"A South Bay DJ is trying to scratch unprofessional stereotypes from the industry's turntables.

'You think of a flake showing up with five buddies and getting drunk on your dollar,' said Kristopher "KC" Campbell, owner of VOX DJs in Manhattan Beach. 'It's a messy stereotype.'

The company, which provides DJ services for parties, is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year.

Unlike some DJs who may be based out of their parents' garage, VOX DJs has three full-time staff members in the office to connect with clients, answer phone calls and prepare equipment. They set appointments for in-house DJs and 10 contractors.

'We follow up,' said Campbell, who is a DJ as well as an actor.

The 31-year-old Redondo Beach resident has been DJing since he was 14, when VOX DJs founder and former owner Shawn Sedlacek discovered him hamming it up with a microphone at a Manhattan Beach Intermediate School dance.

Campbell says his business ethic differs from his performing persona as "DJ Push Play," who plays the part of a "hustler" and "ham" in front of an audience.

Campbell initially set out to be an actor - not a businessman - until he realized that he was mostly getting callbacks for DJing.

'As an actor, I'm auditioning and never hearing back in months and years,' Campbell said. 'DJing made sense. I get five calls after one gig.'

Campbell worked on and off for VOX DJs since middle school, earning him the nickname the "human jukebox." From 2000 to 2007, he helped expand the company from three DJs doing 150 events a year, to about a dozen DJs working more than 400 parties and other celebrations annually.

That pleased the company's original owner.

'It's like my baby growing up,' said Sedlacek about the company.

Sedlacek started VOX DJs in 1984 when he was 12 years old. He sold it to Campbell in 2008 to pursue another company, VOX Entertainment, a national event service that caters to large-scale corporate businesses.

'(Campbell) is taking it to a new level,' Sedlacek said. 'It's something I didn't have the time or the focus to do. He's bringing great DJs to the South Bay and beyond.'"
