Attended Search Engine Strategies (SES) Conference in SJC this week

My good techy friend Erica told me about the SES Conference in SJC taking place this week which sounded good. I spontaneously decided to take her up on an invitation to join last minute due to my love of social media and SEO. 

Found an inexpensive hotel through www.hotels.com (recommend The Arena Hotel for budget minded travelers to SJC because of the two-person jaccuzi tub in the room and free dinner and breakfast served daily), then pitched myself to four-star hotels as a travel blogger which resulted in one wonderful night's stay at the amazing Hotel De Anza (recommend this location for those who love art deco, cozy, intimate boutique hotels which are extremely private and well-appointed. Paul McCartney has enjoyed the Hotel's Penthouse Suite twice.)

I drove up Monday and returned yesterday late. Since I've been blogging all afternoon on my other blog and my arms need a break, I shall pick this up tomorrow with all the details and pix! I promise!

The Actor's Fund & Table Manners & Table Etiquette DVD by Paul Dreher

I was introduced to the benefits of The Actor's Fund earlier this summer and have enjoyed taking advantage of all the free career support offered with the professional staff, Joanne Webb and Michael Salerno.

What people may not always realize is that this organization is open to anyone in the entertainment field, not just actors, and has been around for 100 years.

I have enjoyed taking their career classes which include resume writing, advanced job search, interview techniques, and even an on-camera taped interview critique. It's by far the most sophisticated career resource/services I've had the privilege to experience.

And it's all free! I highly recommend those seeking entertainment or transition jobs to take advantage of this free service! All you need to do is attend an orientation on Monday afternoons at 5757 Wilshire in Los Angeles on the 4th floor from 1pm - 2:30pm and you're in.

Well worth the investment of time. Trust me.

I recently attended an Actor's Fund seminar yesterday with Tom Henschel who is an internationally recognized expert in the field of workplace communications and self-presentation.  As President of Essential Communications, a Los Angeles-based executive development firm, he has helped hundreds of senior leaders achieve The Look & Sound of Leadership™. 

This particular seminar was about presentation skills for somoene looking for work and very informative. I especially enjoyed the way Tom was able to engage the audience while keeping focused on teaching. Some speakers don't have that ability and his professionalism shone through. Plus, the information was very helpful.

I'd learned a lot of what he was discussing by virtue of the professional referral organization I was involved with in the recent past which trains you how to present yourself in 60 second and 30 second sound bites. However, I liked his explanation of how to explain the deeper levels of expertise you offer should you engage someone in a conversation beyond the simple, "What do you do?"

To gain that bit of knowledge was worth attending the seminar for that alone since I always discuss copy writing, online marketing and event planning as my three tier skill offerings. Now I understand how best to explain myself to those who ask on a deeper level and also how to redefine my current "elevator speech."

That's why I like attending seminars. Even when I think I might know what someone is going to talk about I always learn something new when attending with an open mind. Which is what I always do.:)

On another note, I'm moving forward with my networking event again and hope you'll save August 25th on your calendars. More details coming forthwith. I promise.

Speaking of learning, I finally had the time and focus to watch my new friend, Paul Dreher of the Beverly Hilton's instructional and self improvement DVD on Table Manners and Table Etiquette. (Abbreviated TMATE.)

For those unfamiliar with this beautiful hotel or the qualifications of Paul Dreher, Paul hosts the Golden Globes and numerous other high-end entertainment events in Beverly Hills as the Assistant Director of Catering, Beverly Hilton, for the past 20 plus years.

We met when he was awarded the BIZ Bash Hall of Fame award. When I met him later on-site for lunch, I was astounded at the amount of awards he has collected over the years. What a stunning hotel too! And what a gracious, humble, accomplished man.

Back to his Table Manners and Table Etiquette DVD. Here's publicity from the back cover: "Paul has taught TMATE classes for over five years for groups such as College Bound, YWCA, Job Corp, and Dean and Shannon Factor of Smashbox Cosmetics. Through his private test meals, he has taught 1000's of people his TMATE class including Firemen, Police Officesrs, and Socialites."

Watching it reminded me that I had taken a Business Etiquette class back in college and all the lessons came flashing back. Now do you see why I'm so polite? Just teasing, but seriously... I do know manners which is why sometimes other's lack is so appalling!

Paul has a very easy-to-understand style of teaching and the DVD was very well done. I highly recommend this to anyone who doesn't know which fork or knife to use in professional and/or formal dining situations. Also, simply to improve your basic manners in general if your parents weren't available to teach you proper etiquette, or you want to bone up your current skills.

Paul told me a lot of college students receive this DVD as presents for when they go away to college because it will help them professionally when they're dining with executives and others. It's a great gift!:)
