I love my church and the people who go there which is why I just have to share about the message this morning.
Jim, my pastor, has really been teaching a great sermon series called What Are We Here For - What we believe and What it means: Living Out What God Desires. Here's the notes for your edification:
1. That We Live Life Growing. Growing in our Faith
2 Thessalonians 1:3:
Thanksgiving and Prayer
ought always to thank God for you, brothers, and rightly so, because
your faith is growing more and more, and the love every one of you has
for each other is increasing. Ephesians 4:12:
12to prepare God's people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up
14Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of men in their deceitful scheming.
15Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into him who is the Head, that is, Christ.
2. Growing in our Love for God
10And we pray this in order that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and may please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God,
3. Growing in our Understanding of Who Christ is
2 Peter 3:18:
18But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and forever!
II That We Life Life Connecting
1. Connecting with God in Obedience
21Whoever has my commands and obeys them, he is the one who loves me. He who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love him and show myself to him."
2. Connecting to God in Prayer
6Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.
3. Connecting with Others in Love
34"A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.
III That We Live Life Serving - Giving Yourself Away
1. People that listen to God must serve.
42Jesus called them together and said, "You know that those who are regarded as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. Mark 10:43-45:
43Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, 44and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. 45For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."
1 Peter 5:2:
2Be shepherds of God's flock that is under your care, serving as overseers—not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not greedy for money, but eager to serve;
2. We are to Serve in all areas of life.
23Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men,Colossians 3:24:
24since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.
1 Peter 4:10:
10Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God's grace in its various forms.
13You, my brothers, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the sinful nature[a]; rather, serve one another in love.
3. As we choose to serve we benefit.
1 Timothy 3:13:
13Those who have served well gain an excellent standing and great assurance in their faith in Christ Jesus.
15 But if serving the LORD seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your forefathers served beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD."
God's Hope for All Humanity
1. God Wants People to Be Saved.
1 Timothy 2:4:
4who wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.
2. We Are Part of the Salvation Process.
8But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."
Salt and Light
13"You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men.
1Brothers, my heart's desire and prayer to God for the Israelites is that they may be saved.
3. Lasting Salvation is Available to Everyone
13for, "Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved."[a]
12Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved."
What this all means to us
1. We have work to do.
37Then he said to his disciples, "The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few.38Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field."
1 Corinthians 15:57-58
57But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. 58Therefore, my dear brothers, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.
2. Our Efforts really do matter.
22Be merciful to those who doubt;
1 Corinthians 10:31:
31So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.
This sermon has been brought to you courtesy of Jim Mackinga, Pastor of Bay Cities Community Church. Hope you enjoyed the read! I felt rather convicted about my attitude towards my gig after hearing it and now want to be more servant minded. We shall see!
This weekend was a lot of fun and I'll have to tell you about it some other time. Have a great week!
