Edna? Doesn't she? Her mom totally reminds me of my little mom which makes me laugh when she's on screen. My mom doesn't drink at all like that, but she's the same size (kinda) and funny too.

I think CNN's Andy Cooper (Anderson Cooper to you byatch), looked like he was almost afraid of what Kathy was going to say next in their New Year's Eve episode together, but was totally loving the fear! I think he must secretly love funny bad girls. I'm over here Andy!!! LOL

I can NOT even believe she's dating one of the greatest minds of our century and billionaire, the co-inventor of Apple Computers, Steve "Woz" Wozniak. I loved how she snuck a hair cut on him on live TV. Totally funny.

Other than the swearing and Jesus bashing, I think Kathy is hilarious. What about you?

Oh, and if you're curious... I don't write about everything in my personal life. Got keep some of it private, right? So, if you want to date me, don't worry I won't write about you (unless you're a jerk because then I can mock you.:)

Just thought I'd share!:)

4th of July and day after pix...

By Joy A. Kennelly

My neck and back are pretty whacked. Thank God for hot packs, advil and GoChi Juice.

At least I had a fun 4th of July - great fireworks, great weather and fun people. Helped to get completely out of Manhattan and Hermosa Beach.

I see drunk people. Just kidding.

I actually avoided the scene completely because it just sickens me so much. I just don't get it. Never have, never will. What is the pleasure in drinking yourself till you're drunk out of your mind? Please explain, I'd love to know.

In any case, here's some fun 4th of July and day after 4th of July pix of the beach.

Enjoy...

Doesn't the little boy look like a sitting Buddha? Tourists

Fourth of July in Hermosa Beach - mass police enforcement - fines tripled

By Joy A. Kennelly

We know there are thousands of people who think nothing of coming down to Hermosa Beach to get wasted on the 4th of July who may not be aware of the intense police crackdown that is underway with fines tripled for open alcohol containers and drinking in public.

Just thought you'd like to know before driving out here to get wasted since gas is so expensive now and you may receive one of those fines. Especially if you're underage. I wouldn't doubt there will be DUI checkpoints set up too.

Apparently there will also be three floodlights on Pier Plaza and extra deputies from the Los Angeles County Sherriff's Department in addition to the tripled fines. Not a good place to be this year doncha think?

Also, video cameras are being installed near the bathrooms on Hermosa Beach Pier to prevent/catch graffiti, public urination and drug deals.

Just thought you might like to know that too.

Lastly, there is a majorly connected Hermosa Beach Neighborhood Watch group that sends out email alerts when criminals are in the neighborhood which helps the police catch criminals with the assistance of police dogs, choppers, and police pursuit.

Hermosa Beach is not messing around any more.

Just thought you'd like to know.

Oh, and Happy 4th of July. Thank you veterans!

When it rains, it pours... Prayer request again

Please pray for my brother-in-law, Dwayne, who fell off a ladder today and was flown on a stretcher to the trauma center in Denver, CO. My sister fortunately has friends visiting who can comfort and take care of her and their kids, but we're all concerned about his well-being because he's been out-of-it ever since he fell.

Thank you. My sister thanks you too.

God bless everyone. Good night.

This is just too much right now.

Non-alcoholic cocktails courtesy of Natalie Bovis-Nelsen, The Liquid Muse

A good friend of mine, Natalie Bovis-Nelsen, is a mixologist who travels all over the world creating unique cocktails which can be found on her blog, The Liquid Muse.

She recently posted this announcement about her recent TV appearance which I thought bartenders, bar owners, 4th of July party hosts and hostesses might enjoy trying out to upgrade their non-alcoholic offerings. I, for one, am tired of always having to drink juice, pop or ice tea when I don't feel like drinking!

Natalie Bovis-Nelsen recently taped a segment featuring a couple of her non-alcoholic cocktails for Better.TV which belongs to Better Homes & Gardens. This video is an informative "how-to" featuring The Yankee Doodle Candy, which she designed specifically for patriotic summer festivities.

Great for guests who have to drive home, are the designated drivers, are preggers, or simply choose not to drink alcohol...
